WHAT IS IT

We are living in a visual world. The beginning of the

internet, the media such as the radio and TV broadcast,
other mobile devices which allow us to capture still and
moving images
easily and the appearance of video-sharing platforms
such as Facebook, YouTube and the likes. All of these
contributed to an extraordinary rise in visual
communication and considered good sources of
information around the world.
Using these sources of information will depend on the
capability of the person who needs them. This module will
help you understand the similarities and differences between
the content of materials viewed (nonprint) which are consist
mostly of images and sounds and use print and speech to other
sources of information (printed) which are consist mostly of
text and generally use pictures, under the following categories
and/or the advantages and disadvantages of the first source
over the latter and vice versa
Environment
The first advantage most of us think about is probably the trees saved by using
electronic format rather than publishing via ink on paper.

Search
Searching a document in nonprint digital format on DVD is faster than searching
a print book.

Availability
Nonprint materials can be available via the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, and 365 days in a year. Print materials that are not in your personal
collection aren’t to have this type
of availability.
Lifetime
Users can read and enjoy a novel many more times when it is digital than in
print format.

Cost
Subscribing to online databases costs less than acquiring and maintaining
multiple copies of multivolume reference books and encyclopedias.

Emotional Impact
Print versions of history tell stories that engage their readers. These same
histories, captured orally from their subjects, can leave a deeper impression on
listeners because of the impact of emotion heard in the voices of the storytellers.
Space Requirement
Nonprint materials require less shelf space. For example, multiple DVDs need
much less shelf space than a multivolume encyclopedia.

Concrete Document
Many people use the internet but still like to hold a physical newspaper or
magazines in their hands. Physically turning the pages gives a feeling of
satisfaction and control unmatched by any electronic medium.
The types of media which can influence awareness are more numerous than ever.
Older media platforms, including newspapers, radio and television, are still
available but have lost popularity since the beginning of the internet. Within the
category of the internet media,
anyone finds respected sites such as web versions of print newspapers and
government websites alongside opinion-based sites such as blogs and message
boards.
