Work Book (Question & Answer )

1. Complete the summary of the poem. Use the pictorial hints provided.
The poet was wandering as lonely as a cloud. He was walking
through the vales and hills. Suddenly, as he passed a lake, he noticed a big group of
yellow daffodils waving in the breeze. There were ten thousand of them around this particular bay. And all these
flowers were dancing. So did the waves of the lake. But the daffodils danced
better. The poet’s loneliness was replaced by joy, but he didn't
even realize what wealth he has received until later. Now, whenever he’s lying on his couch, feeling kind of
pensive, he just thinks of the daffodils, and his
heart dances happily.
2. Answer the following questions in 30 to 40 words each.
a) Why does it appear that waves and the daffodils are competing?
Ans. When the poet saw the daffodils they appeared to be tossing their head in
a sprightly dance. The waves in the bay beside which the daffodils grew

also appeared to be moving in a joyful dance. Moreover, the poet felt that
the movement of the daffodils was better than that of the sparkling waves. Thus it appears as though the
daffodils and the waves were competing.
b) How do we know that ‘this’ show of the daffodils had a long lasting effect
on the poet?
Ans. The poet gives us a vivid description of the daffodils and the place where
he saw them. The poet also mentions that when he saw the daffodils he
didn’t realise the wealth of experience he had accumulated. However, later
on when he sat in a thoughtful mood the image of the daffodils flashed in
his mind. This tells us that the show of the daffodils has had a long lasting
effect on the poet.
3. Then and Now
How does the poem make use of contrast? Consider the contrast between
the poet’s feeling before, while and after seeing the daffodils.
Before : The poet was walking around through the hills and valleys, but
he felt all lonely and sad.
While : The poet’s loneliness was replaced by joy, but he didn't even
realise what a gift he has received until later.
After : Now, whenever the poet is in a thoughtful mood, he just thinks

of the daffodils, and his heart is happily dancing.
4. Poetry is all around us. How has William Wordsworth used his five senses to describe the daffodils
which he saw in the spring?
1.Taste- He tastes the sweet air of spring or the salt of the water in
the bay.
2. Touch- He feels the wind in his hair from the breeze.
3.Smell- He smells the dampness in the air from the water in the
lake.
4.Sight- He sees many brightly coloured yellow daffodils and the
