INTRODUCTION (RATIONALE)

Everything is subjected to change, even if it is small or huge. These changes have it’s

complementary effects ,either good or bad. Technology is a concrete example of things
that are undergoing huge change.

In connection to the advancement of technology there is what we called “Gadgets” .

Gadget is a small mechanical or electronic device with a practical use but often thought
of as a novelty.

Gadget plays a vital role in our world today. It is always advancing and improving
throughout the years. It is very useful it makes everyone's work easier. Gadgets have
made a huge impact to everyone especially on one's lifestyle and to a Student's Study
Habits we have grown so used to it that it becomes very difficult for us to do
assignments or to focus in studying in the absence of it.

Gadgets are now used Globally that even a toddler knows how to use it their are a lot
of things that you can do in just one click that it caughts the attention of today's
learner .

The Introduction of Gadgets in the Philippines year 2008 waybackwards their are
already Android phones during the year 1999 mobile phones are existing but it's usage
is only limited in texting and calling. On a study represented by a Filipino Researcher in
the year 2012 it shows that the people who owns an Android Phone the majority of
their purpose is to Discover New things.

Introduction of Gadgets in Schools and to Students has changed the entire

scenario of teaching and learning, with the help of Gadgets Student grow their learning
skills. Almost every students use their gadgets for their academic works and we all
know that gadgets are very reliable for every students because it can help them in
doing their school works . In today’s modern generation, students are now relying on
their gadgets but sometimes they tend to abuse it .

Through with this, the Junior High School Department in Jugan National High
School decided to conduct a research on the Gadgets Usage and It's Effect to Students
Academic Performance of Grade 10 Students in Jugan National High School due to
Advancing and Improving technical inventions, will it affect the student positively or
negatively towards their academic performance?

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM :

This Study aims to know the Gadgets Usage and It's Effects to Student Academic
Performance of Grade 10 Students in Jugan National High School S. Y. 2019-2020.

This following questions will help :

1. What is the Gadgets Usage?

2. In what way does Gagets affect the Academic Performance of a Student?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY :

Parents – this will serve as their reminder that they shall be primarily responsible in
providing limitations in their child especially in their education and proper use of
gadgets.

Students – this will help them realize that they shall uphold a good time management in
terms of their education and be responsible in using gadgets. This study will also set
information that can be used by them in order to have a proper supervision of their
gadgets while conquering their goals.

Teachers - this study will facilitate the educators in executing and giving advices to the
student in regards with the appropriate utilization of gadgets in seeking the knowledge
that they need.

Future Researchers –this will encourage future researchers to conduct studies about the
technology advancement especially gadgets that hinder the study habits that affects the
academic performance of a student.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

GLOBAL LITERATURE

Technology and Gadgets are now necessary in our daily lives it helps advance the
human race forward and makes mundane things more efficient and repeatable.

Dr. Veronika Konok and her collaborators cite evidence that supports the idea "
Healthy, well functioning adults also report significant emotional attachment to special
objects". Adults or even teens that temporarily misplaced their cellphones feel anxious
about it because it's always in their bag, hand or pocket.According to the result of the
survey that was conducted by Dr. Veronika Konok and team, it shows that most
people panicked when they misplaced their smartphones. Due to excessive Gadgets
Usage they feel emotionally attached to these electronic gadgets giving them a hard
time in controlling themselves from using it like it's part of their life and can't live
without it.

In 2015, the Center for Economic Performance in the United Kingdom conducted a
study on the impact of the cellphone ban in schools in four cities.

After comparing the grades of students in several schools in London, Birmingham,

Leicester and Manchester pre- and post-ban, Louis Philippe Beland and Richard Murphy
in their paper titled Communication: Technology, Distraction and Student Performance,
concluded that banning cellphones benefit all students, but the biggest gainers are
those who perform poorly in class.

“The results suggest that low-achieving students are more likely to be distracted by the
presence of mobile phones, while high achievers can focus in the classroom regardless
of the mobile phone policy. This also implies that any negative externalities from phone
use do not impact on the high achieving students,” they said.

The same study found that the use of mobile phones is “uncontrollable” among
students, thus resulting in poor academic performance. Even those who do not own
phones are also distracted in class.

NATIONAL LITERATURE

In the Philippines,Former President Benigno Aquino announced during the launch of the
country’s K-12 curriculum that the government eyes the use of tablet computers in
public schools in lieu of traditional textbooks (Enterprise Innovation,2012) Furthermore,
there exist various programs by then the Philippines that aim to provide one laptop
computer per child. With the presence of laptops government, non-government
organizations and private corporations in the classrooms, students become more
engaged and involved in school-related activities (Oquias,2011).

The DepEd office in the Cordillera Administrative Region took an active stance on the
issue when it issued a memorandum banning cellphones and wearable technology. It
also urged teachers and parents to find ways to educate students on the “responsible
use of cellphones.”

In her memorandum, Regional Director May Eclar said text messaging, gaming,
watching videos and chatting through social media applications were distracting
students and could sometimes stir disturbance in class.

“[The] use of cellphones within the school premises has various negative effects not
only to the students, but [to the] teachers as well. Using cellular phones inside the
classroom does not only affect the academic performance of the students, but also their
behavior inside and outside the classroom,” she said.

LOCAL LITERARTURE

The move to ban the use of cellular phones inside the classrooms has gained support
from the local legislators in the Cebu Provincial Government.

Provincial Board Members Victor Maambong and Juan Bolo, in a proposed resolution,
said the ban of on the use of cell phones by students during class hours is “worth of
support and commendation” in order to keep the students focused in the lessons and
activities in school.

In the Consolacion,Cebu The Jugan National High School in accordance to the law
“DepEd Order Numbers 83, series of 2003; 26 series of 2000 and 70 series of
1999”which states that DepEd strictly imposes a ban on the use of cell phones by
students during class hours. The said law are already implemented by all schools.

CONCLUSION

After the survey conducted, Therefore, we, the Researchers concluded that 14- 17 yrs.
old Grade 10- Students of Jugan National High School use Gadgets who majority
answers that they lack focus in Studying because of Social Media but they did not tend
to get failing grades because of it. They still manage to perform well in school and get
passing grades, some of them excels in Academics. Gadgets aren't distraction or
hindrance to have good grades it's just a matter of discipline and time management.
