THE LEGEND OF SUMUR SONGO, GRESIK

Narator : In Gresik, There was a legend as Rara Jonggrang legend but the legend happened in
Gresik. It was located in Sumur Songo Village, Panglima Sudirman street.
Once upon a time, in Gresik, there was Sunan Giri asked his granddaughter, Nyai
Tumengkang Sari to spread Islam in Sidokumpul vilage.

Sunan Giri asked her: “ You should spread Islam in Sidokumpul Village because I heard that people
still worship to ghost or danyang and statues”.
Nyai Tumengkang Sari: “All right, My Grandfather. I will do that”

Narrator: Then, Nyai Tumengkang Sari went to Sidokumpul village. In Sidokumpul village,
Nyai Tumengkang Sari spread Islam by curing all people over there. All people over
there were cured freely by Nyai Tumengkang Sari. All people were satisfied.
(ACTING: Nyai Tumengkang Sari healed the people over there)

Narrator: One day, a prince of Majapahit heard the ability of Nyai Tumengkang Sari. Beside that, a
prince knew that Nyai Tumengkang Sari was so beautiful so he decided to go to Gresik to
meet and to propose Nyai Tumengkang Sari to be his wife.

(ACTING : A prince observed Nyai Tumengkang Sari curing the people)

Prince of Majapahit said her: “ Nyai Tumengkang Sari, I am here to meet you and I wanted to
propose you to be my wife.”
Narrator : Nyai Tumengkang Sari was rather afraid because the prince of Majapahit was
very powerful and bad. Beside that, the prince had different religion with her.
(ACTING : Nyai Tumengkang Sari was afraid and the prince )

Nyai Tumengkang Sari said,” I will accept your proposal if you can make 10 wells in a night. Can
you do that?”.

Prince of Majapahit said her : “ OK, I will make them a night as well as your request.”

Nyai Tumengkang Sari said, “ Make them tomorrow night after dusk or Maghrib!”. “ but you must
make them only one night.”
Narrator : In the midnight Nyai Tumengkang Sari prayed Tahajjud and Istikhoroh prayers.
She asked Allah to give guidence to her. Not long time after that, she got guidance
from God.
(ACTING : Nyai Tumengkang Sari did Tahajjud and Istikhoroh prayers)

Narrator: “You should sit on one of the wells made by the prince”

Narrator: In the decided time, after dusk, the prince started to make wells. He used his power
to call his genies to help him to make 10 wells. In early morning, shubuh, 10 wells
had been finished. All genies were gone.
(ACTING : The prince made wells by using his all genies)

Narrator: When he made wells, Nyai Tumengkang Sari observed, prayed and sat on one of the
wells.
(ACTING : Nyai Tumengkang Sari observed, prayed and sat on one of the wells.)

(ACTING: The prince came to Nyai Tumengkang Sari

The Prince said : “ I have finished 10 wells and you must be my wife.”

Nyai Tumengkang Sari answered: “Wait a minute. Count them first”.

(ACTING: The Prince counted them.)

Narrator : When counting all wells. The wells were only nine. He counted again but the well were
only nine. He forgot a well sat by Nyai Tumengkang Sari. Then he went away and he
felt shameful.
(ACTING: The Prince went away and he felt shameful)
Narrator : Before he went away, He swore that Nyai Tumengkang Sari could not marry untill she
passed away.

The Prince said : “I swear that you will not be able to marry forever (ANGRILY)

Narrator : Finally, Nyai tumengkang Sari did not marry with the prince of Majapahit and she was
unmarried, spread Islam and cure all people untill she passed away. Since on that time
that place are called Desa Sumur Songo or Nine Wells Village
