the light of the discussion content - "The Meaning of Scientia, Virtus et Devotio.” Write your essay in 15-
18 sentences.

When I was choosing a school for college, I knew I want to study in a school that does not only teach
academics, but also the values that I would need in my future endeavors. I found that in University of San
Carlos. Just from their university motto, it says there the three aspects of Christian Witnessing, namely:
Scientia which means science or knowledge, Virtus which means virtue, and Devotio which means
devotion or dedication. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and wit all your
mind and with all your strength – Mark 12:30

Being a Carolinian, it is already our commitment to follow these commandments of Jesus. Scientia
challenges us to broaden our knowledge of the truth and hone our talents and skills that God has given us,
for us to use them in our future careers. This also challenges us to think critically and to communicate
always for us to be dependable and reliable in the future. The Virtus tells us to listen to our conscience,
build our character, and have wisdom. Like they say, A person of virtue is in touch with one’s heart. One
activity of the human heart is praying. It is also expected of us Carolinians to be prayerful. Being virtuous
means having great faith. Lastly, the Devotio, this is a Latin word which means to “dedicate by a vow”. This
just shows us to make a vow to be dedicated towards God, not just in a form of prayer and worship but also
in our action of love and justice. This tells us to apply our knowledge and virtues in real life situations.

It may be a difficult to put these into action especially during those times that are just challenging and tiring,
but as a true-blooded Carolinian, we have to commit ourselves to have this motto in our heart and mind.
This is what God want us to do, to be committed all throughout and always go through each challenges, in
order for us to reach our goals in life.
Rationale: Delving into your Carolinian identity is looking into oneself. I invite you for a quick review of your
lapses, failures and difficulties in life. Since this Education with a Mission is geared towards character
formation, self-introspection is inevitable. In your self-assessment, once you have identified an instance of
mistake/failure in a sentence, then flip it to make it positive. Take this as an opportunity to self-evaluate,
problem solve, and improve self.

May this “flip” activity lead you to initially problem-solve and to nurture the self towards growth.
