7
What’s New

Industry Defined
Industry is a remarkable value of having or showing diligence and steady
effort to accomplish one’s work.

One needs to constantly perform his/her roles without any second thought.
The prompt action in doing one’s tasks will contribute to the success of any
undertaking. Take a look on this!

YORME
Francisco "Isko" Moreno Domagoso

At age 10, he found alternative sources of income by pushing a cart and going
house-to-house to gather old newspapers and used bottles, then reselling them
to a local junk dealer. He also rummaged through restaurant garbage bins
for leftover food, which his mother would recook for dinner.

Is he worthy to be your role model? He is an epitome of “from rags to

riches” Filipino icon. His exceptional industry made him a successful matinee idol
and talented artist in Philippine showbiz and 27th Honorable Mayor of Manila.
That’s amazing! Indeed, it pays to be industrious. What does the visual medium try
to tell you? It shows the value of diligence in one’s work, patience, humility and
many more. A careful analysis of the visual media will help you point out the
values.

Activity 1: Identify the values shown in the visual media.

Visual Media Values

8
What Is It
In identifying values in a visual medium, you should have sharp observation
to see all the details. You need to detect the devices used in presenting the visual
media. One of the devices used is the bias. It is a tendency to favour one side over
the other. Here are the most common forms of bias used:

1. Omission- Certain information is taken out while other details are included.
Doing this will affect how the audience view the message. Not including the
actual number of NCOV positive patients can change how
information is interpreted.

2. Placement – What are presented first are viewed the most important, those
that are placed last are seen to be quite less important.

3. Photos- the presentation of the images can either be pleasant or

unflattering. The kind of picture shown affects our view about them.

4. Names and Titles – The way the person or scene is described in the text or
caption in the visual media can influence the viewer.

5. Statistics– Numbers can be manipulated to create an impression. Example:

Showing “He donated below P 5, 100” creates a negative impact while “He
donated more than P 5, 000” portrays a better impression.

Source: http://www.carlisleschools.org/webpages/doulgerisk/files/bias-in-the-news.pptx

On the other hand, a propaganda is a persuasive information that is spread

for the purpose of promoting a position or cause. These are the different
techniques of propaganda:

1. Bandwagon – Listeners are persuaded into having or doing something to

follow the majority. Example: The advertisement says 90% of the dentists
recommend the toothpaste.

2. Loaded Words – Using strong words that convey strong emotions. Example:
The use of word influential or effective instead of the word good.

9
3. Testimonials – Experts or celebrities are used to do persuasion. Example: A
celebrity endorses a soap product.

4. Name Calling – Saying bad name about an opponent. Example: A driver is

called wolf by an opponent.

5. Plain Folk – A person projecting to be an average or ordinary person.

Example: A politician seeking for a position eats with the poor people.

Activity 3. Distinguishing Text Types According to Purpose and Language
Features: Recount

Pre-Reading
Recount

As you have known in the previous lesson, there are different text types that
correspond with their purpose. Do you remember any of them? Great! For a factual
recount, it restates a series of events that happened in the past. As for its language
features, a factual recount includes the following elements: 1) setting (when and
where the situation happened), 2) the sequence of events in the order in which they
occurred, and 3) an optional comment.

While-Reading

Your community’s success will be measured by the success of its members,

including you. What do you consider as the elements of success? Find out in the
following selection.
From Broke To Billionaire: Success Stories
of Self-Made Filipino Entrepreneurs
Mangali, Cloey March 9, 2020

The wealthiest tycoons in the Philippines are no strangers to early struggles in

life. Filipinos, after all, are known to be hardworking and resilient, and withstand the
challenges and daily battles of life by going above and beyond to fight poverty and
for survival.

So goes an old saying, “A journey to a thousand miles begins with a single

step” by famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. In the case of the world’s richest
tycoons, a single step led to their multimillion-peso net profit.

Here are three (3) of the successful Filipino entrepreneurs who achieved their
goals and aspirations in life. Find out what made them succeed.

(1) Alfredo M. Yao, Zest-O

Born to a sidewalk vendor and a brother to five siblings, Alfredo Yao saw the
value of hustling at an early age.

Yao’s parents sold just about anything a sidewalk vendor could sell to
survive poverty. Due to his father’s early demise, he was forced to do odd jobs at
the age of 12 to help feed their family.

11
Through the help of his relatives, he was able to finish elementary and high
school. However, even as a working student, he was unable to finance and finish
his college degree. Despite the hardships, the young Alfredo did not stop reaching
for his dreams.

With lots of valuable experiences in the printing industry, he was able to

establish his own printing business and later-on discovered the potential use of
“doy” packs or flexible foil packs as a promising technology to juice packaging and
tried to promote it to local juice companies but nobody accepted it.

This led him into venturing and making his own juice manufacturing
business launching it as Zest-O juice drink and the rest was history.

His strategy: Nothing is impossible. With hard work, faith, and

perseverance, you can do anything and everything. All it takes is your pure guts to
achieve glory.

(2) Tony Tan Caktiong, Jollibee

To be a billionaire is everybody’s dream, just like that of this young lad, born
the son of a cook for a Buddhist temple, now in the leaderboard for success.

Tony Tan Caktiong as a young boy started as a helper in their family

business. He grew up cleaning tables, washing the dishes, and serving the
customers. Because of his family and his own perseverance as well, he was able to
earn a degree in BS Chemical Engineering from the University of Sto. Tomas.

He ventured into the restaurant business following the path of his father and
franchised the then famous Magnolia Ice Cream House from the money he
borrowed from his family’s savings. Soon enough, he expanded his ice cream parlor
and offered chicken and burgers on his menu. Soon it was his burgers that outsold
the ice cream products.

