Accessory Drive Housing And Shaft


SMCS - 1207-11; 1207-12; 1229

Remove Accessory Drive Housing And Shaft

start by:

a) remove timing gear cover

b) remove fuel injection pump housing and governor

1. Remove all lines (1) from accessory drive housing and fuel filter base.

2. Remove the nut and washer from the accessory drive shaft.

3. Use tooling (A) to remove the gear from the accessory drive shaft. Remove the sleeve from the shaft.

Hold the puller with hand to prevent injury when gear is removed from
shaft.

4. Remove bolts (2), washers, and retainer (3) that hold the accessory drive housing to the plate.

5. Remove accessory drive housing.

6. Remove fuel transfer pump.

7. Remove the accessory drive shaft from the housing.

8. Use tool (B) to remove bearing (4) from shaft.

Install Accessory Drive Housing And Shaft

1. Heat the bearing for the accessory drive shaft to 300°F (149°C) in oil. Install the bearing on the shaft.

2. Install the accessory drive shaft (1) and bearing in the housing.

3. Install the fuel transfer pump.

4. Install accessory drive housing (2).

5. Install the retainer and the four bolts and washers that hold the accessory drive housing in position.

TYPICAL EXAMPLE

6. Turn the accessory drive shaft until tool (A) can be installed.

7. Install the sleeve, gear, washer and nut on the shaft of the accessory drive.

8. Tighten the nut (3) to a torque of 100 ± 10 lb.ft. (13.8 ± 1.4 mkg).

9. Install all lines on accessory drive housing.

10. Install lines on fuel filter base and accessory drive housing.

Air Cleaner Housing

Remove Air Cleaner Housing


start by:

a) remove muffler

b) remove hood

1. Remove cup assembly (2).

2. Remove primary element (1).

3. Remove bolts (3).

4. Remove nuts (4) and washers from the inside of the air cleaner housing.

5. Remove air cleaner housing.

Install Air Cleaner Housing

1. Put the air cleaner housing (1) in position on pipe assembly.

2. Install washers and nuts.

3. Install primary element.

4. Install the two bolts.

5. Install the cup assembly.

Alternator
SMCS - 1405-11; 1405-12

Remove Alternator
1. Remove engine enclosures (if so equipped).

2. Loosen bolt (1). Remove alternator drive belts from alternator pulley.

3. Remove the wires from the alternator.

4. Remove the bolts that hold the alternator in position. Remove the alternator (2).

Install Alternator
1. Put the alternator in position on the engine. Install the bolts that hold the alternator in position.

2. Put the alternator drive belts in position on the pulley and make an adjustment to the belt tension. See
LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE.

3. Install the wires on the alternator.

4. Install engine enclosures (if so equipped).

Camshaft Bearings

Remove Camshaft Bearings

start by:

a) remove engine

b) remove flywheel housing

c) remove camshaft

1. Remove the camshaft bearings starting with the front bearing with tool group (A).

Install Camshaft Bearings

TYPICAL EXAMPLE

1. Install the camshaft bearings in the cylinder block starting with the front bearing. Install bearings with tool
group (A). Install the bearings with the oil hole in alignment with the oil hole in the cylinder block.

2. The front and rear bearings after installation are to be .06 in. (1.5 mm) inside the ends of the cylinder
block.

Camshaft
SMCS - 1210-11; 1210-12

Remove Camshaft
start by:

a) remove valve lifters

b) remove timing gear cover

1. Turn the crankshaft until the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear (1) is in alignment with "C" mark on
camshaft gear (3).

2. Put a mark on the teeth of the accessory drive gear and idler gear at location (A). Put a mark on the teeth of
idler gear and camshaft gear at location (B). The timing of the fuel injection pump will be correct if the gear
teeth are marked.

3. Remove camshaft bolts (2), lock and washer.

4. Pull the camshaft out of the cylinder block.

5. Remove bolts and lock from camshaft gear. Remove gear from camshaft.

Install Camshaft
1. Put gear in position on camshaft and install lock and bolts.

2. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on cams and bearing journals of the camshaft.

3. Install the camshaft (1) in the block with timing marks on accessory drive gear, idler gear, camshaft gear,
and crankshaft gear in alignment.

4. Put the washer in position and install bolts and locks.

NOTE: If a replacement has been installed for any of the four above timing gears, it will be necessary to put
the shaft of accessory drive in time. See REMOVE AND INSTALL FUEL INJECTION PUMP HOUSING
AND GOVERNOR AS A UNIT.

Connecting Rod Bearings


SMCS - 1219-10

Remove And Install Connecting Rod Bearings

start by:

a) remove oil pump

b) remove oil pan plate

1. Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at bottom center. Remove the connecting rod caps (1) from these
connecting rods. Remove the lower half of bearings from the caps.

2. Push the connecting rods away from the crankshaft, and remove upper half of bearings.

3. At installation, clean the surfaces where the bearings fit, and install upper half of new bearings in the rods.
Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearings and crankshaft journals. Put the connecting rods in position on
the crankshaft.

4. Clean the surfaces where the bearings fit and install lower half of new bearings in caps. Put clean SAE 30
engine oil on the bearings. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the threads of all bolts.

5. Check the bearing clearance with wire (A). Put the caps (1) in position on the connecting rods and install
nuts on the bolts. Turn both nuts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on the nut and on the
end of each bolt, and turn both nuts 90° more.

6. Remove the rod cap, and measure thickness of wire. Rod bearing clearance with new bearings must be
.0020 to .0076 in. (0.050 to 0.193 mm). Maximum permissible clearance with used bearings is .010 in. (0.25
mm).

7. Put the caps in position on the connecting rods and install nuts on the bolts. Turn both nuts to a torque of
30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on the nut and on the end of each bolt, and turn both nuts 90° more.

NOTICE

When installing connecting rod cap, be sure that the number on side of
cap is near to and respective to the number on side of connecting rod.

