News Story 1

Due to four students getting arrested for public intoxication, and two others getting

charged with DUI's, the principal of Leaguetown High school has decided to require

Breathalyzer tests in exchange for entry to this year's prom.

Police officers will be attending to administer the tests, and a drug dog will be present as

well. In the event that a student tests

positive, they will be denied entry to the

school's prom.

"We do not want a repeat of last year's

prom," principal Rudy Jimenez said. "It is

my job to keep the students as safe as

possible, and this breath test will do just

that."

Jimenez said that when the school's police

chief suggested this idea, he knew that this was their answer. Although he feels apologetic that

the students have to go through this, Jimenez believes that this is in their best interests.

"This is a preventive measure," school police chief Eric Mclennan said. "It's just another

step we're taking to keep students safe."

The students' opinion on this matter is divided. Some students claim that having to take

a breathalyzer test is violating their rights, so much so that another prom was organized. Senior

Sonny Tarwater, an organizer of the alternative prom, argues that being required to take the

Breathalyzer tests is treating them as if they were criminals.

"I don't care if the cops arrest someone who is visibly drunk and making a scene, but

arresting students because they had one sip of beer on prom night is pretty stupid," Tarwater

said.
However, there are students who don’t agree with Tarwater. Senior Eve Tooley believes

that Tarwater is blowing this situation out of proportion.

“My boyfriend wants to go to

Sonny's prom, but I don't. I want the

real thing,” Tooley said. “This is my

senior year. I want the dress, the

photos, the limo, the whole thing. So

we have to blow into a little tube?

What's the big deal?”

Junior class president Heidi

Swift says that she isn’t too thrilled

about having to require the Breatalyzers, but claims that it is the right thing to do. Swift then

mentions that at prom two years ago a girl got too drunk and ended up falling into the food table.

“A few drunk kids can ruin everything at prom,” Swift said. “I think students feel like they

have to drink before going to prom. There is a lot of pressure. now that pressure is gone.”
