PREFACE

This module is a project of the Curriculum Implementation Division particularly


the Learning Resource Management and Development Unit, Department of
Education, Schools Division of Mountain Province which is in response to the
implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum.

Hello young reader! Today, you will begin a series of
learning adventures that have been developed in order to help
you become a better reader.
This material was designed specially to help you develop
the skill of recognizing the common terms in English relating to
parts of a book.

You have been reading different books at home and in


school. How did you take care of them? Read the following
and find out if you have observed the following.
1. Cover your book with plastic or old newspapers.
2. Be sure your hands are clean when you turn the pages.
3. Use a piece of paper or thin cardboard as bookmarks.
4. Do not fold the pages.
5. Do not write on the cover or in the pages.

Have you read a story about a book? Well, read this


story and find out what it tells about Patuki.

Patuki Got a Book in her Birthday

“Wow!” shouted Patuki as she opened the bag. Her


mother gave it during her birthday. A book was inside the bag.
“Thank you, mother. Now, I have a book to read,” said Patuki
smiling to her mother.
Patuki’s book is entitled, “Stories of Alapu”. It has five
parts. These are the cover, title page, table of contents, text,
and glossary.
“I really love this book. I will take good care of it,” said
Patuki while wiping the cover with her hands.

2. What did her mother give her during her birthday?
3. Did Patuki like what her mother gave her? Go back to
the story and underline the word that will prove your
answer.

Here are the parts of a book mentioned in the story.

A book has different parts. Some of these are:


1. Front and back cover that protect the pages.
2. Title page consists of the full title of the book, the
writer, and the publisher.
3. Table of contents is a list of the topics and their
pages.
4. The text is the body that contains different ideas.
5. Glossary is an alphabetical list of words and their
meanings.

cover, title page, table of contents, text, and glossary. Complete
the paragraph by writing the appropriate word in each blank.

Every book has parts. Each part has a function. The front