8. Do Steps 1 through 6 again for other connecting rod bearings.

Counterweight
SMCS - 1007-11; 1007-12

Remove Counterweight (if so equipped)

1. Put a power truck in position under the counterweight (1) as shown.

2. Remove the bolts (2) that hold the counterweight to the machine.

3. Remove the counterweight from the machine. Weight is 2160 lb. (982 kg).

Install Counterweight (if so equipped)

1. Use a power truck to put the counterweight (1) in position on the machine.

2. Install the bolts that hold the counterweight to the machine and tighten to 200 ± 25 lb.ft. (27.7 ± 3.5 mkg).

Crankcase Guard
SMCS - 7151-12; 7151-11

Remove Crankcase Guard

1. Put a floor jack (3) in position under the crankcase guard (1).

2. Remove the bolts (2) that hold guard to frame.

3. Lower jack and remove the guard from the machine. Weight of guard is 220 lb. (100 kg).

Install Crankcase Guard

1. Put the crankcase guard (1) in position under the machine using a floor jack (2).

2. Lift the guard until it is in position on the frame.

3. Install the bolts that hold guard to frame.

4. Remove floor jack.

Crankshaft Front Seal


SMCS - 1160-11; 1160-12

Remove Crankshaft Front Seal

start by:

a) remove vibration damper and pulley

1. Use tool group (A) to remove crankshaft front seal.

Install Crankshaft Front Seal

1. Install crankshaft front seal with tooling (A) as follows:

a) Put clean engine oil on the lip of seal and on the outside diameter of the crankshaft.

b) Put 8M8059 Loctite Sealant on the outside diameter of the seal.

c) Put the seal in position on the crankshaft with the lip of the seal toward the oil being sealed.

d) Put the seal installer ring (1) and push plate (2) in position on crankshaft.

e) Install the bolt (3) and washer (4).

f) Tighten bolt (3) until plate (2) makes contact with end of crankshaft.

g) Remove tooling (A).

Crankshaft Main Bearings


SMCS - 1203-10

Remove And Install Crankshaft Main Bearings

start by:

a) remove oil pump

b) remove oil pan plate

1. Remove the No. 2 and No. 6 main bearing caps (1) for the crankshaft.

2. Use tool (A) to remove upper halves of main bearings by turning the crankshaft and moving the bearing
out of the block. Remove lower halves (2) of main bearings from caps.

3. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on upper halves of main bearings. Put upper halves of main bearings into
place with tool (A).

4. Clean the main bearing caps, and install lower halves of bearings in caps.

5. Check the bearing clearance using wire (B). Install caps and tighten bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ±
0.4 mkg). Put a mark on both bolt heads and bearing caps, then turn each bolt 90° more. Remove bearing
caps, and measure thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance with new bearings must be .0030 to .0059 in.
(0.076 to 0.150 mm). Maximum permissible clearance with used bearings is .010 in. (0.25 mm).

6. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on threads of cap bolts, face of washers, and lower halves of main bearings.
Put the caps (1) in position on engine with number on cap in direction of respective number on face on left
side of cylinder block. Install bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4
mkg). Put a mark on both bolt heads and bearing caps, then turn both bolts 90° more.

7. Remove the No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 main bearing caps. Remove the crankshaft thrust bearings. Put clean SAE
30 engine oil on the new thrust bearings and install them in cylinder block with groove in bearing against
crankshaft.

8. Do Steps 2 through 6 for remainder of bearings. Check crankshaft end play with indicator group (C). End
play with new bearings must be .0025 to .0145 in. (0.064 to 0.368 mm). Maximum permissible end play with
used bearings is .025 in. (0.64 mm).

Crankshaft Rear Seal

Remove Crankshaft Rear Seal

start by:

a) remove flywheel

1. Remove bolts (1) from gear.

2. Remove gear (2) and shaft.

3. Use tool (A) to remove seal (3) from crankshaft.

Install Crankshaft Rear Seal

1. Use tooling (A) to install the crankshaft rear seal as follows:

a) Install locator (3) and screws (2) on the crankshaft.

b) Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on lip of seal and seal pilot (1). Put the seal on the seal pilot (1) with
the lip of the seal toward the engine block.

c) Put 8M8059 Loctite Sealant on the outside diameter of the seal. Slide the seal pilot (1) on the locator
assembly (3) and crankshaft.

d) Put the seal installer ring (6) on the pusher plate (5), and slide the pusher plate on the stud of the

locator assembly (3).

e) Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on nut (4). Install the nut on the stud of the locator assembly (3).

f) Tighten nut (4) until the seal makes contact with the bottom.

g) Remove tooling (A).

2. Install gear (7) and shaft (8).

3. Install the three bolts that hold the gear and shaft in position.

Crankshaft
SMCS - 1202-11; 1202-12

Remove Crankshaft
start by:

a) remove flywheel housing

b) remove timing gear cover

c) remove pistons

1. Turn the crankshaft until the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear (1) is in alignment with the "C" mark on the
camshaft gear (2).

2. Put a mark on the teeth of the accessory drive shaft gear and idler gear at location (A). Put a mark on the
teeth of the idler gear and camshaft gear at location (B). This will make correct timing for the camshaft of the
fuel injection pump.

3. Fasten a hoist to the crankshaft.

4. Remove the caps for the crankshaft main bearing.

5. Remove the crankshaft. Weight of the crankshaft is 200 lb. (91 kg).

6. Remove the crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block and from main bearing caps.

Install Crankshaft

1. Clean the bearing surfaces in the cylinder block. Install the upper halves of main bearings in the block. Put
clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearings.

2. Fasten a hoist and put the crankshaft in position in the cylinder block with all the timing marks in
alignment.

3. Clean the bearing surfaces of the main bearing caps. Install lower halves of the main bearings in the caps.

4. Check the main bearing clearance with wire (A). Install the caps in their respective positions with the
number on cap in alignment with the number on the pan face on the left side of the cylinder block.

5. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearing bolt threads and the face of the washers. Install the remainder
of the bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on both
bolt heads and bearing caps. Tighten each bolt an additional 90° from mark. Remove bearing caps and
measure thickness of wire (A). Main bearing clearance must be .0030 - .0059 in. (0.76 - 0.150 mm).
Maximum permissible bearing clearance with used parts is .010 in. (0.25 mm).

6. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the lower halves of the main bearings. Install the main bearing caps in their
respective positions. Install bolts and washers for bearing caps. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft.
(4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on both bolt head and bearing caps. Tighten each bolt an additional 90° from
mark.

