Privacy is one, or if not, the most important thing we should value. It holds
us - our whole being. It consists our whole self. If we do not value our privacy or
security well, then it would lead to unfortunate situations. It could lead us to danger. It
could harm ourselves, our family or anyone around us. Worse, it might make us
encounter the villain stated in the TED Talk.
The speaker, Denelle Dixon, stated that “The line between our online lives
and offline lives is blurring. Our privacy, our control on who we are and how we want
others to see us, is disappearing.” This line made a big impact on me. I do agree that
the line is indeed disappearing. In our generation today, where the world is circling
around social media, we could easily know all the things about one person. Even if
the person only leaves a breadcrumbs, just like the example stated in the video, it
could lead to massive privacy disperse. How other see us through our online lives can
be easily connected on what they can do in our offline lives.
There is one thing that is even scarier than the virus you can get online. It is
the trolls. The anonymity that spreads harassment online which affects one person’s
offline life. They are the true villain. In the video, it shows how one information could
danger the entire life of one person. Dixon proclaimed “No matter how in control that
you think you are of your privacy, you are not.” This leads to a conclusion that
internet is truly a scary place.
Innovation should help us and not put us on danger. This innovation of social
media should assure us that our privacy is protected and valued. One insight in the
video is we should demand to companies to build products like the control center. I
totally agree and I believe this would help us to use social media without the fear of
being in danger. We must use our voice to raise an awareness and prevent unfortunate
events to happen just because of our personal information. We should indeed vote
with our loyalty and show them our value. The world is too big and somehow scary to
live in. Therefore, we should make ways to make it a better place where fear could not
be seen in anyone’s eyes. Thus, protecting privacy is important and should be valued.
