changes need to be swiftly introduced in each and every node
of the network. Equally, the operational data of each and every
switch must be rapidly made available to network operations
specialists in centralized locations. As well, the security and
reliability of data manipulation is of vital importance. And,
all of these requirements must be met within ever shrinking
operating expenditure (OPEX) envelopes.
Typically, the manipulation of switch data is performed
manually at the exchange site — a costly and time-consuming
exercise. Now, with the Alcatel 1000 S12 Remote Assistant for
Package Transfer and On-Line Replacement (known as the
RAPTOR application), operators can perform these changes
automatically from remote centralized locations via highly
reliable and secure high speed data links. This saves valuable
time and operating expenses.
The Alcatel Solution
A multipurpose product, the RAPTOR application allows
for uploading, from a centralized location, of any software
update to Alcatel 1000 S12 switches via a secure data link.
This includes the remotely controlled replacement of entire
software package releases. Further, any operational data
from the switches can be directly transferred via the data
links to a centralized location(s).
The RAPTOR application can be delivered with new switches
or it can be easily introduced in your installed base of Alcatel
1000 S12 switches. Suitable for small and large networks the
RAPTOR application can be seamlessly integrated with other
Alcatel network management solutions.
The RAPTOR application configuration consists of a RAPTOR
application host at each of the exchange premises and a
RAPTOR application client in a central location. At the
exchange side of the data link, the hardware equipment of the
RAPTOR application host replaces the conventional Alcatel
1000 S12 optical discs in a fully transparent way for the switch
software. The traditional physical optical discs are no longer
needed. Instead, the optical discs are emulated by the
RAPTOR application hardware and software. The RAPTOR
application host equipment acts as a virtual optical disc,
behaving in exactly the same way as the emulated optical disc.
The RAPTOR application client PC controls each RAPTOR
application host remotely from a central location via a
communications network (e.g., TCP/IP, ISDN or even an
analog line). The RAPTOR application provides you with
remote handling of the virtual optical discs and volumes.
It handles the management and interchange of virtual
optical disc files. Furthermore, it automates the handling
of the virtual optical discs including the generation of
system back-ups, loading of software updates and the
distribution of announcement files.