7. Check the crankshaft end play that is controlled by the thrust bearing (1) on the rear main bearing with tool
group (B). The end play with new bearings must be .0025 - .0145 in. (0.064 - 0.638 mm). Maximum
permissible end play with used bearings is .025 in. (0.64 mm).

NOTE: Install thrust bearing with side having the identification "blockside" toward cylinder block.

8. If the accessory drive shaft gear, idler gear, or camshaft gear has been removed or if the crankshaft gear has
been replaced, it will be necessary to put the accessory drive shaft in time after assembling the engine. See
REMOVE AND INSTALL FUEL INJECTION PUMP HOUSING AND GOVERNOR AS A UNIT.

Cylinder Head Assembly


SMCS - 1100-11; 1100-12

Remove Cylinder Head Assembly

start by:

a) remove rocker shafts and push rods

b) remove fuel injection lines

1. Remove coolant from cooling system.

2. Remove bracket (5) from cylinder head assembly.

3. Remove oil supply tube (2).

4. Disconnect oil return tube (3).

5. Remove bracket (1) from hydraulic oil tank.

6. Remove breather tube (4).

7. Loosen clamps (6). Remove elbow (7) from hose.

8. Remove two bolts (8) from water pump.

9. Remove water temperature sensing line (9).

10. Remove bolts (10) from bracket.

11. Install tool (A) on fan drive. Remove bolts (11) from fan drive. Put the fan assembly against the radiator
core.

12. Remove twenty-six bolts (12) from cylinder head assembly.

13. Install two 3/4" - 10 NC forged eyebolts in cylinder head assembly.

14. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head assembly. Weight of cylinder head assembly is 450 lb. (205 kg).

15. Remove cylinder head assembly (13).

Install Cylinder Head Assembly


1. Install a new, dry cylinder head gasket.

2. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head assembly. Weight of cylinder head assembly is 450 lb. (205 kg).

3. Put the cylinder head assembly (1) in position on the cylinder block.

4. Install the push rods and rocker shaft.

5. Put 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound on threads of cylinder head and rocker shaft bolts.

6. Install the twenty-six bolts.

7. Tighten the twenty-six bolts in the following step sequence:

a) Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 115 lb.ft. (15.9 mkg).

b) Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

c) Tighten all bolts in number sequence (hand turn only) to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

d) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 22 lb.ft. (3.0 mkg).

e) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

f) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence (hand turn only) to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

8. Put the fan assembly in position and install the four bolts (2). Remove tool (A).

9. Install bolts (6) in bracket.

10. Install water temperature sensing line (7).

11. Install two bolts (5) in water pump.

12. Connect elbow (4) to hose and tighten clamps (3).

13. Install bracket (8) on hydraulic oil tank.

14. Install bracket (12) on cylinder head assembly.

15. Connect lines (11) and (9) to turbocharger.

16. Install breather tube (10).

17. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level.

18. Make adjustments so intake valve clearance is .015 in. (0.38 mm) and exhaust valve clearance is .025 in.
(0.64 mm).

Cylinder Head

Remove Cylinder Head

start by:

a) remove water temperature regulator

b) remove exhaust manifold

c) remove rocker shaft and push rods

1. Install tool (A) as shown.

2. Remove the four bolts (1) from fan drive. Remove fan drive assembly.

3. Remove two bolts (2) from water pump.

4. Remove bolts (3) from bracket.

5. Remove bolts (4) and bracket (5) from hydraulic oil tank.

6. Remove twenty-six bolts (6) from cylinder head.

7. Install two 3/4"-10 NC forged eyebolts in cylinder head.

8. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head. Weight of the cylinder head is 210 lb. (95.25 kg).

9. Remove cylinder head (7).

NOTICE

Do not hit the hydraulic lines for the hydraulic tank when removing
the cylinder head.

Install Cylinder Head


1. Install a new, dry cylinder head gasket.

2. Put the cylinder head (1) in position on the cylinder block.

3. Install the push rods. Put the rocker shaft in position on the cylinder head.

4. Put 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of cylinder head and rocker shaft bolts.

5. Tighten the twenty-six bolts in the following step sequence:

a) Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 115 lb.ft. (15.9 mkg).

b) Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

c) Tighten all bolts in number sequence (hand turn only) to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

d) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 22 lb.ft. (3.0 mkg).

e) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

f) Tighten all bolts in letter sequence (hand turn only) to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

6. Install the bracket on the hydraulic oil tank.

7. Connect bracket of transmission oil cooler to cylinder head.

8. Install the bolts in the water pump.

9. Install fan drive assembly and remove tool (A).

10. Make adjustments so intake valve clearance is .015 in. (0.38 mm) and exhaust valve clearance is .025 in.
(0.64 mm).

a) install exhaust manifold

b) install water temperature regulator

Cylinder Liners
SMCS - 1216-12; 1216-11

Remove Cylinder Liners

start by:

a) remove pistons

1. Remove the coolant from the cylinder block.

2. Put a cover on the crankshaft journals to keep foreign material off journals.

3. Pull the cylinder liner (1) from its seat in the cylinder block with tooling (A).

4. Remove tooling (A) and remove cylinder liner.

Install Cylinder Liners

1. Clean the cylinder liners and block.

2. Install the liners in the block without the O-ring seals.

3. Install tooling (A) and two 5/8" - 11 NC bolts 4 1/2 in. long. Tighten the bolts evenly to 50 lb.ft. (6.9 mkg).

4. Check the liner projection with tool group (B) at four locations around the liner. The difference between
the four measurements must not be more than .002 in. (0.05 mm).

5. The liner projection must be .0020 to .0056 in. (0.051 to 0.142 mm). The measurement between liners next
to each other, must not be more than .002 in. (0.05 mm) difference.

NOTE: Turning the liner in the bore can make a difference in the liner projection.

6. If the liner projection is not .0020 to .0056 in. (0.051 to 0.142 mm), check the thickness of the liner flange
(1) and depth of the liner bore (2) in the block (3). The thickness of the liner flange must be .4048 ± .0008 in.
(10.282 ± 0.020 mm). The depth of the liner bore in block must be .401 ± .001 in. (10.19 ± 0.03 mm).

NOTE: If the liner bore in the block is worn and the measurement is not correct, the liner bore can be
corrected with a cylinder block counterboring tool. See SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS, FORM FM055228-01.

