THE hydraulic steering SYSTEM

The term “full hydraulic” steering refers to steering system configurations with no mechanical linkage between
the steering control unit and the actuators. The typical hydrostatic steering circuit comprised of a reservoir (tank),
hydraulic pump (source), steering unit (control valve), and actuator(s) (cylinders). The steering control unit directs
the flow through a cycloid (rotary) directional control valve utilizing a gerotor set to regulate or maintain the flow
within the circuit. Depending on the complexity of the steering circuit design, other integrated, external, or auxiliary
components can be incorporated.

Hydraulic steering is in a variety of industries from agriculture, construction, earth moving, forestry, material handling,
marine, and mining. With the assistance of hydraulics, these systems can provide tremendous steering power with
very little effort. The systems are reliable, flexible and easy to operate. White Drive Products offers many of the
major components needed in a hydrostatic steering system. Among these are the steering unit (SU), priority valve
(PV), manifold blocks, steering columns and steering wheels.

PUMP CYLINDER

BASIC HYDRAULIC STEERING CIRCUIT

The PV Series priority valve distributes fluid from the pump source to in the hydraulic system to the other compo-
nents in the circuit that controls the movement of the vehicle. The priority valve’s function is to allow hydraulic flow
to certain components within a hydraulic system when the pressure is greater than or equal to a specified level.
The priority valve gives priority to certain components over less critical components. For example, in a 3000 psi,
hydrostatic steering system, a 2000-psi priority valve may be installed such that components downstream of the
priority valve are only supplied hydraulic pressure when the pressure in the system is above 2000 psi. Below 2000
psi, the priority valve will be closed.

When both the SU and PV are used together they provide a tracking type system that controls fluid flow in both the
supply and return lines through the hydraulic steering circuit at all times during operation of the vehicle.

Load Sensing - Load sensing steering units can provide a load pressure signal to a priority valve which, in turn,
will control the oil flow distribution accordingly, resulting in greater efficiency. Load sensing steering units can be
further divided into static and dynamic based on signal type.

FEATURES:

• Continuous pressure compensation to steering load.

• The steering and auxiliary circuit do not interfere with each other. Make sure steering flow is priority when
steering and auxiliary circuit work at same time. A small amount of flow passes through SU when the
deflection valve is in the neutral position which cuts down energy loss.

• Steering is reliable as flow is priority.

• Neutral pressure characteristics are not affected by displacement.

NOTES:

Pump - Use either a fixed displacement, pressure compensated, or a pressure and flow compensated pump.
When using fixed displacement pump the EF circuit must use an open center system. When using a pressure
compensated or pressure and flow compensated pump the EF circuit must use a load sensing or closed
center system.

Load Sensing Steering Unit - Uses either a static or dynamic signal. Different applications require different
signal types. The application must be fully understood when determining the use of either a static or dynamic
signal.

Priority Valve - Must meet the pumps maximum flow requirement. Choose the proper control pressure to
ensure the load sensing steering unit promptly receives the priority flow. Static priority valves should match
static load sensing steering units. Dynamic priority valves should match dynamic load sensing steering units.

System Relief Valve - If a system relief valve is utilized, the system relief valve pressure setting needs to
exceed the relief valve pressure in the steering system.

Flow Amplification - Design based on the load sensing steering unit which incorporates a device to achieve higher
flows. During normal operation, when the speed is less than 10 rpm, the displacement determines the amount
of oil needed to make one revolution. When the speed is between 10 and 40 rpm, the flow amplifier gradually
increases the displacement. When speeds exceed 40 rpm, the displacement is at it’s amplified displacement.

