Electric components, bus
The components catalogue’s publication number will be found at the bottom of
each component sheet. For buses, this number is 16:56-11.
If a component is common to both trucks and buses, two publication numbers
will be found at the bottom of the sheet: 16:06-11 and 16:56-11.
Some sheets which are also applicable to trucks do not have the bus manual’s
publication number and references to the wiring diagram, however. These sheets
will be updated successively.
Some of the wiring diagrams referred to may not be included in your workshop
manual. If such case, this is because the diagram has not yet been published but
will be in the near future.

Note: Page numbers are not used in this man-

ual. The pages are instead in alpha-numerical
order. This makes it easier to insert new loose
leaves which are issued when new components
are introduced.
New pages are also issued when a component
is replaced with a new one. The first issue of
the component page is called version 1. The
next page is given the version number 2 and so
on. If the component remains unchanged but
the Description of Operation or Work Descrip-
tion have been altered, the old version number
is retained. In this case, the old page should be
discarded and the new one put in its place.
This manual is slightly different from the rest
of the Workshop Manual. We are aware that it
may seem strange to begin with, but we hope
that it has advantages that outweigh any disad-
vantages. 1 This shows the version of the component
sheet. Version 2 does not replace version 1
We are also aware that it could be improved in
as there are vehicles equipped with
both layout and content and we are planning to

into a practical aid for our mechanics. 2 This shows when the sheet was written

older one.

Cable quality
Cables routed in and under the instrument
panel should be of a standard that withstands

close to air ducts, the temperature can be as
high as 70-80 °C.

3. Splicing cables

3. Splicing cables

General
Damaged cables should preferably be replaced
in their entirety. If splicing is absolutely neces-
sary, it must be done using a joining sleeve and
heat shrink tube. The sleeve selected is deter-
mined by the cross-section of the conductor.

4. Fuses

4. Fuses

The size of the load must be taken into account

when selecting a suitable fuse.
For the fuse to have a long service life, the
rated current (size of fuse) should be twice the
load under normal conditions.

Fuse breakpoint
The fuses will take more than the rated current
in cold conditions. The breakpoint will be
approximately 35% higher than the rated cur-
rent. A breakpoint is needed to calculate the
cross-sectional area.
The breakpoint will be:
1.35 x the rated current.

Calculating the size of fuse

Output triangle
When extra loads are connected, it is important
to calculate how many amperes they require in U = voltage drop in volts (V)
order to be able to select the right fuse. The cal- I = current in amperes (A)
culation is made using the so-called output tri- P = output in watts (W)
angle. This shows the relationship between
output (P), voltage (U) and current (I).
Place your finger on the unit you wish to calcu-
late. Read the equation in the triangle.
Example: The load to be mounted has an out-
put of 260 W.
1 The load requires: 260 W

load current: 260 / 24 = 10.8 A.

2 Size of fuse: 10.8 x 2 = 21.6 A.

Select: 25 A (standard size).

5. Selecting a cross-sectional area

The cross-sectional area is selected by taking Example: The load that is to be mounted has
the following into account: an output of 260 W and a cable length of
4 metres. The size of fuse will be 25 A (see
• the fuse breakpoint; Fuses).
• the length of the cable in metres (from sup- 1 Fuse breakpoint:

Contact housing
6 pole: Insulator PA66, operating temperature -40 °C to +90 °C
17 pole: Insulation made from glass-filled PBT, operating temperature -40 °C to +120 °C.
The connector is coded for its specific location. For service requirements, only ”code 0” is available,
suitable for all locations.

Cable terminals
c0f9605.1sv

Pins and sleeves are available in phosphor-bronze of several types, depending on the cross-section to
be connected.

FUNCTION
The contact housing is designed for a cab envi-
ronment.
The cable terminals are rated for currents up to
10 A.
The connector is sensitive to vibration. In order
to resist vibration, the wiring must be attached
securely.
Pins and sleeves are secured with a ”secondary
lock” feature.

Crimping to lead
The cable terminals can be crimped onto the
lead using a suitable tool.

Removing pins and sleeves from connector

The pin part lock is only opened by being
prised out about 3 mm.
The sleeve part lock is removed normally.

thermostat.
The thermostat closes when the temperature
falls to between +3 °C and +11°C, and opens
when it rises to between 19 °C and 25 °C.

REMARKS
The three types of relay have the same function
and are interchangeable. The EDC relay has a
yellow cover.

FUNCTION
All relays in the truck’s basic electrical system
are located in the central electric unit (P2) or
behind this.
The relays described here are miniature relays
of plug-in type. Other relays are used - such as
flasher relays, headlamp relays and time delay
relays, but these are described on a separate
sheet.
The miniature relays are designed for switch-
ing currents of up to 15 amps.
The miniature relays are all of the same type. If
a relay breaks, it can be temporarily replaced
with a relay from another feature which is less

FUNCTION
The hand lever (S43) has six positions which
control the braking torque of the retarder. The
switch in the end of the lever (S45) is used for
manually engaging downhill speed control.
S45 is fitted only to trucks equipped with ABS.
The control unit receives the signal from S43
on pin 8. This signal provides the control unit
with information about requested brake torque.
The control unit receives the signal from S45

Checking S43/S45 is easiest using Scania
Diagnos, but it can also be done ’manually’ as
follows:
S43
Detach the panel with the lever and measure
the voltage between pin 7 (green lead) and
earth. The ignition should be on and the lever
should remain attached to its wiring. In posi-
tion 0, the lever should show about 0.5 V and
in its max. position about 4.5 V. See graph.
S45
Detach the panel with the lever and measure
the resistance between pins 1 and 5 on the
lever. If working correctly, these pins should
be shorted when S45 is pressed.

FUNCTION
T1 (front circuit) and T2 (rear circuit) have
identical functions. They each have a sensor
and a monitor, the former issuing a voltage sig-
nal to the air pressure gauge for brake circuits 1

The role of the monitor is to give warning that
the air pressure is too low. When the pressure
falls below 5 bar, the monitor earths buzzer N1
(a built-in function in buses that is located in
the instrument cluster) which then buzzes a
warning signal.

If necessary, a loose sensor can be checked on
the table of characteristics by lowering it,
together with a thermometer, into a bath of