7. Put a mark on the liner and block so the liner can be installed in the same position from which it was
removed.

8. Remove liner and install new O-ring seals. Put liquid soap on the seals and install the liners in the cylinder
block. Push liners down with tool group (C).

1. Remove the coolant from the cooling system.

2. Remove the oil from the transmission and bevel gear case.

3. Remove the oil from the flywheel clutch.

4. Turn the fuel supply valve to the "OFF" position.

5. Remove the junction blocks (1) from each side of the machine.

6. Put a mark on the hoses, as to their position on the junction block on the right side of the machine.

7. Remove the side covers (4) from each side of the machine.

8. Remove the radiator lower and upper hoses (2) and fan guards (3).

9. Remove the six bolts that hold fan and hub to the fan drive and put the fan in the radiator guard.

10. Remove bracket (5), one on each side of the machine.

11. Remove oil lines (8) and battery cable.

12. Disconnect wires (6) from starter.

13. Remove battery cable (9) and fuel line (7).

14. Disconnect the control rods for the steering clutches from the dash and the brake pedal support.

15. Remove the oil lines (11) from the flywheel clutch.

16. Disconnect interlock control (10) and remove transmission vent line.

17. Disconnect battery ground cable (13) and flywheel clutch control rod (12).

18. Remove universal joint. See REMOVE UNIVERSAL JOINT.

19. Remove the four bolts, two on each side of machine, that hold the flywheel housing to the frame.

20. Remove two bolts (14), one on each side of machine, that hold the engine front support to the frame.

21. Install tool (A) in the hole in the front of the cylinder head.

22. Install a chain around the brackets for the dash as shown.

23. Fasten a hoist to the chain (15) and eyebolt (16). Use a spreader bar in the chain to prevent damage to the
turbocharger. Remove the engine (18), dash (17) and flywheel clutch as a unit. Weight of unit is 2900 lb.
(1338.1 kg).

Install Engine And Flywheel Clutch (Special Application & Direct


Drive)
1. Fasten a hoist to the engine. Weight of the engine is 2900 lb. (1338.1 kg).

2. Put the engine (1) in position over the tractor.

3. Put the clutch lever over the shaft. As the engine is being lowered, the key of the shaft will be in alignment
with the lever. Push the shaft into position.

4. Install the rod (2) into the lever. Install the washer, lock washer, and nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 18 ±
5 lb.ft. (2.5 ± 0.7 mkg). Lower the engine into the tractor all of the way.

NOTICE

Do not cause damage to hydraulic hose when engine is being put into
position.

5. Install the two bolts that hold the engine in position in the front.

6. Install the four bolts that hold the engine in position at the rear.

7. Install fuel line (3) and turn fuel supply valve to "ON" position.

8. Connect the hose to the hydraulic pump.

9. Install a bracket (4) to each side of the tractor.

10. Install the four hydraulic lines (6) to the transmission.

11. Install the vent tube.

12. Install universal joint. See INSTALL UNIVERSAL JOINT.

13. Connect rods (5) to steering clutch levers.

14. Connect the battery ground cable.

16. Connect the wires and battery cable to the starter.

17. Connect the upper and lower hoses to the radiator.

18. Install the fan and fan guards.

19. Install the junction boxes and the hydraulic lines.

27. Remove tube (23) from torque divider housing and bevel gear case.

28. Disconnect tube (24) from scavenge oil pump for torque divider.

29. Remove the two bolts (25) from each side of the flywheel housing.

30. Remove the two bolts (26) from the front support.

31. Install a tool (A) in both front and rear of cylinder head.

32. Fasten a hoist to the engine. Weight of engine, dash and torque divider as a unit is 3000 lb. (1360.8 kg).

33. Remove engine.

Install Engine And Torque Divider (Power Shift)

1. Install a tool (A) in both front and rear of cylinder head.

2. Fasten a hoist to the engine.

3. Put the engine in position in tractor.

4. Install the two bolts in the front support of engine.

5. Install the four bolts in the flywheel housing.

6. Connect the tube to the scavenge oil pump for the torque divider.

7. Install the tube (2) between the torque divider housing and the bevel gear case.

8. Install bracket (1) that holds hydraulic tubes in position.

9. Install the brake pedals and bracket as a unit in the tractor. Install the shims between the bracket and
fenders.

10. Install the eight bolts (3) that hold the bracket in position. Install two bolts (5) in bracket.

11. Connect two rods (4) to brake pedals.

12. Connect two rods (6) to levers.

13. Connect the two rods under the dash to the levers.

14. Install bracket (8) to hydraulic oil tank and cylinder head.

15. Connect two hoses (7) to hydraulic tank.

16. Connect the two cables to the starter.

17. Connect the fuel line to the accessory drive housing.

18. Connect rod (9) to the hydraulic control lever.

19. Install clip (10) at base of hydraulic tank.

20. Connect tube (11) to hydraulic oil pump.

21. Install clip (12) on hydraulic hoses.

22. Put the fan on the fan drive. Install the bolts that hold the fan in position.

23. Make an adjustment to the fan belt tension. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE.

24. Install hydraulic cylinder bracket (13).

25. Install elbow (14) on cylinder head. Connect the other end of the elbow to the radiator.

1. Turn the fuel supply valve to the "OFF" position.

2. Disconnect decelerator control rod (4).

3. Remove tube (1).

4. Remove breather tube (3).

5. Disconnect fuel lines (2). Put caps on all openings.

6. Remove bolts from bracket (5).

7. Remove bolts (6).

8. Loosen bolts (7) to prevent damage to seals.

9. Fasten a hoist to the fuel injection pump housing and governor. Remove the fuel injection pump housing
and governor as a unit. Weight of the unit is 50 lb. (22.6 kg).

Install Fuel Injection Pump Housing And Governor

1. Remove the crankcase breather from the valve cover.

2. Remove plug (1) from flywheel housing.

3. Turn crankshaft clockwise as seen from the rear of the machine until a 3/8"-16 NC bolt (2) 2 1/2 in. long
can be installed in the flywheel through the timing hole.

NOTE: If timing hole is turned too far, turn crankshaft 720°. Do not turn crankshaft back.

4. When No. 1 piston is at (TC) top center compression position, the intake and exhaust rocker arms of No. 1
cylinder can be moved through the breather hole in the valve cover.

