PROBLEM SET 1

1. A vessel is to be filled with glycerol:oil:water mixture (prepared by mixing the ingredients

in equal weight). Technician is worried about the vessel bottom as it may tolerate maximum
140 kPa gauge pressure. Assume these three liquids are totally immiscible in each other
and the height of the vessel is 4.48 m. (ρoil =917 kg/m3 ; ρwater=1000 kg/m3 ; ρglycerol=1261
kg/m3)
a. Find out if this transfer is feasible or not.
b. What would be the height between upper water level and bottom of the vessel when
the system reached equilibrium.

2. Consider a water tank system with

dimensions given in the figure. A 10
cm (ID) pipe fills the tank with a
velocity of 8 m/s and the water leaves
the tank with a velocity of 3 m/s
through another 5cm (ID) pipe from the
bottom. If water level in the tank is 3.6
m at t=0, how much time (h) does it
take to overflow?

3. A differential manometer shown in

the figure is used to measure the
pressure difference due to water flow
inside an inclined pipe. If specific
gravity of mercury is 13.5, what is the
pressure difference between point A
and B in kPa?
PS. Water fills the empty spaces in
the manometer

4. Two water tanks are connected to each other through a mercury monometer with inclined tubes.
Specific gravity of mercury is 13.6 and the pressure difference between two tanks is 15 kPa. Find
h and θ.

5. A double-fluid manometer measures the

pressure difference between an oil pipe and
water pipe. Calculate the pressure difference
between water and oil.

6. The velocity distribution of apple juice over a fixed plate is given by v=0,677x-x2 in which v is
the velocity in m/s at distance x meters above the plate. If the viscosity of apple juice is 0.03 Pa.s,
determine the shear stress

a. At the plate surface

b. At x=0.24m

7. The distance between the two parallel plates is 0.00914 m and the lower plate is being pulled at
a relative velocity of 0.366 m/s greater than the top plate. The fluid is used is soybean oil with
viscosity of 4 x 10-2 Pa.s at 303 K.

a. Calculate the shear stress τ and the shear rate.

b. If glycerol at 293 K having a viscosity of 1.069 kg/m.s is used instead of soybean oil, what
relative velocity is needed using the same distance between plates so that the same shear
stress is obtained as in part a? Also, what is the new shear rate?
