1 On top of Wawel hill in Krakow, Poland is a grand castle. It was the home of Polish kings
throughout the Middle Ages. The castle is a well-known tourist attraction in Poland. However, what
continues to attract tourists even more over the years is a cave at the bottom of the hill. According to
legend, it was the home of the Wawel Dragon, Poland’s most famous beast!
|2 | | There are various versions of this famous legend. One of the older stories tells of a small
village on the River Vistula near Wawel hill. Many of the villagers believed that a powerful dragon was
asleep in the cave at the bottom of the hill. Old people in the village warned the others not to wake
the dragon or they would all be in danger.
Some of the young people in the village did not believe in the dragon. They decided to
explore the cave and prove there was no dragon there. They took some torches and went into the
cave. Once inside the cave, they heard heavy breathing and saw a huge scary beast. They started to
run away, but it was too late. The dragon was awake!
|4 | | As the young people were running away, they turned back to look at the cave. In the entrance,
they saw a fierce fire-breathing dragon with six arms and a long tail. From that day on, the people lived
in fear. Everyday the dragon carried off and ate their farm animals. Sometimes the dragon would even
take people instead of animals.
|5 | | Many brave men of the village tried to kill the dragon, but didn’t succeed. One day, a shoe
maker’s wise apprentice named Krakus (Krak) thought of a better way to kill the dragon. He stuffed
some dead sheep with sulphur. Then he placed the sheep outside the dragon’s cave and waited for
the dragon to come out. Eventually the dragon came out of his cave. It saw the sheep and greedily ate
them. The sulphur began to burn inside its stomach and it ran to the river to drink some water. The
dragon became very sick.
|6 | [ Krak followed the dragon and began to throw stones at it. The dragon tried to blow fire at Krak
but couldn't because of all the water in its stomach. It continued to drink and drink until finally it
exploded. A simple shoemaker was victorious in killing the dragon and saving the village.
|7 | | The people were overjoyed and made Krak the ruler of the village. Together they built a
castle on Wawel hill. Krak became a great king. More and more people came to Wawel hill and it
| eventually became the great city of Krakow in honour of Krakus.

Ready, set, action! Get ready for an experience of a lifetime with the Holiday Movie Company. We are
not a film school, nor do we offer qualifications in film production. What we do offer, however, is a
unique filmmaking holiday in a beautiful location with experienced filmmakers.
Our holidays are aimed at beginners who want to learn about filmmaking. Our guests come together
to make a short film over a period of two weeks. Guests choose what position in the film production
team they are interested in. Positions in areas such as lighting, sound and costume design are
available. All guests w ill have the opportunity to direct a part of the film and work with professional
actors. The film crew will have a screenplay to follow, however, all decisions in the filming are under
the control of the director and crew. Our role as a company is simply to help and advise each guest.
Guests must make their own travel arrangements to the holiday movie company. Once there, we
provide hotel accommodation, all necessary equipment and transport to and from the different
shooting locations. Before production starts, we will demonstrate how to use the equipment and train
guests for their positions in the film project. At the end of the training, the guests w ill get together
with the actors and produce a small part of the film as a test piece. Once filming begins, there w ill
be a daily filming schedule. Some days might be longer than others due to weather and filming
problems. Of course, there will be time off for sightseeing and relaxation. We want our guests to have
lots of fun in a new place, meet like-minded people, learn new skills and have an unforgettable
experience making a film . Our guests not only leave with pictures of what they did on holiday, but
with a professional film to show their friends back home.

Making a Difference:
a little water at a time.
Did you know that one person dies every 15 seconds of a water-related disease or that about one
billion people in the world live without access to clean, safe drinking water? Scott Harrison didn’t.
About 8 years ago, Scott was living in a fancy flat in New York City and driving an expensive car. He
had a great job promoting nightclubs and events. Life was easy and fun for Scott, yet he felt very
empty inside because his life had no real purpose. So he decided to do something about it.
Scott volunteered on a floating hospital with an organisation called Mercy Ships, which offers free
medical care to the world’s poorest countries. Doctors and other technical staff from around the
world leave their jobs and work for free helping thousands of people who need medical care. Scott
went to Liberia, Africa. He took the position of photojournalist. What Scott saw there changed his
life. He was shocked to see thousands and thousands of people waiting in a queue every day for
medical attention. Some of them had very serious medical problems. What Scott realised in his two
years of service with Mercy Ships was that about 80% of all the diseases they encountered were
due to unsafe water and poor sanitation.
Scott returned to New York City with a mission: he would form a charity to provide clean water in
poor countries. Scott founded “charity: water” on the night of his 31st birthday. He threw a huge
party. Instead of gifts, he asked his guests to donate money to his new charity. He raised 15,000
dollars that night, which went to fixing and building wells in Uganda. Scott used his natural talent for
promoting things to turn “charity: water” into a very successful humanitarian organisation. Since its
beginning “charity: water” has provided 1.5 million people with clean water, with 3 ,2 0 0 projects in
17 countries. Scott’s plans don’t stop here. The organisation’s goal is to bring clean water to 100
million people by 2020. Why do all this? “Guilt has never been part of it," according to Scott. “ It’s
the excitement, instead, presenting people with an opportunity - you have an amazing chance to build
a well!”

1 Scott left New York City because he wanted to change job.

2 Mercy Ships is a charity hospital in Liberia, Africa.
3 Doctors and staff don't get paid on Mercy Ships.
4 Scott volunteered as a doctor on a floating hospital.
5 Unsafe water caused many of the illnesses of Mercy Ships' patients.
