Ch-13-Suspension

Introduction Examples
• As suspension structure is a
structural system which
distributes loads through cables or
membranes to supports
• This systems must be designed to
transmit tension forces. Cables
and thin membranes are capable
of resisting tension only.
• Material used in this system
should be strong in tension.

Load distribution Cable form & steep cable slope

• Load Distribution is by tension
cables and membranes;
• The cable shape is determined by
cable loads & stresses (figure 13.3);
• Applied load in the cable & slope of
the cable determines the magnitude
of the thrust and size of resisting
elements (supports);
• Thrust generated in cables system is
similar to arch, related to cable
geometry;
• Steep slope = less thrust (figure
13.4);

Cable slopes Examples

• Intermediate slope= increasing
thrust (figure 13.5);
• Column support size increases;
• Very shallow slope= max. thrust
(figure 13.6) – cable size &
column sizes increases;

Ch-13-Suspension/ Singly Curved System

Loading & Stability Examples

• Independent cable system
(figure 13.7):
• Use of singly curved suspension
cables;
• Using structural members or ties
to stress and hold (stabilize) the
cables in place acting
independently;
• Cables with Beams- All cables
stressed uniformly (figure 13.8):

Loading & Stability Examples

• Cables with Beams with single
load(figure 13.9):
• Appling single concentrated load
on beam ends deforms the beams
and the stress in the cables
becomes unequal and system
becomes unstable;

Loading & Stability Examples

• Weighted Cable system with
Beams with large uniform
load(figure 13.10):
• When large uniform dead load is
part of cable system ;
• All cables are uniformly stressed
and system is stable;
• Wind loads will effect little on
stability.

Loading & Stability Examples

• Tied Cable system (figure
13.11):
• Stability without dead loads;
• Cables anchored to ground
provide stability in most loading
conditions;

Doubly Curved Cable system

Loading & Stability Examples

• Doubly curved Cable system (figure
13.12):
• Use of suspension cables & stabilizing
cables (wind up lift) at 90 degrees;
• Cross cables are used instead of ties and
beams in singly curved cable systems;
• Two types of cables Primary cables and
cross cables;
• Use of Arches to transmit loads to
supports;
• This system is stable and resist flutter
(movement due to wind) using
geometry of doubly curved surfaces.

Loading & Stability Examples

• Circular suspension system (figure TR
13.13) & (figure 13.14):
• Uses tension ring(TR) and VCS
compression rings(CR); CR
• Loads are transmitted by tension
cables to compression ring;
• Compression ring resolves the thrust;
• System is very stable with minimum
flutter;
• Use of pre-stressed vertical
compression struts (VCS) to dampen
flattering;
