FLOOR PREPARATION
The successful installation of any flooring system is dependent upon the correct
preparation method. Our experienced staff have the expertise to advise on which method is
suitable for the individual circumstance. This may include:-

 Autoblasting

Enclosed shot blasting is quick and dust free when done in conjunction with vacuum
extraction. It removes contamination, laitance, paint, failed coatings and leaves a keyed
surface for the application of the new floor system. It works by the propulsion of steel
abrasives at high velocity which rebound from the surface and are re-cycled. The depth of
profile can be varied by the speed of propulsion of the machine and the size and volume of
the steel abrasive.

 Floor Planing

Planers use a rotating drum with cutters or flails attached and abrade the surface removing
contaminants and texturing the surface. Generally used to reduce levels or to remove thick
coatings and failed screeds. The attachment of dust extraction minimises dust.

 Diamond Grinding

Grinders use horizontal rotating discs with diamond blades attached. This method leaves a
finely textured surface suitable for the application of floor coatings. Commonly used to re-
profile old floors, to smooth out tamped floors and remove high spots. Different blades will
facilitate the removal of latex and adhesive. Due to the fine key provided, grinding usually
provides the benefit of reducing the amount of material required to fill voids in the surface.
 Stripping

We use a ride on, gas propelled stripper to remove bonded materials from the floor surface
utilising a flexible steel blade. This enables the speedy removal of sheet vinyl, carpet, tiles
and linoleum from large areas. Once the old covering is removed the surface is prepared
utilising one of the previously described methods.
FLOORING SYSTEMS
Oil and chemical contamination, dust, spillages and cleaning difficulties can all combine to
pose real health and safety issues for staff and visitors alike. We specialise in a range of
quality finishes that are suitable for any environment including water based and solvent
free epoxies and polyurethanes with optional anti-skid and decorative finishes.

The range and choice of products allow us to tailor a system to your individual
requirements and budget.

ANTI SKID FLOORING

Health and Safety has become a key issue for everyone in today’s working environment. We
offer a specialised anti-skid finish to all of our floor systems. We realise that this type of
finish may only have a purpose in specific areas of the workplace and for this reason we
can offer a slip resistant option where required and often at little or no additional cost.
There are varying grades of anti-slip aggression which means that a wide variety of
environments can be catered for including outdoors where ice and wet can lead to
dangerous conditions.

Areas for application include:-

Walkways and Gangways

Fork Truck Aisles
Warehouse Loading Bays
Fire Escapes
Steel/Metal floors and Mezzanine Decks
Stair Wells
Traffic Calming in Car Parks and Roadways
Wet Areas
Food Preparation areas and kitchens
Areas of Oil or Chemical Contamination
Wooden Decking
DECORATIVE FLOORING and FLOOR MARKING

Where image and presentation are important we can offer a comprehensive range of
decorative floor finishes. These systems range from a simple coating to a fully personalised
system using decorative flakes and coloured floor aggregates. These can incorporate any
design including, for example, your corporate logo as an aid to re-enforcing your company
brand whilst providing a pleasant working environment. Some are suitable for outdoor
application and all leave a durable floor finish that is easy to maintain.

Lining and demarcation of walkways and fire exits in different colours can all be provided.

Areas for application include:-

Reception Areas Showrooms

Waiting Rooms Courtyards
Entrance Halls Retail Space
Canteens
INDUSTRIAL FLOOR SCREEDS

Old floors in particular are subject to deterioration from use over time. This leads to the
surface becoming uneven, often with holes resulting from heavy trafficking. In these
circumstances a simple coating will not be sufficient when a smooth durable surface is
required.

We offer a range of levelling systems and screed coatings to overcome these problems,
some of which can be left as the finished floor and others which leave a smooth surface
suitable for over coating.

These include:-

o Cementitious Polymer Modified Screeds

o Polyurethane Resin Screeds
o Epoxy Resin Screeds
o Chemical Resistant Screeds

A Cementitious polymer screed laid to falls

ANTI STATIC FLOORING (ELECTRO STATIC DISSIPATIVE)

The build up of static electricity is something we are all familiar with and it normally causes
little more than a mild shock or causes the adherence of dust to a surface. Concrete as a
surface is normally sufficiently conductive to pose no problems in an industrial
environment. The application of resin flooring to provide a harder wearing surface can
increase the problem as it is a natural insulator and can increase the build up of static. In
most environments this is not a problem but in some industries electrostatic build up of
sufficient intensity to cause sparks could ignite vapours or disrupt sensitive electrical
equipment. The solution is often to use an anti-static grade of resin incorporating carbon
powder or fibres. This will solve most instances although the choice of colours may be
restricted depending on the system selected. There are some cases where the inclusion of
copper tape connected to the building’s earthing system is necessary. Such tape is also used
to bridge expansion joints or any other feature which breaks up the continuity of the floor.

This is a complex area with more than one British Standard applying. The exact range of
acceptable resistance, test method (including test voltage) and any specific charge decay
requirements should be specified by the end user and we will work with our suppliers to
ensure that requirements are met.

Areas for application include:-

Electronic Assembly and Computer Manufacture

Biotechnology
Pharmaceutical Manufacture
Food & Drink Production
Clean Rooms generally
Biotechnology
Magnetic Tape and Photographic Film Production

DOMESTIC AND RETAIL ‘COMFORT’ FLOORING

A new range of polyurethane based self smoothing poured flooring is now available.
Laid on a re-cycled rubber crumb underlay and flexible itself maximum foot comfort
is achieved. Available in a full range of NCS colours and capable of being used
artistically to create bespoke designs it is ideally suited to home use, gymnasiums
and in retail outlets. A range of scratch resistant seal coats is available in matt, silk
or gloss with the optional addition of a slip resisting additive which does not
compromise cleanability.

Well maintained these floors have a long life of up to 50 years and reduce the long
term maintenance costs often associated with sheet or tiled floor coverings.
Chemically inert, VOC free and capable of being laid on virtually any surface from
tiles, concrete and timber - even over under floor heating.

Q Do I need a primer?

A: This will be decided on site survey. Primers are designed to perform three main
tasks; seal the substrate to reduce penetration and air release from concrete pores
and pin-holes, consolidate and strengthen an otherwise weak or dusty substrate and
to improve adhesion of the flooring system. A floor seal or coating can often act as its
own primer, two coats usually providing the full system. Flow applied flooring
systems, for example, benefit from the use of a primer (double priming in some
cases) by sealing small air pockets in the concrete base due to pores and pin-holes
and therefore reducing the risk of these bubbles rising to the surface and spoiling
the smooth, impervious finish which is the ultimate goal. Resin screeds tend to be
dry mixes which are almost impossible to apply and compact satisfactorily unless
the material is applied into a tacky primer or one that has been 'seeded' with a
material like dry silica sand. Even the heavy duty type 8 flooring will normally
benefit from a primer by reducing pin-holes and increasing adhesion.

Primers also serve to seal contaminated substrates, again increasing adhesion and
prevent contaminants damaging and de-bonding the whole system. Special primers
are available to deal with problems such as oil contamination and damp substrates
and their use (especially that of damp proof membranes) will be dictated by the
quality of the substrate.
