Solvent Turpentine

Hazard

Solvent Turpentine can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion and rapid pulse. * Breathing
Turpentine can irritate the lungs causing coughing and/or shortness of breath. Higher exposures can
cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), a medical emergency, with severe
shortness of breath.

Used

Turpentine has been traditionally applied as a cleaning agent for paints, lacquers, rubber, and
varnishes, as well as disinfectants and insecticides. However, particular usage of turpentine is in the
pharmaceutical industry, and also perfumery, sprays, deodorizers, and stimulating ointments.

Stored

Turpentine should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers.
Turpentine can undergo auto-oxidation in contact with air and can generate heat that may
spontaneously ignite in a confined space. ... To prevent static sparks, containers should be grounded
and bonded for transfers.

PPE used

When handling chemicals, solvents, and (in some cases) blood, thin, non-porous gloves are
recommended. Similar to surgical gloves, nitrile and latex provide the most reliable protection while
still allowing dexterity.

Control Risk

preventing unnecessary solvent evaporation by using the minimum amount for the job - keep lids on
containers and use sealed containers for solvent -contaminated waste. Do not leave solvent-
contaminated rags lying around. do not use solvents to remove paint, grease etc from your skin.

got three stars for ease of application and value for money.

PPE used

Most coveralls (disposable or reusable) will come with a protective hood attached to them. This
makes the demand for separate protective hoods reasonably limited. However, a hood is arguably
the most important kind of clothing protection. If you don’t have one (or it’s damaged) then these
separate hoods can be a great alternative to buying new coveralls.

Control Risk

Most paints are very safe. However, exposure to paint and its fumes has the potential to cause
irritation of the skin, eyes, and throat. This can often go away through cleaning the affected area or
going out into fresh air.
