Let us learn
Signal Words
is a word or phrase that gives an
idea about what we might expect to
come next. It alerts the readers
about the statements that follow a
sequence.
The words first, second, next, then, and
lastly or finally are used to follow the
directions in their correct order. These
are the words that signal what is the
next to follow. Directions may be given
in doing something, how to do simple
instructions or activities, and how to
use things or objects.

Here is another example of text for
you to be able to understand how
signal words are very important in
giving directions. Take note of the
underlined words

The Girl Scouts had a camping at the beach for two days.
When they went home, some of them had sunburn. The Troop
Leader brought them to the school clinic. The doctor gave them an
ointment in a tube and said: “There are few things to remember
when using this ointment. First, use this ointment only for your
skin. Next, spread it thinly over the burnt area twice a day. Then, if
a burning sensation or itchiness occurs, discontinue using it and
see the doctor again. Lastly, keep it tightly closed and store in a
cool and dry place.” (Grade 4 Learner’s Material).
Study the following sentences on the steps in cooking rice:

1. You will need two cups

of rice and two cups of
water.
2. Clean the rice by
removing stones and
unhusked palay.
3. Put the rice in a pot.
4. Wash the rice once or
twice without rubbing the
grains.
5. Add 2 cups of water.
6. Cover the pot and
place over the fire until
rice boils.
7. Lessen heat and let it
simmer until rice is
cooked
Let’s rewrite the sentences in
paragraph form using signal words.

First, prepare two cups of rice and two cups of water.

Next, clean the rice by removing the stones and
unhusked palay. Then, put the rice in a pot and wash
once or twice without rubbing the grains. Lastly, add two
cups of water, cover the pot, and place over the fire until
it boils. Lessen heat and let it simmer until it is cooked.
The numbered steps in cooking rice are written in
paragraph form. Connectives are used to make the
directions clearer. These directions are guides in giving
directions or stating steps to follow. Once followed
properly, implementing the instructions would be easier.
The connectives first, second, next, then, finally or lastly
are used to signal the sequence/order in giving
directions. These are also called sequence words.
Let us try

Directions: Study the pictures and fill in the

blanks with the correct words and appropriate
