REFLECTING ON LEARNING – PSI

Inquiry Question 1
Reflection at Midway Point:
I have found many games throughout my practicum thus far. Many of which I could not use due to their age level and extra
equipment. However, the handful that I have used the students were very engaged. The one in particular was Tatanka Tatanka. It is
like a color monster but the tagger yells tatanka tatanka for students to run across the gym. If they are tagged they join the tagger
or in the correct context the herd. This was from the Dakota Nation for women and children to practice herding in buffalo
(tatanka). The students had such smiles on their faces and now we play this game as a warm up for handball. Now that the
handball unit is starting I want to find other ways to incorporate FNMI knowledge into the other subjects I am teaching. I will
adjust this goal to a broader spectrum of subjects.

confidence to teach FNMI activities.
Reflection at End of Term:
This goal I found I was very dedicated towards at the beginning of my PSI. As it is something I found during my modules that I
wanted to focus on. It was quite successful to be consistent in PE. Due to the completion of the unit I was not able to take on the
opportunity to apply it to my other subjects. My last week of PSI, I was able to teach social. As I think broadly when lesson planning
I did prepare to discuss FNMI knowledge in the subject of democracy, specifically values. I brought up the value of truth and
reconciliation day in Canada. Due to the little time I had left I did not have the opportunity to facilitate this further. I realized that I
should have incorporated health breaks instead of lesson plans. This would allow consistency of FNMI knowledge and continuous
teaching different indigenous Nations and their cultures.

Inquiry Question 2
Reflection at Midway Point:
The first week of school I had many differentiation options however, most of them were not applicable to the overall classroom
because the majority of the students suffer from anxiety. The differentiation options such as popsicle sticks and hot seat questions
were not in the best interest for this classroom. The differentiation I found to be effective were activities like review games. These
games include taboo and trashketball. Both suggested and used by my TA. These games allowed the students to be involved and
engaged. Another example is competitive vs non competitive teams in PE. Students have the right to choose what works well for
them while still fulfilling the outcome of the lesson. I want to find other ways to incorporate differentiation in my lesson plans.
However, this class is so excellent in self advocacy and performance. If they are aware they need some accommodation in their
learning process they are not afraid to tell me and ask for that.

differentiation options such as

environment for these students. I
have found pre-flight questioning
and mini white boards to be most
effective.
Reflection at End of Term:
This was a major focus for me from the beginning because I believe students need it for success. I first planned my lessons out by
differentiating the main concepts. Midway through I found it was more effective to plan out differentiation for the introduction,
activity, closing and transitions. Many of the students in the class have learning challenges and the classroom environment allows
students to follow through with accommodations. The benefit of this is the students have self efficacy of what they know they
need to succeed. However, some students sometimes need guidance on how to differentiate what they need. Having these
pre-made differentiation options made it easier to aid that. The guidance of my TA and the classroom EA made it significantly
easier. My TA gave me many techniques that worked well with these students, such as social taboo. The classroom EA showed me
how to make my lessons accommodate the students in the classroom with autism. She showed me the coloring sheets to use and
games that work for different lessons. This taught me a lot about the students' interests and needs for success.

Inquiry Question 3
Reflection at Midway Point: This is a new goal that I have made at the midway point. I do not expect that it will be completed but it
is something I have noticed is apparent in my teaching and has become my main challenge. I want to really focus on this for the
duration of my time in my PSI. It is something I want to excel at because I am afraid it will prevent me from not only becoming a
teacher but being a well rounded one.

Reflection at End of Term:
This has been a goal of mine since day one. However I still find I struggle with classroom management. I am told each week that I
am improving and this comes with time and experience. The one suggestion from my TA is to start thinking about being more of a
dominant figure in the classroom. I am kinda scared of this because I am afraid I am incapable and I will fail. This will be a
continuous goal in my teaching career.
