Objective:

Porous materials have extensive application in medical, aerospace, automotives and in all
modern appliances where strength to weight ratio has significant importance. Combination of
optimum strength to weight ratio for fabrication of porous material is a real challenge. Modern
rapid prototyping methods deal with the fabrication of these porous materials with controlled
porosity. Topology optimization optimizes material plan in a specified design space, for a given
loading and boundary conditions. Combination of controlled porosity with the help of rapid
prototyping and incorporation of topological optimization gives significant material saving and
provides the best strength to weight ratio and also shrink the time of manufacturing. A major
concern in the utilization of topological optimization is a manufacture-able design. Adding the
manufacturing constraint in topological optimization for the manufacture-able outcome is a
dynamic research field and the main objective of this study.

Significance and possible application of your research to your country's development*:

In Pakistan rapid prototyping is a new field and research opportunities in this field is not
available. Manufacturing of 3D printed medical implant is need of time as Pakistan is importing
all type of medical implants from different countries in the world for use in the medical industry.
Many people in our country lost their body parts in our current war against terrorism and most of
them can not afford to buy imported implants.
My research will be focused to help out such people by establishing a research group for
indigenous development of high-quality medical implant in Pakistan. This research proposal
aims to examine, optimize and evaluate the mechanical properties of porous titanium using finite
element analysis (FEA). A 3D finite element model will be developed using topological
optimization, which produces optimal design ready for additive manufacturing of medical
implant.Practical Implementation of this research will be helpful for the development of new
industry in Pakistan. (1000 words)
Proposed research plan:
To study the Porous Titanium following research methodology will be used.
a) Development of physical samples of commercially available porous titanium with
different controlled porosity levels using additive manufacturing (3D printing).
b) Mechanical characterization of samples for compressive, shear and fatigue loading. and
its life prediction by using fracture mechanics approach.
c) Development of FE model of porous titanium with different levels of porosity.
d) Simulation of FE model under the same loading conditions as used in the case of
experimental study.
e) Comparison Study of experimental and simulated results.
f) Development of topologically optimized FE model of porous titanium using ANSYS 19
and development and Mechanical characterization of topologically optimized 3D printed
porous titanium samples with different level of porosities for compressive, shear and
fatigue loading.
g) Comparison study of topologically optimized & non-optimized porous
titanium. (1000 words)

Why did you choose your proposed course and institution*?

I intend to apply for the Ph.D. Program in Mechanical Engineering under Australia Award
Scholarships. I have done my graduation in Mechanical Engineering from National University of
Science and Technology (NUST) then and MS (18 years) from Pakistan Institute of Engineering &
Applied Sciences (PIEAS). Both are well known Universities in Pakistan and in world.
I have applied in the proposed course because the proposed course is aligned both with my
academics and practical experience during my job. I think I can contribute in this field as a good
team member because my professional experience and my passion for “Design by Analysis”
prepared me to be an effective researcher in the field of FEA. I am fluent in working with 3D
modeling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software’s which will help me a lot during the
proposed course of study as the proposed research area needs strong skills in both Design and
simulation.
I have proposed university of Queensland as my first preference because my future goal is to
involve myself in the research field related to FEA of porous material for medical and aerospace
engineering. Associate Professor Martin Veidt of School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering,
University of Queensland is already working on the FEA of Porous materials, so under his kind
supervision I will be able to produce good quality research on porous material. Also the
infrastructure already developed by professor Matrin will be very help during my research. I am
excited to continue my research in the proposed institute because research is my passion and
proposed institute is the only place where state of the arts facilities are available for the
researcher in academic laboratories. the department of Mechanical Engineering, University of
Queensland, Australia is providing an excellent platform for research in the field of FEA of
porous materials for 3D printing and rapid prototyping. That’s why my first choice is “The
University of Queensland Australia”. (2000 words)

How will the proposed study contribute to your career*?

