TEXT 1: Read the text and choose the best answer. (6 pkt.)

Choosing a musical instrument

Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are discouraged by one big problem:
what to play? Here are a few questions to help you decide.

What kind of music do you like?

Many instruments are versatile, but some are more suited to certain types of music. Although there is some classical
repertoire for the saxophone, for example, people associate it more with jazz, and it is not a permanent feature of
many orchestras. Some instruments may lend themselves better than others to the music you like, so consider this
before you start.

Do you want to play with other people?

Think about your long-term future as a musician. If you want to play with other people, what sort of instrument
would be most practical? The initial attraction of playing an amazing solo instrument like trumpet, violin, flute or
lead guitar might fade when you realise how many other people are competing with you to get the main part with
the same instrument! If you want to play rock music, there will always be a demand for bass players or drummers,
and if you fancy being part of an orchestra, the bassoon is a clever choice to make sure you are always needed.

Where are you going to practise?

Many people live in flats and practising the drums, for example, will drive your neighbours crazy. Think about where
and when you are going to practise, as well as the patience of the people you live with or near. Electric versions of
instruments like the piano, drums, guitar and even violin give you the option of playing into the night using
headphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. Alternatively, you may need to consider going to a school or a
community centre to practise.

How much money can you spend?

This is quite a big factor. A lot of instruments can be purchased in different price ranges, for example, guitars. But
this doesn’t change the fact that many, such as the piano, are always pretty expensive. If you can’t afford your
chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else’s or hire one?

Still not sure?

Talk to people you know who already play instruments. They might even let you try theirs. It’s also a good idea to
find
an experienced music teacher, preferably one who plays a few different instruments, who can give you some advice
and push you in the right direction.

If you find an instrument you love and that suits your needs, you’ll find the time spent choosing was well worth it.
Good luck with making your choice!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN NORWICH

Be a wanderer for the day
Be a wanderer for the day and take a gentle stroll around Norwich, with over 1500 historic buildings within the
city walls. The city has 33 medieval churches, more than any other city in northern Europe, and Elm Hill is a complete
historical cobbled street with stunning examples of Tudor buildings and wealthy merchants’ houses.
Pictured here at the Norwich Lanes, pedestrian streets where you can find many local independent stores.
Nearby is London Street, the first 'foot street' in the country when it opened in 1967. Yes, Norwich was the first city
in the UK to ban traffic from a main shopping street.
And don’t miss our Norman cathedral, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe,
boasting the second tallest spire in the country and the largest cloisters in England. It's Refectory restaurant is a
good place for taking a break when you get tired of sightseeing.

Shopping, including Jarrolds

Take a look around the family-run Jarrold, Norwich’s wonderful independent department store, the Harrods of
the East, with an award-winning book department that has over 40,000 titles. (It was Jarrold who published 30
million bestseller Black Beauty by Anna Sewell).
Alongside all the big High Street names and the largest city centre Marks & Spencer outside London, over 40 per
cent
of Norwich’s shops are independent, which means shoppers get the best of both worlds. Norwich is recognised as
one of the top 10 places to shop in the UK.

Tour the Norman Norwich Castle

Take a tour of the Norman Norwich Castle, and find out what a Snapdragon is. With over 1 million exhibits, the
Castle is the British version of The Smithsonian (the world's largest museum and research complex), an eclectic mix
of fine art, archaeology (look out for the mummified cat), natural history (including tigers and a giant polar bear) and
much more (death masks of convicted killers anyone?). The ‘British Masters’ gallery showcases the work of the two
leading figures of the Norwich School, John Crome and John Sell Cotman, displaying their greatest masterpieces side
by side. You can also visit the dungeons and go up onto the battlements for SUPERB views of the city!
