Introduction

McGraw Hill is one of the most important learning math company and educational
publishers which provides customized educational content, software and services for pre-K
through postgraduate education located in New York city. It is company that operates in 28
countries.

In this assignment, I would like to make a view of how the pandemic had an impact on
the educational sector of the McGraw Hill company.

Covid-19 has found us unprepared, in all the sectors: medical, educational, business,
political or let’s say in other words, we were just not ready to deal with such a global virus.
Seriously, I saw a lot fear, and fear is the only feeling that can makes us weak, therefore I would
like to analyze the business problems that made McGraw Hill weak, and what should be the
solutions that could let the company grow again.

Based on the SWOT analysis, I will try to let you know how managed McGraw Hill
worked against the pandemic and what solutions got in the educational sector.

This analysis will show you all the reasons why McGraw Hill is such a big company, and
how all the past controversies helped them to manage the Covid-19 pandemic, a word wide
problem.

In the conclusion, you will find that even a big company can have business problems, but
also great solutions.

McGraw Hill Business Problem

-finding solutions-
The McGraw Hill company has the slogan “Your lifelong learning partner-Connect-
Learn-Succeed” and their target market are the students and writers of all age groups.

Even such a great company can have weaknesses or threats, but the strengths and
opportunities are on top. Based on the SWOT analysis, you can learn that the strengths highlights
the great background in printing and publications since 1888, top education company which is
focusing in digital learning and education services worldwide, the strong financial position and
leading informational provider and an excellent distribution of books and top brand recall among
global brands. Moving forward to the weaknesses, you can learn that the core concentration is
mainly on educational sector, over dependence on US market and high prices which is an
obvious hurdle for developing countries. About the opportunities, you should know that these
are: commercial and business printing, expanding more operations in Europe and Asia and
providing subsidies for developing countries like Pearson. Last, but the least, the threads of
McGraw Hill are as mentioned: increase in online data, e-books and other supplement
information, competition from other global players and improved publications of local players
such as Uni-tech publications.

Due to the global pandemic, the educational sector of McGraw Hill has suffered, as in all
the countries that the company is operating have been a lot of Covid-19 cases and this has
changed everything. The lockdown and after it has minimized the opportunities of the company,
because the expanding has not taken place this year. The McGraw Hill wanted to expand more in
Europe and Asia, but due to the global pandemic, this was postponed.

Because the company is mainly depending of the US market, known as a weakness, could
easily get it to a little financial crisis. Since the USA got into a financial problem, why the
company not suffer?

The educational sector had a lot of changes, sending everything that was depending on in
online. All the courses were made just online, therefore all the educators had to managed their

5
work from home. The McGraw Hill has provided them all the support, such as materials or tech
things, in order to continue their work without any problems. This has also impacted their
financial sector, because they had to spend money that were not planned for this cause.

What was the impact, you may wonder? Well, McGraw Hill has made the transition to an
online format very easy. They made the McGraw Hill Connect, a platform in three steps, the
educators set up their courses, then the students log in successfully and the last step is tracking
student progress and give feedback. Every part of this platform has instructions and a lot of
support, like if you rather talk it through, you have even a number to where you can reach out for
help.

Even if McGraw Hill had an increased online data, this platform helped the students to
keep in touch, so they would not loose contact between them or the educators. Many colleges
were closing campuses and shifting classes online.

This global pandemic, let the McGraw Hill authors to write about their ideas regarding
this topic, therefore on their site, you can find out from more than 100 articles about it. Like the
company says Because learning changes everything, learning about the global pandemic, really
changed everything. The team of authors and experts that were behind AcessMedicine reference
source, has developed a COVID Central resource site, which will be a source or weekly updated
developments and analysis in clinical medicine and public health. The site was available not for
internally, but to everyone who wants to be in touch.

At the beginning looked like a real big problem, to study from home, because the
company had to synchronize both the educators and students, therefore they had to have
patience, to increase more the online data and not have lot of expectations, which would lead
maybe to disappointments.

6
Conclusion

As the Coronavirus pandemic impacted the educational sector all around the world, a
countless number of educators and students supported by the McGraw Hill have been also
affected.

The company managed the crisis by creating intuitive, engaging, efficient, and effective
learning experiences. Since learning was the key, the company tried to focus on how to sustain
what they developed, on top. The company has always created a brighter future for their students
worldwide by applying their deep understanding of how learning happens and how the mind
develops. This time, they keep it up and were committed to ensuring that educators and parents
or students have the tools and resources they need during this uncertain time.

Even if at the beginning of the global pandemic, everyone was wonder what it will
happen, the company has easily found time and resources to create a business plan, in order to
not loose the most important sector, the educational one. They got all things done, so that
educators and students will not suffer.

McGraw Hill said that the future is still very uncertain and they will continue to provide
people from their educational sector resources they need to continue to support their teaching and
learning as their needs evolve.
