The Ramnagar Forest Division in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand built

the first eco-bridges for smaller mammals and reptiles.

10
www.gradeup.co

What are Eco-Bridges?

The Eco-Bridges or Eco-Ducts are constructed to enhance the wildlife

connectivity that is generally disrupted due to logging or highways. It
includes concrete underpasses, canopy bridges/overpass tunnels,
amphibian tunnels. These bridges are usually overlaid with planting from
the area to give a contiguous look with the landscape. The eco-bridges
also include overpasses, fish ladders, green roofs, tunnels, canopy
bridges.

Why are they required?

* According to the WII (Wildlife Institute of India), around 50,000

kilometres of road projects have been constructed in India in 5 to 6 years.

* Also, several highways have been upgraded to four lanes.

* As per the National Tiger Conservation Authority, major animal

corridors are cut by the National Highways. They are the State Highway

The microclimatic zones are the regions where the weather is different
from that of the surrounding areas. The primary reasons identified for the
microclimatic zone shifting are disappearing wetlands, change in the land
use patterns, encroachment on natural ecosystems and urban heat island.

The urban heat Island occurs when the city or region experiences higher
temperatures as compared to its nearby rural areas. These urban heat
Island traps the heat locally and is a significant cause of the microclimatic
zone shifting.