My dissertation research in both undergraduate and master level was related with “Design &
Simulation” which leads me to opt a professional career as “Mechanical Design Engineer. Now a
days i am working as a “Principal Design Engineer” in my organization in the field of CAD design
& Finite Element Analysis (FEA). I am leading a team of research engineers for “Product Design
& Analysis”. I applied my knowledge of design and FEA in many R&D projects for my
organization and shaped products for practical use. For such R&D projects I looked up an
enormous amount of technical published literature in field of FEA. During my professional
career i have produced a of lot technical manuscripts, including design reports, analysis reports,
calculations, specifications and other related R&D reports.
My organization intends to work in the specialized field of 3D printing and rapid prototyping
technology for its future products related to medical industry. My research will provide a
foundation for indigenous development of new products for medical purpose.
My ambition is that after receiving education in Australia, I will return to my home country and
formulate a small group for research and development for production of medical implant in my
country and paved the way of self-reliance in this specialized field by producing the medical
implants indigenously in Pakistan.
Moreover my organization have collaboration with European Organization for Nuclear Research
(CERN), Switzerland and I was fortune enough to have served as associate member (Mechanical
Design Engineer) of CERN. The proposed study will also be beneficial for my professional career
to work for the CERN related projects where application of porous material will be necessary
for development of future accelerators.
In a nut shell the proposed study will be highly advantageous for my professional career, my
organization and specially for the people of my mother land to acquire affordable medical
implants.

How have you contributed to solving a challenge and to implementing change or reform? (Be specific and
include: what aspect/s of your leadership knowledge, skills and practice you consider to be well established
and effective; which people or organisations you worked with to solve the problem; and what creative
methods were used.)*:

Being the professional product design engineer challenges of diversified nature is my day to day
business. From understanding of client’s specification till the delivery of final product all stages
are full of challenges. In my professional career of 13 years in product design, I came across
numerous challenges starting from conceptual design till the final product development.

One of such challenging tasks was the design and analysis of a mechanized manipulator for
cleaning & testing of steam generator of a power plant. The task of design & development was
exclusively assigned to me and the given time to complete the task was very limited.

The task was a real challenge due to the very stringent physical constraint and precise
positioning and alignment constraint. Moreover, the requirement of extremely light weight was
an additional design challenge. As the task was a mix of mechanical, electrical, electronics and
material science knowledge. I have to deal with the people of different fields. So, I use my
project management skills and split my main objective into tasks and subtasks. My next action
was to formulate the necessary resource data to perform these tasks. All these activities were
formulated in a Gantt chart using Primavera so that progress can be assessed at any time. Due
to the time constraint a multitasking approach was used for which i have contacted
professionals of different organization in the field of control, Software development, material,
Production and quality assurance.

All experts were briefed regarding the requirement during multiple technical sessions. Regular
progress review meetings were conducted to kept updated all the group members. For timely
completion a new concept of virtual design environment was introduced in my organization
where all the stake holders can access the development in the design and limitation of the
design by others work. This concept of virtual design environment was very helpful for timely
completion of task. (2000 words)

Please:- a) give up to three practical examples of how you intend to use the knowledge, skills and connections
you will gain from your scholarship. Possible tasks can be personal and/or professional; and
b) list any possible constraints you think may prevent you from achieving these tasks.*:

As i am working as a product design engineer. The knowledge from my proposed study under Australian
Award Scholarship will be beneficial both for my professional career as well as for the people of my
country. For example, the main purpose of my research will be to get acquainted with the Design and
Analysis techniques of porous material to produce the economical and reliable medical implant within
my country. Many people in Pakistan can not afford the expensive implants being imported from
developed countries. To improve the deprived quality of life of such people is my main motivation of this
research study. If i will be fortune enough to get this scholarship, I will utilize my skills of product design,
to develop a research and development group in my organization specific for medical implants. The
other practical examples where I can utilize the knowledge from the proposed study includes:

Light weight design and manufacturing of automobile and wind turbine parts.

Study of light weight composites for cryogenic application in CERN.

The possible constraint for achieving these tasks includes:

Very limited knowledge of this field in my country.

There is no R&D organization working on this particular field so people may hesitate to work in a new
field.
The development of infrastructure with in the country for the design and development of medical
Implants.

In the last I just want to say that if I will be able to produce the medical implants within my country after
the successful completion of my research study, it will be cheap and reliable. So, the people can afford
these implants and will improve their living which is my ultimate goal of this research study. May God
give us strength to help the needy people.

I have the Knowledge of both CAD and FEA and have self-motivation to work in this field. and a design
and engineering organisation already intend to work on this research area study andFor example,