5. If the rocker arm cannot be moved, remove the timing bolt and turn the crankshaft 360°. Install the timing
bolt again.

6. Install tool (A) on the rear face of the accessory drive housing. Install the tool with the dowels in the
accessory drive housing in alignment with the dowel holes in the tool.

7. Remove tool (A).

8. Fasten a hoist to the fuel injection pump housing and governor.

9. Put the fuel injection pump housing and governor in the correct position.

10. Install bolts (7) in the fuel injection pump housing.

11. Remove caps from fuel lines.

12. Install fuel lines (4).

13. Use tool (B) to tighten fuel lines to a torque of 30 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.7 mkg).

14. Install tube (3).

15. Install breather tube (5).

16. Connect decelerator control rod (6).

17. Turn fuel valve to "ON" position.

Separation Of Governor From Fuel Injection Pump Housing


start by:

a) remove fuel injection pump housing and governor as a unit

1. Remove the cover (1).

2. Remove the screw (2) for the rack stop collar.

3. Remove rack stop collar (3).

4. Remove the bolts (4) that hold the governor to the housing of injection pumps.

5. Remove the governor housing (5).

6. Remove the governor spring and seat assembly from the guide in housing (5).

7. Remove the washer type spring (6) from bolt.

8. Remove the three bolts (7) and lock that hold the cylinder and weight assemblies (8) to the housing of
injection pumps.

9. Pull the cylinder and weight assemblies straight out until they are free of dowels.

10. Slide the cylinder and weight assemblies to the side to free the piston from rack (9).

Connection Of Governor To Fuel Injection Pump Housing

1. Put the cylinder and weight assemblies (1) in position on the housing of injection pumps so the piston (2)
is in correct location on the rack (3).

2. Push the cylinder and weight assemblies onto the location dowels.

3. Install the three bolts (4) and lock.

4. Install the washer type spring (5) on bolt (6).

5. Put the seat assembly and governor spring on guide in governor housing. The washer type spring (5)
should be installed so the inside diameter of spring will be against the guide in governor housing (7).

6. Put the governor housing (7) in position on housing of injection pumps, and install the bolts.

7. Install the rack stop collar (8) on bolt (6).

8. Put the idle screw cover (10) in position on the governor housing so the dowel (11) in housing is engaged
with slot (12) in the rack stop collar.

9. Install the bolts that fasten the idle screw cover to the governor housing.

end by:

a) install fuel injection pump housing and governor as a unit

b) make an adjustment to the rack and governor (See FUEL RACK SETTING AND GOVERNOR

Disassemble Fuel Injection Pump Housing

start by:

a) remove governor from fuel injection pump housing

1. Remove the fuel injection pumps as follows:

a) Remove the protection cap and washer (1).

b) Install wrench (A) and remove bushing (2) from housing.

c) Remove the seal (3).

d) Install extractor (B).

e) Lift the fuel injection pump out of the housing.

f) Remove the spacer (4). Keep the spacers (4) and pumps together, and put a mark on them as to their
location in the fuel injection pump housing.

2. Disassemble the fuel injection pump as follows:

a) Remove the bonnet (5), ring (6), spring (7), and check valve (8) from the barrel (9).

b) Remove the plunger (10), washer (11), and spring (12) from the barrel (9).

NOTICE

During disassembly and assembly of fuel injection pumps, do not cause


damage to plunger surfaces. The barrel and plunger are exactly fitted,
and the parts can not be changed with other barrels or plungers.

3. Remove the rack (13).

4. Remove the lifters (14). Put identification on the lifters and keep them together with their respective pump
and spacers.

5. Remove the camshaft plate (15), bolt and lock.

6. Remove the spring (16) and the gear (17) from the camshaft.

7. Remove the camshaft (19).

8. Install tool group (C) and remove the camshaft bearings from the housing of injection pumps.

9. Remove the two bearings (18) from the fuel injection pump housing.

Assemble Fuel Injection Pump Housing

1. Install the camshaft bearings in the housing of injection pumps using tool group (C). Install the bearing
toward governor end of housing so the oil hole in bearing is in alignment with oil hole in housing. Install the
two bearings on each end of the housing so the edge of bearing will be even with end of housing.

2. Install the two rack bearings in the housing of injection pumps with tooling (D). Install the bearing toward
governor end of housing so it will be .195 ± .005 in. (4.95 ± 0.13 mm) below end of housing. Install the rack
bearing at the other end of housing so it will be even with face of pump housing.

3. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on camshaft. Install the camshaft in fuel injection pump housing.

4. Put the governor drive gear (1) and spring (2) in position on the camshaft. Install the camshaft plate (3),
bolt, and lock.

5. Install the lifters (4) in their respective positions in housing. Put clean fuel oil all over the rack. Install rack
(5) in housing of injection pumps so the groove (slot) in rack is toward governor end of housing.

6. Install the spacers in their respective positions in housing. When installing new lifters and pumps, it is
necessary to make adjustment of the fuel pump timing. See FUEL INJECTION PUMP TIMING
DIMENSION SETTING, OFF ENGINE in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.

7. Assemble the fuel injection pumps as follows:

a) Put clean fuel oil on all parts.

b) Install the spring, washer, and plunger in the barrel.

c) Install the spring, check valve, bonnet, and ring on the barrel.

NOTICE

Do not install fuel injection pumps until the rack has been put in the
center position.

8. Put the rack in center position with tooling (E) as follows:

a) Install location fixture (6) on the fuel injection pump housing.

b) Install the gauge (7). Move the gauge (7) to zero. Push the rack (5) against the gauge.

c) Install the clamp (8) on pump housing as illustrated. This will keep the rack in the center while
installing the fuel injection pumps.

9. With the rack in the center, install the fuel injection pumps as follows:

a) Turn the camshaft until cam of camshaft is in DOWN position for installation of pump.

b) Install the extractor (B) on pump.

c) Look down the pump and put the notches (9) in bonnet and barrel in alignment with the groove (slot)
(10) in pump gear segment. The groove (slot) (10) must be in alignment with the center of notches (9).
Put the pump into position so that notches (9) are in alignment with the guide pins in bore of housing.
Install the pump in its respective position in the pump housing.

d) Install the seal and bushing (11). Push down on extractor (B), and tighten bushing by hand until the
bushing is even with top of housing. If installation of the bushing cannot be made this far by hand,
remove it. Remove pump, put components in alignment again and install the bushing again.

