LESSON 1: WHAT IS LITERATURE?

ACTIVITY NO. 1

In a maximum of 16 sentences, write a short essay about your realizations during this
COVID-19 Pandemic. Write at the space below.

For me my realizations about this COVID-19 is causing a big problem to people. Many
had loss their jobs it because of the quarantine. I thought this is the end because millions of
people died. People are fear to go outside but sometimes people keep going outside that’s why
more and more are infected. But we need to keep our social distancing to stop the spread of the
virus. People now are praying so that the virus would be gone immediately. But why churches
are not allowed to enter but malls are allowed, it’s unfair for the people that praise Jesus but it’s
okay we can also pray in our houses. People suffered hungry and thirsty but we are thankful to
our mayor because they give us reliefs like water and foods. The virus helps our surroundings
fresh air because there are no cars that causing the polluted air. And the ozone layer now is
healed, the hole of ozone layer is now recovered. There are positive and negative causes the
virus, like the positive is helping the ozone layer to be healed and the air polluted is now clear
while the negative is many people died from it. We need to protect ourselves because it’s the
only way we can help each other. But many people today are not obeying the laws they keep
going outside even though it’s risky. We need to help each other so that the virus will disappear
or it won’t help spread.

1. What is literature?

Literature is an art of self-expression. Literally, it means “an acquaintance with letters” as in the first
sense

given in the Oxford English Dictionary. In Latin it called literra.

2. What are the types of literature?

There are 4 types of literature and those are Poetry, Prose, Fictional literature, and Non-fictional
literature.

3. Enumerate the importance of literature.

Literature is important because it educates and entertains, it leads us to understand the life of man, it
enlivens human interest, enriches and colors our imagination, and it is an expression of thought, feeling,
emotions and attitudes towards life

4. Compare and contrast the four literary genres.

The four literary genres are poem, short story, essay and drama. Poem is a composition written in verses
having standard measurements and written with a higher intensity of artistic beauty, while short essay is a
small commercial fiction and It composed with an easy beginning illustrated in its exposition, while essay
is a literary composition that presents the author’s point of view about any particular topic in a detailed
way, while the drama is a mode of fictional representation through dialogue and performance.

5. What do you expect from the subject?

I expect that the lesson are about the pass or the history but it was all an literature.

My name is Hanz Christian B. Real. I’m from Poblacion, Merida, Leyte. I live with my family.
I’m 16 years old now. I’m the youngest of my three brothers. I like to help my mother like cooking, I’m
not good at cooking but I try my best just to help my mom. Sometimes I like to play online games with
my brothers and friends. Sometimes I don’t have time in studying it because I play too much games. I like
to eat chicken and fish. My favorite dessert is mango float. I love to eat street foods with my friends too.
My hobby is playing instruments like guitar, piano, and especially drums. My ambition in life is to
become an Business Man or a professional drummer and have own crew bands. My fear in life is
darkness, I really afraid in dark like I don’t want to be alone when I go dark places. I don’t even watch
horror movies when I’m alone. My weakness is sometimes I get bullied but I ignore them. I’m a friendly
person even though I don’t know them. I don’t have enemies since childhood. I make friends with my
enemies. And talk to strangers but my mom said that don’t talk to people that you don’t know. I
comfortable when I talk to strangers it’s because that’s the way to make friends and to socialize the
people. Don’t think negative just go with your positive thinking so that you can be successful in your life.