Tony and his siblings immediately decided to transform their ice cream
parlors to burger restaurants, which they named Jollibee. Today, Jollibee Foods
Corporation is one of the leading restaurant brands not only in the country but
also all over the world.

His strategy: Nothing is impossible if you believe. Just like going against the giants
in the business, with close attention to what your customers demand from you,
and if you have the right attitude toward managing the risk and its rewards, you
too can make it big in the saturated industry where you’re in.

(3) Edgar “Injap” Sia, Mang Inasal

A true-blue provincial guy, Edgar “Injap” Sia started his fast-food chain
Mang Inasal from scratch in 2003.

12
From its humble beginnings with a sole branch in Iloilo City to more than
300 branches nationwide today, he was able to sell its full operations to Jollibee
Foods Corporation for a total of P5 billion.

With a clear vision, he decided to embark on a new journey capitalizing at

the property business sector with his siblings and Tony Tan Caktiong, the man
behind JFC. Their partnership was able to accumulate a total of one million square
meters of leasable space now known as Double Dragon.

His may not be your typical rags-to-riches story but his meek and modest
start at the province, to now competing with the giants in the industry, his story
remains as an inspiration to all the probinsiyano entrepreneurs in the Philippines.

His strategy: Be persuasive and have the foresight to build a business on your
own. Never forget to look back to your humble beginnings because your first step in
real life will also be your last step to success.
Source: https://www.ecomparemo.com/info/broke-to-billionaire-filipino-entrepreneurs/

There are a lot of Filipino entrepreneurs who became successful because of

their industry, hard work, faith in God, good attitude towards work, self-
confidence, talent and skill, perseverance and a vast of reasons behind. What
matters most is that they believe in their dreams and pursue them with the
guidance and help from people around them.

Others may say that only exceptionally talented people can achieve their
dreams. However, the success stories of the persons described above prove that
nothing is impossible if we value industry. Only those who work hard can achieve
more. For instance, how can you be a productive member of your family and
community if you do not participate in accomplishing simple household chores and
extend extra effort in helping your parents, your peers and your local leaders?

Simple things you do can help improve your home, surroundings and
community. You will also learn many things and appreciate the value of industry
when you are productive. You will serve as model to your siblings, peers and
friends. Moreover, your parents will surely be very proud of you and be happy of
your accomplishments and improvements. Your life will become meaningful and
you develop positive traits which will shape and hone you to become a better
version of yourself.

Making Requests

No man is an island. People need one another for varied reasons. Can you
think of situations when people rely on others? You are definitely right! Even from
the seemingly simple task of a tricycle driver to that of the traffic enforcers who
ensure the safety of the roads, everybody has a role to play in the progress of a
community.

In dealing with people in the community, you have learned that showing
sympathy, empathy and understanding to others matter. Proper communication is
necessary in all circumstances whether in expressing one’s thoughts
or ideas or making requests.

Making a request involves asking someone to do something for you. Here are
the most common ways for making requests:

1. “Can I use your cellphone, please?”

2. “Could I borrow your book?”
3. “Do you mind if I use your umbrella?”
4. “Would you mind if I turned off the fan?”

In using these expressions, keep in mind these points. Could is more polite
that can. “Do you mind if…” is always followed by the verb in the present tense,

14
but “Would you mind if…” is followed by the verb in the past tense. When you’re
using these two sentences, don’t use please. It’s already polite enough!

The following English dialogues show you ways to accept or reject requests:

Request Response

“Can I help you?” “Yes please. I’d like to know

what time the bus leaves.”

“Can I help you?” “No thanks, I’m just looking.”

“Shall I open the window for you?” “Yes please. That would be very
kind
of you.”

“Would you like another coffee?” “No thanks.” Or, “No thank you.”

“Would you like another coffee?” “Yes please, that would be lovely.”
or, “Yes please, I’d love one.”

“Would you like me to answer the phone?” “If you wouldn’t mind.”
or, “If you could.”

“I’ll do the photocopying, if you like.” “It’s OK, I can do it.”

or, “Don’t worry, I’ll do it.
or, “Thank you, that would be
great.”

Activity 4. SRA (Situation, Request, Answer)

Revise Writing for Clarity

Do you remember the process involved in writing? Great! Writing consists of

generating ideas, drafting and revising. In revising, the writer checks, adds, deletes,
changes the words, sentences and other information created in the drafting
process. Revising is done to improve the quality of the draft.

As you revise, think of your readers. Make sure that your readers get your
message clearly. What aspects of the draft are reviewed in the revising stage?
Generally, revising is rethinking everything and considering the clarity of your
message through the following:

1. Accuracy of your main points – Are your main points true?

2. Conciseness of your work – Do you have too much or too little information?
3. Connection from one idea to another through transition or signal words – Do
you make use of appropriate transition? (Examples: however, moreover,
second)
4. Correctness of your spelling capitalization – Are you able to spell the words
correctly? (Examples: there or their, principal or principle)
5. Appropriateness of the punctuations used – o you have proper use of
punctuations?

Activity 5. Revise for Clarity

Rewrite the following draft in consideration of the above guidelines. Use a

The Fruits of Hard Work

Hard work is a great qualities. All work are noble. Work is worship. Hard
work is the keys to successful. We can progress by doing hard work. Those
countries whose citizens are hard-working make great progress.

An idle industrious person depends too much on chance. He think that

some miracle will happen and he will become rich and prosperous? But this is not
impossible without hard work.

16
All great men of the worlds were very hard-working persons. By hard work
man progresses and the country progresses. Seventy years ago, Japan was a
backward country. Today, Japan is one of the most prosperous country of the
world. This prosperity has been impossible by means of hard work. We should all
therefore, work hard to achieve successful.
