Notes to the Teacher
You may download the YouTube video “Piliin Mo Ang
Pilipinas feat. El Gamma Penumbra” by Choose Philippines to
show the different tourist spots in the country.

What’s New

Take a look at the pictures of the two families above. To which size of family
do you belong? Does your family engage in business, too? What common things do
you love to do with your family?
Read the next selection and find out how the two families share some
similarities and differences.

Parcon Family and Blanca Family

Along the road of Barangay San Jose, Arevalo, resides two families who have
been neighbors since 2000.

Both families own a 300 square meter lot for their homes.

Parcon family is a small family with four members. In their backyard, they
grow vegetables and fruits that they sell for a living. Their family has a fruit and
vegetable stand at the market. Many people buy their products because they are
freshly- picked from their garden.

10
Blanca family, on the other hand, is a big family with five members. This
family repairs shoes for a living. Mr. Blanca has a mobile cart containing his tools
used for shoe repair. He brings this wherever he finds an accessible place for
people to come, usually at the plaza.

Both families are admired by their community for having hardworking family
members, for establishing a harmonious relationship with each other and for being
successful in their small-time business endeavors.

What is It

Let us go over the following questions:

1. Where do the two families live?

2. How long have they been neighbors?

3. Where does Parcon Family grow their vegetables and fruit trees? Where do
they sell them?

4. Where does Mr. Blanca usually stop and place his mobile shoe cart to
attract customers?

The questions above are asking for names of places. The answers are
the following;
1. The two families live at Barangay San Jose, Arevalo.

2. They have been neighbors since 2000.

3. Parcon Family grows vegetables and fruits in their backyard. They sell
their products at the market.

4. Mr. Blanca usually places his mobile shoe cart at the plaza where many
people come over.

The words Barangay San Jose, Arevalo, since 2000, backyard, market, and
plaza are specific and common names of places. They tell when and where an
action happens or takes place. They name a setting of events.

Barangay San Jose, Arevalo is an urban area because of the presence of

plaza and market. An urban area like that of rural, has also available spaces for
backyard gardening.

In what ways do Parcon Family and Blanca Family similar with each other?
In what ways do they differ?

Parcon Family and Blanca Family were neighbors. They both live in the same
barangay. They own the same lot size. They are into business. They have
hardworking family members. They have good relationship with each other. These
show their similarities as families.

11
However, Parcon Family is a small family compared to Blanca Family. They
have different sources of living. Parcon Family is into selling vegetables and fruits
while Blanca Family is into repairing shoes. These show their differences.

In addition, both families may be considered affluent but not poor ones.
They have a source of living that can provide their needs though it might not be
enough to provide their wants.

12
What I Have Learned

A setting is an important part of a story. It tells where and when a story

specifically happens. Without it, a reader becomes clueless about the background
where the story takes place.
A setting may vary within a story. It changes from time to time as needed in
the plot. The setting includes geographical location such as beach or mountains,
the climate and weather, and the social or cultural aspects such as a school,
theatre, meeting, club, or anywhere that an action can and may happen.

A setting may be in an urban or rural area and may depict an affluent or

poor economic status.
Print materials include anything we see in writing, like poems and letters.

Non-print materials use photos, graphics, or other images to

communicate ideas.

Digital materials are those that can be accessed by computers. Some are
“born- digital” or originated in a digital form.
In analyzing the setting used in print, non-print and digital materials, it is
important to note the names of places mentioned and to consider how they are
described within the text. It should be understood that places cover a lot of areas,
such as certain building, a room in a building, a country, city, beach, in a mode of
transport such as a car, bus, boat, indoors or out.

Prior knowledge on where certain actions are done is also important.

Compare and contrast are skills acquired to show similarities and
differences of at least two different things. We compare similar things by showing
what is common between them. We contrast to show how they differ from
each other.

The use of Venn Diagram is an effective graphic organizer to show similar

and different relationships.

13
What I Can Do

Exploring the Skills

Read the selection and pick out the different names of places mentioned.

Bucket List
Many people are into bucket list nowadays. This contains a personalize list
of places one dreams to visit in the future. Do you already have the places in your
bucket list?
Philippines alone has many ideal places to visit and to include in the bucket
list such as Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao, Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and Mayon
Volcano in Legazpi City.
The majestic Batanes is also an inviting site to see, though its air fare is very
costly. Cebu’s historical and religious places have gathered thousands of devotees
in no particular season. Baguio’s weather is truly a tourist attraction during
summer just like Tagaytay.

For beach lovers, Palawan is a place to go to aside from Boracay which is

most famous among foreign visitors. Siargao is a must-visit destination for
surfing enthusiasts.

