Modes of failure of gravity dams
1. By overturning (rotation) about the toe.
Σ𝑅𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 Σ𝑀𝑅
𝐹𝑆 = = > 1.5
Σ𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 Σ𝑀0
2. By crushing (compression).
Σ𝑉 6𝑒
𝑃𝑣 𝑚𝑎𝑥/𝑚𝑖𝑛 = (1 ± )
𝐵 𝐵
Where:
σ 𝐹𝑉
𝜎𝑐𝑐 =
𝑏×1
and bending stress σcbc at any fiber at distance y from Neutral Axis is
σ 𝑀. 𝑦
𝜎𝑐𝑏𝑐 =∓
𝐼
𝑀 = 𝐹𝑉 . 𝑒
37
3. By development of tension, causing ultimate failure by crushing.
If e > b/6, the normal stress at the heel will be -ve or tensile. When the eccentricity e is
greater than b/6 a crack of length lc will develop due to tension which can be calculated
as:
σ 𝐹𝑉 σ 𝑀. 𝑦 σ 𝐹𝑉 12 σ 𝐹𝑉 . 𝑒 𝑏
𝜎𝑐𝑐 = 𝜎𝑐𝑏𝑐 → = → = . ( − 𝑙𝑐 )
𝑏×1 𝐼 𝑏×1 𝑏3 2
𝑏 𝑏
𝑙𝑐 = (1 − )
2 6𝑒
𝐵
𝑒≤
6
No tension should be permitted at any point of the dam under any circumstance for
moderately high dams.
For no tension to develop, the eccentricity should be less than b/6.
Or, the resultant should always lie within the middle third.
38
Effect of Tension Cracks
Since concrete cannot resist the tension, a crack
develops at the heel, which modifies the uplift pressure
diagram.
Due to tension crack, the uplift pressure increases in
magnitude and net downward vertical force or the
stabilizing force reduces.
The resultant force gets further shifted towards toe
and this leads to further lengthening of the crack.
The base width thus goes on reducing and the
compressive stresses on toe goes on increasing, till the toe
fails in compression or sliding.
39
4. by shear failure called sliding.
𝜇∙Σ𝑉
F.S.S (factor of safety against sliding) = (must be >1)
Σ𝐻
𝜇∙Σ𝑉+𝐵∙𝑞
S.F.F (shear friction factor) = {must be > (3-5)}

Where
40
Principal and shear stresses
𝜎 = 𝑃𝑣 ∙ 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 𝑎 − 𝑃′ 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝛼
Where
𝜎 =Major principal stress which is not greater than (fc)
𝑃𝑣 =Minor principal stress

42
𝜎1 = 𝑃𝑛 . 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 ∅ − 𝑃 + 𝑃𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 ∅ Principal Stress for U/S

Example (G.L.ASAWA): For the profile of a gravity dam shown in Fig. 16.8, compute principal
stresses for usual loading and vertical stresses for extreme loading at the heel and toe of the
base of the dam. Also determine factors of safety against overturning and sliding as well as
shear-friction factors of safety for usual loading and extreme loading (with drains
inoperative) conditions. Consider only downward earthquake acceleration for extreme
loading condition. Sediment is deposited to a height of 15 m in the reservoir. Other data are
as follows:
Coefficient of shear friction, = 0.7 (usual loading) and = 0.85 (extreme loading)
Shear strength at concrete-rock contact, C = 150 × 104 𝑁/𝑚2
Weight density of concrete = 2.4 × 104 𝑁/𝑚2
Weight density of water = 1 × 104 𝑁/𝑚3