NOTICE

Do not force bushing even with face of pump housing using a wrench.
If installation of pump is correct, bushing can be tightened by hand
until it is even with face of pump housing.

e) After installation of each pump, check the rack travel as follows: Move the clamp (8) away from the
end of rack. Check rack travel with gauge (7). If installation of the pump gear has been correct
respective to rack, total rack must be about .800 in. (20.3 mm). If total rack travel cannot be made,
remove the pump, put components in alignment, and install pump again.

f) Remove extractor (B) and tooling (E). Install wrench (A) and tighten retaining bushing to 150 ± 10
lb.ft. (20.7 ±. 1.4 mkg). Remove wrench (A). Install the felt washers and protection caps.

1. Inspect the O-ring seals on the fuel transfer pump and service meter and install new seals, if necessary. Put
clean SAE 30 engine oil on the seals.

2. Install the service meter on the fuel transfer pump.

3. Put grease on the gear of the fuel transfer pump.

4. Put the fuel transfer pump in position on engine and install the bolts that hold it to engine.

Disassemble Fuel Transfer Pump

start by:

1. Remove nut (3), gear (2), key (4) and cage (1) from shaft.

2. Remove O-ring seals (5) from cage.

3. Remove bearing and lip-type seals from cage with tooling (A).

NOTICE

Be careful not to cause damage to surfaces of cover and pump body


that fit together.

Assemble Fuel Transfer Pump

1. Clean all parts before assembling pump.

2. Install the bearing in pump body with tool (A).

4. Put a small amount of 8S6747 Aviation Type Permatex on the surface of the body.

NOTICE

Do not let Permatex enter the pump.

5. Install the lip-type seal in the cover with tooling (B). Install seal with lip to the outside.

6. Install the cover on pump body.

NOTE: After tightening bolts for the cover, the shaft must turn freely.

7. Install the seals in the cage with tool (B). Seal (4) must be installed to dimension (X), .580 in. (14.732
mm), and lip of seal must be toward the bearing end of the cage. Seal (3) must be installed to dimension (Y),
.120 in. (3.048 mm), and lip of seal must be toward pump gears.

8. Install the bearing in cage with tooling (C).

9. Install O-ring seals (6) on the cage. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on seals.

10. Install tool (D) on to shaft and install cage (5). Remove tool (D).

NOTICE

Tool (D) must be used to install cage. The shaft will cause damage to
seals if tool (D) is not used.

11. Install key (9) in shaft. Install gear (7) and nut (8) on the shaft. Tighten nut to a torque of 22 ± 5 lb.ft. (3.0

11. Remove the speed limiter plug (17), gasket, spring (18), and plunger (19) from the governor housing.

Assemble Governor
1. Install the two bearings, plug, and lip-type seal in the governor housing. The seal must be installed with lip
toward outside of the governor.

2. Put the lever assembly (1) and shaft assembly (2) into position in governor housing. Install the bolt (3) and
lock.

3. Install the high idle screw (4) and low idle screw (5) in governor housing.

4. Install the speed limiter plug (6), gasket (7), spring (8), and plunger (9) in housing.

5. Install the O-ring seal (10) on sleeve (11).

6. Install piston (12) and sleeve (11) in the cylinder (13).

7. Put the weight assembly (14) into position on cylinder (13), and install the retaining ring (15).

8. Install the valve (16) in piston (12).

9. Install the bearing and races in sleeve. Install the retaining ring.

10. Install the sleeve and bearing assembly (17) on valve (16).

11. Put the seat (18), bolt (19), washers, and spring in position on the valve (16). Install the retaining pin (20)
and ring (21).

2. Put clean engine oil on bypass valve and shaft assemblies.

3. Install the bypass valve in body (2) and fasten bypass valve with cover and bolt.

4. Install shaft assemblies (3) in body and spacer (1) on shaft assemblies. Install key on shaft.

5. Install gears (5) on shaft assemblies.

6. Put body (6) in position on shafts and install the bolts that hold it to body (4).

7. Install key on shaft.

9. Put drive gear on shaft and install washer and bolt. Tighten bolt to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

Pistons

Remove Pistons
start by:

a) remove cylinder head

b) remove oil pump

c) remove oil pan plate

1. Remove the carbon from the top inner surface of the cylinder liners.

2. Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at bottom center.

3. Remove the caps from the connecting rods for these two pistons. Put tape or a piece of rubber hose over
rod bolt threads to keep threads from causing damage to crankshaft when removing rod and piston. Push the
piston up until the piston rings are above the cylinder liner.

4. Remove the two pistons (1) and connecting rods.

5. Do Steps 2 through 4 for remainder of pistons.

Install Pistons

1. Put clean engine oil on crankshaft bearing journals and on inside of cylinder liners. Put clean engine oil on
the piston rings and on the bearings of connecting rods.

2. Put compressor (A) in position on cylinder liner. Put piston and connecting rod into position in compressor
(A) with "V" mark on piston in alignment with "V" mark on block.

NOTICE

Never install ring compressor on piston without using the liner as a


guide, or damage to the piston rings can result.

3. Push the piston into place while putting the connecting rod into position on crankshaft.

4. Put clean engine oil on threads of bolts for caps of connecting rods.

5. Put the caps on connecting rods, and install the nuts. Tighten both nuts to 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put
a mark on each nut and on end of each bolt. Turn the nuts 90° more from marks.

NOTICE

When installing caps of connecting rods be sure the number marked on


side of cap is next to and the same as the number marked on side of
rod.

6. Turn crankshaft until the next two bearing journals are at bottom center.

7. Use the above procedure for installation of the remainder of pistons.

Disassemble Pistons

start by:

a) remove pistons

1. Remove rings from piston with tool (A).

2. Remove snap ring (3), piston pin (1) and connecting rod (2) from piston.

NOTE: If rod pin bearing is replaced, use a pin boring machine to make the bearing the correct size.

1. Install rod on piston with bearing tab groove (2) and number identification on the same side as the "V"
mark (1) on top of piston.

