A. Connecting a projector

It should be quite easy to connect your laptop to a projector. First, check that both
the laptop and the projector are off. Then connect the projector cable to the laptop: just
plug it into the video socket. Most laptops have one, usually at the back or side. After that,
insert the projector’s power cable into a power socket and turn on the computer and the
projector. Next, the computer has to find out the projector’s resolution: press the ‘Function’
key (‘Fn’) on the laptop and, at the same time, press the key with a picture of screen on it.
The ‘Fn’ key is usually on the bottom left, near the ‘Shift’ key, and the key with the screen
picture on it is usually on the top row of keys, on the left.

B. A network is a group of linked computer or other devices. There are two kinds of networks
that are in common use. In Local Area Networks (LANs) computers are close together –
perhaps in the same building. They might be connected directly to each other by cable or
through a wireless network such as wi-fi. In contrast, Wide Area Networks (WANs) cover a
larger area and usually use telephone lines or mobile phone system to connect. A LAN can
be a part of a WAN.
There are different types of wired networks. One is a star system. In this, each computer (or
other device) is connected to a central server. Another type is a ring system. This is a
network that has each computer linked to two others, in a bus system there is a central
cable which is called a bus, and each computer is linked to it. Some large networks use a
mesh. In this, each computer is linked to several others. This has one big advantage: if one
connection breaks, the data can use other connections. Therefore, it is difficult to break a
mesh network.

C. French and English doctors sometimes have different ideas about medical care. In France,
doctors often give strong medicine to move blood to the brain. However, doctors in England
do not think that is helpful. French doctors often worry about patient’s liver and diet. But
English doctors do not. French doctors also take stomach illness very seriously. They often
give their patients magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D. But in England, doctors often say that
stomach problems are not serious at all. They usually think the stomach problems are
caused by worrying too much. French doctors are usually interested in trying out a variety of
new treatments. English doctors, however, first wait to see if the new treatments really
work.

Harry Potter

The idea for the Harry Potter books came to Rowling on a train. She was traveling from Manchester
to London. Suddenly she thought of a book about a boy named Harry Potter with magic powers. She
was immediately very excited. She knew it was a good idea and she knew it was going to be fun to
write.

She thought about the book for the rest of the trip. By the time she arrived in London many things
were clear to her. She knew the names of Harry’s friends and of his school and she knew what was
going to happen to him in the book. She also knew that she was going to write seven books about
Harry Potter. At the time, Rowling was working on another novel but she left that and started writing
about Harry Potter.

Soon after that, she moved to Manchester, England, to live with a friend. She only stayed there a
short while. That year, after many years of illness, her mother died. Rowling was very unhappy. She
decided that she needed to leave England for a while. So she went to Oporto, Portugal, and taught
English in a language school. After six months, she met a Portuguese journalist, Jorge Arantes. They
got married, and the next year their daughter, Jessica, was born. This was very happy moment in
Rowling’s life. However, the happy times didn’t last. After only a few months, Rowling realized that
marriage wasn’t working. She also needed a better job, so she decided to leave Portugal. She and
Jessica went to live near Rowling’s sister in Edinburgh, Scotland.

All this time, Rowling was working on the first Harry Potter book. In Edinburgh, it was hard for her to
find time for writing. She was taking courses to become a teacher, and she had to take care of little
Jessica. Rowling often took Jessica for long walks until the child fell asleep. Then she took her to a
café, ordered a cup of coffee, and started writing.

When the book was finally finished, Rowling had to find a publisher. That took over a year. But at last
Bloomsbury Publisher accepted the book. According to Rowling, this was the second best moment in
her life, after the birth of Jessica. When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in
July 1997, she walked around all day with a copy under her arm.
