Second Quarter Week 3

Lesson Number 8 Topic: The Power to Overcome Our Weakness

Objectives: At the end of the lesson you are expected to:
Doctrine: Explain the important lessons in the story of Jesus walking on the water in
overcoming our fears;
Moral: Point out ways on how to overcome our weaknesses;
Worship: Compose a prayer recognizing God’s abiding presence in one’s life.

I. NEED TO CONNECT
Where there times in your life when you feel weak and vulnerable? When was that? How
did you overcome such feeling? Watch this link and learn from June Lee:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWMnQprLhXo

II. NEED TO DISCOVER

Go to page 64 of your textbook under Seeing God’s Message in My Daily Life. Read the
story “Learning to Walk for the First Time”. After reading, answer the four (4) questions under
Testing My Understanding on page 65. Spend some time to think and reflect first before writing
your answer.
Possible Answers:
1. It was shown in the story that the baby was trying to stand on her own but seemed
afraid. With her aunt's guidance, she was able to stand and walk little by little. She was able
to conquer her fear from falling and started to walk on her own.
2. The writer of the story holds the hand of her niece and teaches her how to walk,
watches her if she needs her help, and runs immediately to her to guide her.
3. Our journey as God's children is that we have fears that hinder us from doing things
that affect our life. But God is always on our sides to help and guide us. He will allow us to
fall but give us strength to continue and try again just like what happened to the baby's first
steps.
4. Answers may vary based on one's own experience.

III. NEED TO DISCUSS

After answering all the questions, I invite you to reflect over your answers and ask yourself
this question: What is God’s message to me in this activity? Do I also struggle to overcome
my own fears? What are my fears?

After answering all that were asked, what are your realizations and insights from the
activity? Under God’s Message for Me, we learned that:
 We fear many things.
 Sometimes, fear hinders us from doing the right thing. But God assures us that “He
is with us and in us.”
 Our faith in Him will lead us to peace and comfort.

What shall we do when we are afraid?

Now, let us reflect on what God has to tell us from the Sacred Scriptures. Get your Bible
and open it to Matthew 14: 22-32. If you do not have a Bible, open your textbook on page 66
under Seeing God’s Message in the Scriptures. Read slowly and prayerfully the passage. After
reading, spend some moment of silence for personal reflection. After reflection, answer the four (4)
questions under Testing My Understanding.
Possible Answers:
1. Answers may vary. (The disciples feared of a “ghost” walking on the water. In
my opinion, it was a reasonable fear for humans cannot normally walk on
water.)
2. Answers may vary. (Peter became impetuous. He asked Jesus if he could go to him
on the water. If I were Peter, I will do the same.)
3. Peter started to walk on the water but when the strong wind blew, he
doubted and was overcome of fear. He wavered on his faith and so he started
to sink.
4. Jesus said to Peter, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Jesus means that
with Him you have nothing to be afraid of.

Now, open your book on page 67 under Seeing God’s Message in the Teachings of the
Church and read AA 4. AA refers to Apostolica Actuositatem (Decree on the Apostolate of the
Laity, 1965). After reading, answer the following questions:
 How do we find God in our life?
- God is our protector and covering - God is always with us. He protects
and cover us from any harm and danger.
- God is our way maker - God makes a way for us where there seems to
be no way.
- God is our savior - He gives us freedom by saving us from the sins of
this world. He wants us to be with Him forever. He redeemed us and He
is preparing our place in heaven.
- God is our provider - God provides us all that we need like shelter, food,
clothes and other things we needed the most.
- God is love - even though other people don't show us love and care,
God loves us and cares for us. He showed love to us when He gives his
son, Jesus.
- God is our deliverer - God delivers us from any evil. Just like Israelite,
God deliver them from the Egyptians and lead them to the promise land.
- God is our creator - He created the whole world. He created us for His
purposes only.

To integrate in your daily life God’s message from your experience, from the Scripture and
from the Church’s teachings, read the details under Integrating God’s Message in My Life on
pages 67-70 of the textbook. Please be guided by the following questions to deepen your
understanding:
1. When can fear become harmful?
2. Do you believe that fear is nothing if we keep our faith in God?
3. What is human act?
4. What is ignorance? How does this impede us from performing a human act?
5. How do fear and passion affect our capacity to do moral acts?
6. How can we overcome our weaknesses as shown in our ignorance, fear and dominant
passion?
7. How does faith enable us to overcome ignorance, fear and our passion?
8. Explain the importance of prayer for us to overcome our weaknesses?

IV. NEED TO GENERALIZE

To sum up important details that you should remember in making moral decisions, please
read Nurturing God’s Message on page 71 of the textbook.
• We fear many things that sometimes hinder us from doing the right thing.
• Ignorance, fear, and passion are human weaknesses.
 Fear is a disturbance of the mind caused by the thought of a threatening evil.
 Ignorance is having an intellect that has erroneous knowledge, or lacks
knowledge.
 Passion or concupiscence is strong tendencies or desires for power, pleasure or
possessions.
• God will always help us to overcome our human weaknesses.
• Prayer helps us remain in God’s grace. It empowers and strengthens us in our goal to
overcome our human weaknesses.
• God will not give us difficulties beyond our strength.
• Jesus dispels our ignorance by His teachings. God's grace is greater than our greatest
fear or strongest passion.

V. NEED TO APPLY

To reinforce and gauge your learning about the lesson, do the activity under Empowered
by God’s Message on page 70 of the textbook.
1. Define ignorance, fear, and passion and their effects on our human actions.
- Ignorance is a lack of knowledge and information. Fear is defined as to be afraid of someone or something.
A feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity;
dread; terror; fright; apprehension. While passion defines a strong liking or desire. Passion affects us
through the experience of positive emotions during activity engagement that takes place on a regular and
repeated basis, it is posited that harmonious passion contributes to sustained psychological well-being while
preventing the experience of negative affect, psychological conflict, and ill-being.

VI. NEED TO ASSESS

Answer the Assessment Activities on pages 71-73 of the textbook. Follow the given
instruction. In answering questions, please write your answers in complete sentences. Answer
briefly and direct to the point. After answering, kindly take pictures of your answers and send
to me through messenger or e-mail.

VII. NEED MORE ACTIVITIES

During this time of the pandemic, when schools adopted distant classes via on line, some
students loss focus on their studies and are hooked up by online games. This is the feedback of
many parents whose attention was called because of the incomplete grades of their children.

As a student, what should you do so that you will not be carried by your passion for
online games? Discuss how you should manage your time and efforts so that you gain
focus to your studies and other responsibilities. Write your answer in not less than 10
sentences.