2. Install piston pin and snap rings.

3. When the old pistons are used, clean the piston grooves with tool (A) before installing new rings.

4. Install rings on piston with tool (B). The ring openings must be 90° apart.

the cylinder head.

5. Tighten precombustion chambers to a torque of 150 ± 10 lb.ft. (20.7 ± 1.4 mkg) with tool (A).

6. If glow plug opening is not in the "GO" range position, remove precombustion chamber and install a new
gasket as shown in illustration.

7. Fill cooling system with coolant to the correct level.

9. Remove the bolt that holds the bracket (7) to the radiator guard.

10. Loosen the twelve bolts (8) that hold the radiator guard in position.

11. Fasten a hoist to the radiator and radiator guard. Weight of the radiator and radiator guard is 900 lb. (409
kg).

12. Remove the twelve bolts that hold the radiator and radiator guard in position.

Install Radiator And Radiator Guard (Power Shift)

1. Fasten a hoist to radiator and radiator guard (1).

2. Put the radiator and radiator guard in position. Install the twelve bolts, washers, and nuts that hold the
radiator guard in position.

3. Install the bolt in bracket (2).

4. Put the radiator guard in position and install the six bolts and washers.

5. Put elbow (3) in position and install the three bolts and washers.

6. Connect the two hydraulic hoses (4) and (5) to valve.

7. Put the fan in position.

8. Install the six bolts that hold the fan in position.

9. Install the upper hose and elbow on the radiator.

8. Install nuts on two 1/2" - 13 NC forged eyebolts. Install the eyebolts in the top of the radiator guard. Fasten
a hoist to the eyebolts. Weight of radiator and radiator guard is 900 lb. (408.3 kg).

9. Remove the bolts that hold the radiator guard to the frame and fenders.

10. Remove the radiator and radiator guard from the machine.

1. Install nuts on two 1/2" - 13 NC forged eyebolts. Install the eyebolts in the top of the radiator guard. Fasten
a hoist to the eyebolts. Put the radiator and radiator guard in position on the fenders and frame. Weight of

2. Install the bolts that hold the radiator guard to the fenders and frame.

2. Install the bolts that hold the oil cooler in position at the top of the radiator core.

3. Put 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound on threads of rocker shaft bolts.

5. Tighten all bolts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 in number order to a torque of 115 lb.ft. (15.9 mkg). Tighten bolts again in

order to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

6. Make adjustments until the intake valve clearance is .015 in. (0.38 mm) and exhaust valve clearance is
.025 in. (0.64 mm).

starting motor. Weight of starting motor is 70 lb. (31.7 kg).

Install Starting Motor

1. Fasten a hoist to the starting motor and put it in position on the flywheel housing.

2. Install the bolts that hold the starting motor to the flywheel housing.

3. Connect all the wires to the starting motor.

4. Install the bracket.

Remove Timing Gear Cover


start by:

a) remove alternator

b) remove water pump

c) remove crankshaft front seal

d) remove oil pan plate

1. Remove the two bolts, washers, and nuts that hold the front support (1) to the frame.

2. Lift the front of the engine with a floor jack until the front support can be removed.

3. Remove bolts (2).

4. Remove front support.

NOTE: If there is not enough clearance to remove the front support, remove the front floor plates. Loosen
the four bolts (3) that hold the rear of the engine in position.

5. Remove all the bolts (4) from the front and rear side of the timing gear cover.

6. Install one 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolt and one 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolt in timing gear cover (5).

7. Fasten a hoist to the timing gear cover. Weight of the timing gear cover is 50 lb. (22.63 kg).

NOTE: Engine oil pump does not have to be removed for removal of timing gear cover.

Install Timing Gear Cover

1. Install a new gasket (1) on the timing gear cover. Cut the gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder
block.

2. Put the timing gear cover (2) in position on the plate.

3. Install all of the bolts on the front and rear sides of the timing gear cover.

4. Put the front support (3) in position.

5. Install the four bolts that hold the front support to the timing gear cover.

6. Lower the front of the engine. Remove floor jack.

7. Install the two bolts, washers, and nuts that hold the front support to the frame.

Install Timing Gears And Plate

1. Install a new gasket for housing of accessory drive. Install a new gasket for plate of timing gears. Cut the
gasket for plate of timing gears even with bottom of cylinder block. Put 5H2471 Gasket Cement on cut edge
of gasket.

2. Put the plate in position on the cylinder block. Install the bolts and washers that hold the plate in position.

3. Install camshaft gear (1) with timing mark on camshaft in alignment with timing mark on crankshaft gear
(2). Install the bolts and washers that hold the gear in position.

4. Use tooling (A) to install bearing in idler gear to a depth of .060 in. (1.52 mm) below the front surface.

5. Install idler gear, bolts, and washers.

Remove Torque Converter Oil Cooler


start by:

a) remove engine oil filter base

1. Remove the coolant from the cooling system.

2. Remove the oil from the torque divider and the bevel gear case.

3. Remove inlet line (2) and outlet line (4) from oil cooler.

4. Remove bolts (3) from bracket.

5. Remove bolts (1) from bonnet.

6. Fasten a hoist to the oil cooler. Weight of the oil cooler is 50 lb. (22.6 kg).

7. Remove the oil cooler.

8. Remove the bonnet from the oil cooler.

1. Install the bonnet on the oil cooler.

2. Fasten a hoist to the oil cooler. Weight of the oil cooler is 50 lb. (22.6 kg).

5. Connect the inlet line and the outlet line to the oil cooler.

6. Fill the cooling system with coolant to its correct level.

Remove Turbocharger
start by:

a) remove hood

1. Remove oil supply tube (3). Disconnect oil return tube (4) from bottom of turbocharger.

2. Remove four bolts and exhaust elbow (2). Remove coupling (1).

3. Remove the bolts that hold turbocharger (5) to the exhaust manifold.

4. Disconnect turbocharger from elbows and remove turbocharger from engine.

Install Turbocharger

1. Put grease on the O-ring seals (2).

2. Put 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound on threads of turbocharger bolts.

3. Install a new turbocharger gasket.

4. Put the turbocharger (1) in position on the exhaust manifold. Install turbocharger bolts. Tighten bolts to a
torque of 40 ± 4 lb.ft. (5.5 ± 0.7 mkg).

