Let’s Learn
Verbs are action words. Verbs change in form,
or tense.
The simple present tense is used to talk about
an action which is happening now or something
which happens on a regular basis. We use the
present simple tense to talk about daily routines
and activities, habits, unchanging situations,
general truths and fixed arrangements.
The main characteristic of simple present
tense is using the base form of the verb for
plural. For the 3rd singular person – he, she, it
– add the ‘-s’ or ‘-es’.
General Rule in forming singular verbs

>To most verbs, add -s at the base form: come (comes), start
(starts), buy (buys)

>For verbs ending in consonant +y, just substitute –y to –ies:

try (tries), fly (flies), cry (cries

>For verbs ending in s, z, ch, sh, and x, add “-es” in

the base form: hizz (hizzes), miss (misses), brush
(brushes), fix (fixes), catch (catches)
General Rule in forming singular verbs

>Except do and go, where in you add “-es” at the end like goes
and does
Subject – Verb Agreement

If a subject is singular, its verb must also be

singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be
plural. In present tenses, nouns and verbs form
plurals in opposite ways: nouns ADD an s to the
singular form,
Subject – Verb Agreement
BUT verbs REMOVE an s from the singular form.
We use the “s” form of the verb with singular subjects.

A subject is singular when there is only one subject.

Examples:
Mama Annie cuddles her baby with much love and care.
Jovie loves reading fairy tales.
Subject – Verb Agreement
We use the base form of the verb with plural subjects.
A subject is plural if it is more than one.

Examples:
Jean and Jan go to school together everyday.
They play basketball every afternoon.
Use of the Simple Present of to be
The principal use of the simple present is to refer to an action
or event that takes place habitually, but with the verb "to be"
the simple present tense also refers to a present or general
state of being, whether temporary, permanent or habitual.
I am happy.
Crystel is helpful.
Children are playful.
Use of the Simple Present of to be

The verb to be in the simple present can be used to refer to

something that is true at the present moment as in the
following example.

• Lorna is 9 years old.

• She is a Grade 4 pupil at Laoag Elementary School.
Remember:
I, you, he, she, it, you, and they are subject pronouns (also
called personal pronouns, a term used to include both subject
am, are, is are forms of the verb to be in the simple present.
The subject pronouns go with particular be verbs such as
the following:
I am (I’m) We are (We’re)
You are (You’re) You are (You’re)
He/She/It is They are (They’re)

For action words, add “-s or -es” to the main verb
when the subject is singular. It is also called the “s
form” of the verb
Example: The teacher reads a lot.
Singular Subject – Singular Verb
The teacher read + s a lot.
You have learned
The verb remains in its base form or simple form when the
subject is plural. No” s” or “es” is added to it.
Example: Teachers read a lot.
Plural Subject – Plural Verb
Teachers read a lot.
The be verbs (am, is, are) are used to indicate the simple
present tense to show state of being, or an action which is