Hydrostatic Steering Unit

steering unit integral valves

manual steering check valve
Under normal operation when the steering pump supplies an adequate oil flow at the required pressure, the maxi-
mum torque on the steering wheel will not exceed 4 Nm. If the steering system pump fails or the oil flow rate is
insufficient, the steering unit will function as a manual steering pump. Manual steering can only be used for limited
control of the vehicle if a sudden drop of pump pressure or flow occurs.
relief valve
Pressure relief valves set the maximum steering system pressure and prevent pressure spikes within the system,
thus protecting the power pump from damage.

shock valve
Shock valves protect the steering unit by limiting the pressure difference from lines L and R returning to tank when
external forces cause the cylinder to see higher pressure than is provided by the pump. The shock valves are
direct acting, respond quickly and set at 2 lpm [0.5 gpm].

suction valve
The suction valve allows oil to be pulled from the tank to stop cavitation in the steering cylinder. To ensure proper
function and correct suction a back pressure valve needs to be fitted in the tank line.

overview
The PV Series priority valve distributes fluid from the series descriptions
pump source to in the hydraulic system to the other PV11 - Manifold Priority Valve PV21 - Manifold Priority Valve
components in the circuit which controls the movement Dynamic Signal Static Signal

of the vehicle. The priority valve’s function is to allow

hydraulic flow to certain components within a hydraulic
system when the pressure is greater than or equal to a
specified level.

The priority valve gives priority to certain components

over less critical components. For example, in a 3000
psi, hydrostatic steering system, a 2000 psi priority valve
may be installed such that components downstream of the
priority valve are only supplied hydraulic pressure when
the pressure in the system is above 2000 psi. Below 2000
psi, the priority valve will be closed.

When both the SU and PV are used together they provide

a tracking type system that controls fluid flow in both the
supply and return lines through the hydraulic steering
circuit at all times during operation of the vehicle.

pressure drop
Charts represent the characteristic pressure drop for manifold priority valves. Production units were tested with
the Ls signal in the neutral position with an oil viscosity of 20 cSt [100 SUS].

The minimum curves are applicable when the pressure on the EF connection is higher than the actual control
spring pressure. The curves for control spring pressures of 4, 7 and 10 bar apply when the pressure on the EF
connection is zero.

Priority valve signal types

LOAD SENSING (STATIC) CF EF

When using static priority valves, they must be used

with LS static steering units. There is no oil flow pres-
ent in the LS connection when the steering unit is in
neutral.
Ls

Typically used in applications where response time

and stability of the circuit is not critical. The maximum
plumbing length that connects the steering unit and
priority valve must not exceed 2 meters.
P

PRIORITY VALVE STATIC SIGNAL

LOAD SENSING (DYNAMIC)
When using dynamic priority valves, they must be used
with LS dynamic steering units. There is always oil flow CF EF
present in the LS connection when the steering unit is
in neutral from the priority valve to the steering unit.

The primary characteristic of a dynamic signal system

is the improved response time of the priority valve. This Ls
means an “always ready” steering state with no hesita-
tion when demanded.

Typically used in applications where faster steering

response is required, low operating temperatures are P
present, and when system plumbing needs to be flex-
ible. Dynamic signal priority valves are not limited to PRIORITY VALVE DYNAMIC SIGNAL
line length usually characterized by static signal priority
valves.

Another advantage of this type is the approximate 0.5

lpm [0.13 gpm] draining from the priority valve to the
steering unit. This residual oil flow keeps the steering
unit heated and can prevent thermal shock to the steer-
ing unit after long periods of inactivity in low tempera-
ture conditions.

will depend on all component efficiencies.

F = Kt ÷ Rm

Kt = Kingpin torque (daNm or lb-in) Figured in Step 1

Rm = Radius min (m or ft) Minimum radius arm

To determine the cylinder force the cylinder effective

piston area must be determined.

Cylinder piston area:

A = Area of effective cylinder piston

A = (╥ D2) ÷ 4 = D2 x .7854

Cylinder piston rod area:

A = (╥ D2) ÷ 4 - (╥ d2) ÷ 4 = (D2 - d2) x .7854

F = Pressure x Area

F = Force (daNm or lb-in)

Pump flow requirements

Steering wheel speed must be determined. A typical
steering application has 120 revolutions per minute

recommended. Other conditions may require the use
of external components such as flow dividers, priority
valves, and relief valves. Contact your sales represen-