16
What’s New

Read the story entitled “The Giving Tree” and find out the good qualities of
the tree that you will love most.

The Giving Tree

by: Shel Silverstein
Once there was a tree and she loved a little boy. And everyday the boy would
come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of
the forest.
He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and when he was
tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree… very much. And the
tree was happy.
But time went by, and the boy grew older. And the tree was left alone.
Then one day, the boy came to the tree and the tree said, “Come Boy, come
and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my
shade and be happy”.
“I am too big to climb and play”, said the boy. “I want to buy things and have
fun. I want some money. Can you give me money?”
“I am sorry,” said the tree, “but I have no money. I have only leaves and
apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in city. Then you will have money and
you’ll be happy.”
And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried
them away. And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time… And the tree was sad.
And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy, and she
said, “Come, Boy come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and
eat apples and play in my shade and be happy”.

17
“I am too busy to climb trees”, said the boy. “I want a house to keep me
warm. I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me
a house?”
“I have no house. The forest is my house”, said the tree, “but you can cut off
my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy”.
And so the boy cut off her branches and build a house. And the tree
was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time and the tree was sad. And when he
came back, the tree was so happy, she could hardly speak.
“Come Boy, she whispered. “Come and play”.
“I am too old and sad to play. I want a boat that will take me away from
here. Can you give me a boat?”
“Cut down my trunk and make a boat”, said the tree. “Then you can sail
away and be happy”.

And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And
the tree was happy… But not really… And after a long time the boy came
back again.

“I am sorry, Boy, but I have nothing left to give you. My apples are gone”.

“My teeth are too weak for apples”, said the boy.
“My branches are gone. You cannot swing on them.”

“I am too old to swing on branches,” replied the boy.

“My trunk is gone. You cannot climb me.”

“I am too tired to climb”, said the boy.

“I am sorry. I wish that I could give

you something but I have nothing left. I am
just an old stump. I am sorry…”

“I don’t need very much now, just a

quiet place to sit and rest, I am very tired”,
sighed the boy.

“Well”, said the tree, straightening

herself up as much as she could, “an old
stump is good for sitting and resting.
Come, Boy, sit down and rest”.

And the tree was happy.

4. What characteristic of the tree do you like most?
_________________________________________________________________________
5. Do you know someone who is like the tree? Tell the qualities that
he/she possesses.
_________________________________________________________________________
For question number 1, the boy loved to do the following things with the tree.

climb up the trunk

swing from the branches
gather leaves, make them into crown
play king of the forest
sleep under the shade

For question number 2, the boy asked the following from the tree.

money
house
boat
quiet place to sit and rest

For question number 3, the tree feels HAPPY when she sees the boy, and she
is SAD when the boy stays away for a long time.

19
For question number 4, the tree is KIND, GENEROUS, GIVING,
and SELFLESS.

kind
generous
giving
selfless

For question number 5, the tree may be compared to your parents,

guardian, and even friends.

parents
tree guardian
friends

What is It

Compare and contrast is a rhetorical style that discusses the similarities

and differences of two or more things: ideas, concepts, items, and places.

A compare and contrast essay does two things: it discusses the similarities
and differences of at least two different things.

A Venn Diagram may be used to show similarities and differences.

In the story above, we can compare the qualities of the tree to our parents,
guardian or friends.

kind parents
generous
tree guardian
giving
selfless friends

The tree was kind, generous, giving, and selfless. She gave the things the boy
asked from her even if she was left with nothing.

20
Our parents, guardians, and even friends can be compared to the tree. They
are kind for giving things we need whether we ask or not; generous for providing
more than what we ask for; giving for saying “Yes” every time we ask for something;
and selfless for thinking of us even if they have nothing left.

A Venn diagram is a visual tool used to compare and contrast two or more
objects, events, people, or concepts. It is often used in language arts and math
classes to organize differences and similarities. This simple graphic makes it easier
for learners to understand how two things are both different and alike at the
same time.
In the story, the Venn Diagram is used to compare the characteristics
between the tree and the people.

What I Have Learned

Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast

discusses elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then,
analyzes two subjects by comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

In comparing and contrasting content of materials viewed with that of other

sources of information, we could consider its use, theme, setting, and
characters involved.

21
Venn diagram is a graphic organizer that can best represent the similarities
and differences of objects compared and contrasted.

Sources of information may come from printed materials like newspapers,

encyclopedia, almanac, dictionary, atlas, storybooks, etc. They may also come from
online sources like Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, and YouTube. While broadcast
sources are those taken from radio and television.
