TOPIC: Beginning Teacher’s Thoughts on New Literacies in a Digital World

Both the youngsters and oldies enjoy the privileges and benefits technology brought.

1. What privileges and benefits that technology brought do you enjoy?

• Easy access from billions of resources.

- Nowadays, when, I, as student, needed to find data about a certain
topic, I just have to type a few keywords related to that topic, and the
Google, as one of the fruit of technology, would give me, not just one
article but a lot of possible resources that I could read so that I could
find what I am looking for.
• Expanded Communication
- These days we already have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other
social media that we could use to communicate with a lot of people
from different parts of the world. I was able to talk and see my
relatives from Canada and Las Vegas because of technology. I do not
have to write a letter to talk to them. I don’t have to travel to see
them. By the use of my cellphone, my WiFi, and my social media
account, I could see them. I could hear them and I could speak with
them like they were just in front of me. Aside from that, I was able to
have friends too by the use of my accounts especially when they saw
that you both have the same interests, you were just going to be
surprised that they already added you as a friend or messaged you to
confirm if you really have the same interests.
• Extra hand in doing tasks and can save a lot of time and energy
- A lot of our things were all now high-tech as they call them. We don’t
have to use brooms anymore. There were already vacuums that could
be manipulated by hand or by a remote control and those vacuum will
do the cleaning. We don’t have to write a lot anymore in a paper. We
already have laptops where we can just type and then save that from
our files. We do not have to buy DVDs and CDs to watch movies. We
can just search on Youtube or Netflix and then chill. We do not have to
draw anymore, we could just search the image and then print. We
could save a lot of time and energy because an extra helping hand,
which was the technology, was already here.
2. How do you help the OLDIES in your family or relatives enjoy these privileges and benefits?

As stated in the article, we cannot enjoy the privileges and

benefits that the technology has prepared for us if we do not know on
how to use them. Specifically, the oldies. It was understandable since in
their generation, technology was not yet existing. It might be existing but
not as active and as enhance as now. With that, as the younger one, which
I grew up using the technology, I could help them by teaching them on
how to use the available technologies we have at home. They were saying
that it would be hard to teach them since they could easily forget things,
with that I have to have the patience in guiding them every time they
would be needing me. Example, at home, my mama and papa, were not
that good in using gadgets, so whenever we had a vacant time, my sisters
and I would teach them on how to connect the device in the internet. How
to search when they wanted to watch at Youtube. How to use Facebook,
in posting, in chatting, and video calling our relatives in Manila and
abroad.

When we bought our refrigerator, my older sister was the one

who read the manual and then I am the one demonstrating the steps on
my mother so that even when we were not home, she could use the
refrigerator. Now, she was not asking for help anymore. She already knew
on how to manipulate the refrigerator. Same also with our air conditioner
and small oven. At first, every time she was going to use it, she would call
one of us, but now she could manage alone.

By observing them and seeing them using the different fruits of

technology I was fulfilled knowing that despite of the generation gaps,
they could still enjoy the benefits of the changes happening in our society.
An educator is also to be an innovator, the facilitator of learning. It is the duty of teachers to
introduce and bring change.
3. Cite phrases or sentences from the article that explicitly tell us what teachers should do for students to embrace the
New Literacies.

- As we teachers, interact and collaborate with our students with the use of technology and new literacies
skills, we must acknowledge too the multicultural society we live in.
➢ If teachers will always consider that we were in a multicultural society, he or she would be able to
use the resources intelligently and considerably. In this way, he or she can avoid leaving out or
disregarding the other culture of his or her students. Everybody will be included and nobody will be
left behind. If students would feel that they were all accepted and being considered, they would have
the interest to learn and embrace the new literacies that they needed to acquire.
- In classroom settings and instructions, different and new technologies appropriate to make teaching fun,
effective and conclusive are being used such as cellular phones, laptops, projectors and internet.
➢ If teachers would be using cellular phones, laptops, projectors, and internet in making his or her
teaching fun, collaborative and active, then student will automatically engage themselves too, since
they could see that using these technologies could bring learning in a fun way. Like what teachers
were always saying, when the students were being motivated, they will always be ready in embracing
new learnings and changes.
- Teachers, should always attend the needs of our learners
➢ As teachers, we always have to consider our students’ needs and interest. In that way we could apply
and supply those needs in the teaching and learning process. And again, the sense of belongingness
would made them feel included, counted, and as part of the learning circle. The more they feel that
they were belong, the more they will actively engage themselves in the teaching and learning process
and with that there’s a high possibility that they will wholeheartedly embrace the new literacies.