5. Inspect the piston ring-type seals on coupling. Install coupling (3) and exhaust elbow (6).

6. Connect oil return line (5) to turbocharger. Install oil supply line (4).

Disassemble Turbocharger

start by:

a) remove turbocharger

1. Put the turbocharger in position on tool (A).

2. Put a mark on the compressor cover and housings for installation purposes.

3. Remove "V" clamp (2) and remove compressor cover (1).

4. Remove "V" clamp (3) and remove shaft housing from turbine housing (4).

5. Put shaft housing in tool (B). Remove nut and compressor wheel (5) from the shaft.

NOTICE

When loosening the nut, do not put a side force on the shaft.

6. Remove shaft housing from tool (B) and remove turbine wheel (7) and shaft from housing.

7. Remove seal ring (6) from the turbine wheel.

8. Remove snap ring and insert (8) from the housing.

9. Push the sleeve (9) out of the insert. Remove the two seal rings from the sleeve.

10. Remove deflector (10), ring (15), sleeve (11), bearing (12), ring (16), snap ring (13), bearing (17) and
snap ring (14) from the housing. Remove snap rings (13) and (14) with tool (C).

NOTE: Check the oil hole in bearing (12). If the oil hole is not open this will cause a bearing failure.

11. Turn the housing around and remove snap ring (18) and shroud (22).

12. Remove snap ring (19), sleeve (20), bearing (21), and snap ring (23). Remove the two snap rings with
tool (C).

13. Inspect all parts and install new parts as needed.

Assemble Turbocharger

1. Make sure all oil passages are open and clean. Put clean engine oil on all parts before assembly.

2. Install snap ring (4), bearing (3), sleeve (2) and snap ring (1). Install the two snap rings with tool (A).

NOTE: Install the snap rings with the round side toward the bearing.

3. Install shroud (5) on the housing. Turn the shroud to make sure it is down on the housing even. The high
part (web) (6) on shroud, will keep the shroud from turning on the housing after assembly.

4. Install snap ring that holds the shroud in place.

5. Install the bearing and two snap rings in the compressor end of the housing. Install the snap rings with tool
(A).

NOTE: Install the snap rings with the round side toward the bearing.

6. Install seal ring (7) on the shaft. Install turbine wheel (8) and shaft in the housing.

7. Put housing in position on tool (B).

8. Install ring (13), bearing (11), sleeve (12), ring (10) and deflector (9) in the housing.

NOTICE

The oil hole in bearing (11) must be open and clean.

9. Install the seal rings on sleeve (15). Install sleeve in insert (14).

10. Install insert in the housing and install snap ring (17).

11. Install compressor wheel (16) on shaft.

12. Put clean engine oil on the threads of the shaft. Install the nut (18) and tighten to a torque of 15 ± 1 lb.ft.

(2.1 ± 0.14 mkg).

NOTICE

When tightening nut do not put a side force on the shaft.

13. Install shaft housing into the turbine housing. Install "V" clamp (21) and tighten clamp to a torque of 120
lb.in. (138.4 cm.kg).

14. Install compressor cover (19) and "V" clamp (20). Tighten "V" clamp to a torque of 120 lb.in. (138.4
cm.kg).

2. Remove tool (A), rotocoil, spring and valve. Put identification on valves with respect to their locations in
the cylinder head.

3. Check the spring force with tool (B). The spring force is 57.7 ± 2.9 lb. (26.2 ± 1.3 kg). The length of spring

under test force is 1.766 in. (44.86 mm). The free length after test is 2.05 in. (52.0 mm).

4. Do Steps 1 through 3 again for remainder of valves.

Install Valves

1. Put clean engine oil on valve stems. Install valve, spring and rotocoil in the cylinder head.

2. Put tool (A) in position on valve spring and install the locks (1).

Locks can be thrown from valve when compressor is released, if they


are not in their correct position on valve stem.

3. Remove tool (A) and hit the top of valve with a plastic hammer to be sure the locks are in their correct
position on valve.

4. Do Steps 1 through 3 again for remainder of valves.

Remove Vibration Damper And Pulley

start by:

a) Remove radiator and radiator guard

2. Remove bolts (1) and vibration damper (2).

3. Remove bolt (3) and washer (4). Install enough 3/4" I.D. flat washers between washer and crankshaft to
provide 1/8" (3.2 mm) clearance between washer and pulley. Install bolt again.

4. Loosen the pulley (5) from the crankshaft with tooling (A).

5. Remove bolt, washer, and pulley.

Install Vibration Damper And Pulley

1. Put the pulley (1) in position on the crankshaft and install washer (3) and bolt (2).

2. Tighten bolt (2) to a torque of 230 ± 20 lb.ft. (31.8 ± 2.8 mkg) then hit bolt and tighten again to 230 ± 20
lb.ft. (31.8 ± 2.8 mkg).

3. Put vibration damper (4) in position on crankshaft and install bolts that hold damper to crankshaft.

1. Put the water pump (1) in position on the timing gear cover.

2. Install the bolts that hold the water pump in position.

3. Put the two hoses in position and tighten the clamps.

5. Fill cooling system with coolant to the correct level.

Disassemble Water Pump


start by:

a) remove water pump

1. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2) from the housing.

2. Loosen bolt in the impeller .25 in. (6.35 mm). Hit the bolt with a soft hammer to remove the impeller from
the shaft.

3. Remove the bolt, impeller (4), spring (3), and seal.

4. Turn the housing over and remove bolt (5) from the gear.

5. Remove retaining ring (7) and bearing from the housing.

6. Remove bearing (6) from the gear.

7. Remove snap ring (8). Remove bearing and shaft.

8. Remove the bearing from the shaft.

9. Remove lip seal from housing.

Assemble Water Pump

1. Install lip seal in water pump housing with tooling (A). The lip of the seal must be toward the bearings. Put
clean SAE 30 engine oil on the lip of the seal.

2. Install bearing (2) on shaft (1).

3. Install shaft and bearing in housing. Install snap ring that holds bearing in place.

4. Install bearing on gear. Install gear in the housing.

5. Install bolt to hold gears in place.

6. Install seal and ring (3) in the housing.

7. Install seal (4) and spring on the shaft.

8. Install impeller (6) and bolt (5). Tighten bolt to a torque of 28 ± 1 lb.ft. (3.8 ± 0.14 mkg).
