• Construction Specifications Institute (CSI)

Established in 1948, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is a national

association of more than 7,000 members initiated by the government specification
writers seeking to standardize construction specifications in response to the building
boom that occurred after the Second World War. They are committed to improving
the communication of construction information throughout continuous development
and transformation of standards and formats, education and certification of
professionals to improve project delivery processes. The institute provides a forum
for exchange of information among architect, engineers and others in the
construction industry with a particular objective of improving the quality, clarity, and
technical validity of construction specifications.
In 1963, CSI created a construction language standard for building specification,
with 16 major divisions of work. Also referred to as the "Dewey Decimal System" of
building construction, MasterFormat® is a product of the Construction Specifications
Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC). It is the
specifications-writing standard for most commercial building design and construction
projects. It provides a master format for project designers to follow when they create
their projects. For more than 40 years, MasterFormat™ has been the recognized
industry standard used to organize specifications. CSI members continuously work
to effectively communicate the designers' vision, the material producers' solutions
and the constructor’s techniques that will create outstanding facilities and structures.

• CSI MasterFormat® Divisions

CSI MasterFormat® is organized in a standardized outline format within its 16

Divisions from its first edition (1975). The current MasterFormat® is now comprised
of 50 Divisions (2020 Edition). Each division consists of a series of subdivisions that
add greater detail to the main division. A typical subdivision will break out into three
or four sections - general, products, execution, and sometimes, sequences. The
divisions are as follows:

o Division 1 — General Requirements: includes description of construction

delivered under a single contract
o Division 2 — Sitework: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation,
replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of existing conditions
o Division 3 — Concrete: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation,
replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of concrete
o Division 4 — Masonry: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation,
replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of masonry
o Division 5 — Metals: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, replacement,
restoration, preservation, etc. of metals
o Division 6 — Wood and Plastics: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation,
replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of wood, plastics, and composites
o Division 7 — Thermal and Moisture Protection: includes maintenance, repair,
rehabilitation, replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of thermal and
moisture protection
o Division 8 — Doors and Windows: includes maintenance, repair,
rehabilitation, replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of openings
o Division 9 — Finishes: includes maintenance, repair, rehabilitation,
replacement, restoration, preservation, etc. of finishes

• Relevance of CSI MasterFormat® to Architecture and Building Materials

MasterFormat® is a list of titles and section numbers for organizing data about
construction requirements and building materials - its maintenance, repair,
rehabilitation, replacement, restoration, and preservation. Its utilization and
application assist the user in organizing information into distinct groups when
creating contract documents. By standardizing such information, MasterFormat®
facilitates communication among architects, specifiers, contractors and suppliers,
which helps them meet building owners’ requirements, timelines and budgets.
This coding system works as a middleman that connects the manufacturing and
construction industry for faster and more error-free material production, easier
engineering, and quicker building times for construction companies. Architects,
builders and contractors use it to draw up plans, and facilities managers use it to
operate buildings. Using MasterFormat® improves communication between project
groups, most notably between the design and construction teams. This indexing
system for construction and architectural specifications is designed to respond to
industry changes, improvements and new technologies. It undergoes revisions and
improvements, but architectural divisions remain relatively unchanged.

• Conclusion

Accessibility for detailed information in construction specifications provided by

the MasterFormat® is substantial in every discipline involved in the design,
construction and operation of facilities and other institutional buildings. Allied
professionals involved in the creation and management of the built environment are
guaranteed with synchronicity, such as the manufacturers and builders. The CSI, as
an organization, strives for cooperative solutions that foster innovation and creative
thinking that also contributes to education. Additionally, regular revisions and
publication of different editions reflect the changing industry practices and advances
in technology. With MasterFormat®, people can create quality and sustainable
design, reduce construction cost and time, enhance safety and efficiency, and more
importantly, organize data to improve comprehension and make knowledge-based
decisions.
