CARTOGRAPHY USING QGIS (MYSORE POPULATION
DENSITY)
SNEHAL KISHOR KET

12-11-2021

AIM:
To perform cartography using QGIS.

SOFTWARE USED:

QGIS 3.16 (long term release)

THEORY:
 Maps are the interface to GIS.
 Common map elements are the title, body, legend, north arrow, scale bar,
acknowledgement and map border.
 Cartography is making and study of maps in all aspects.
 A basic element of cartography is symbolization, the use of different map symbols to
represent spatial features.
 Title: This is a section that is usually found at the top of your map. It gives the description
of the map.
 Legend: The keys or legends of your map are somewhat symbols that represent some
information on your map, and this prevents your map from being crowded with too many
words. The representation of these symbols is usually written on a side of your map.
 Scale Indicator: Your scale indicator typically tells you about the measurement
representation of your map.
 Grids: These are lines that usually represent the longitude and latitude.
 North Arrow: This is an indicator on your map that shows the cardinal points.

PROCEDURE :
STEP 01:
Open the digitized map of the Mysore population map. For that shapefile open the attribute table
delete the unnecessary data and keep only ward number population data fields.
Now add the area of the ward and population density fields in the attribute table.
Calculate the area in the attribute table by Right Click on Mysore population > Open Attribute
Table > Enable Editing > area field > Click ℇ > Expression table > Double Click Geometry >
Double Click $area > Update all.
After calculating the are calculate population density by dividing the population of ward by area
of ward in the attribute table.
Right Click on Mysore population > Open Attribute Table > Enable Editing > population density
field> Click ℇ > Expression table > Double Click Fields and Values > Select Population / area
expression > Click OK > Update all.

STEP 02: This will create a new layer as Mysore population density. Now
Right click on > Properties > Symbology > select field as Population density > Graduated
variation > select equal interval > set the interval gap.

4
STEP 03: Now to perform the cartography, Project > New Print Layout > Give the Title > New
window will open.

5
6
STEP 04: Add Item Menu > Add Map > population density map will get added.

7
STEP 04: Add the elements of map one by one as follow.
Add Item > Add Legend > Add Item > Add Scale Bar > Add Item > Add Title > Give the title to
the map > Add Item > Add North Arrow.

STEP 05: To add the Grid to the map, Item Properties > Grid > Add New Grid by clicking +
sign > select the grid type > select the CRS > Set the grid interval.

13
STEP 06: Finally, Go to Layout >Select Export as image.

14
RESULT:

INFERENCE:
1. Cartography is making and study of maps.
2. By using QGIS we can create map.
3. In the QGIS By using the ADD ITEM menu we can add different elements in the map TITLE,
SCALE BAR, LEGEND, GRID, NORTH ARROW etc.
4. The maps created in the QGIS, can be exported into different format such as PDF, IMAGE,
SVG etc
