Lesson Students will learn expression of movement in music through American Sign Language
Overview: (ASL) in a grade k - 6 elementary music classroom. Students will learn how to create music
through psychomotor skills with the song “You are My Sunshine”. Students will learn how
to develop these skills as well as singing. First they will learn the song through a call and
response method. Follows the same procedure with the ASL signs. This lesson will also
address the importance of inclusive learning and appreciation of ASL music.

● Extend vocal development to include phrasing, enunciation and expression.

Introduction: The students will learn the song “You are my Sunshine” in American Sign Language (ASL).
They will first review new learning of movement in music through a song called “My Name is Joe”. This
song requires psychomotor skills and creativity. Then they will discuss ASL. What is it and how can we use it
in music? Then we will learn the lyrics and the signs.
