Demodulation

 Process of recovering the original message from the modulated wave is

known as Demodulation
 also known as detection: used in early times
 detector is an electronic circuit that is used to recover the original message
from the modulated carrier wave.
 term detection is the older term and Demodulation is the popular term used.

Demodulation Detectors

AM Detectors are of two types

 Square Law diode detectors
 Linear diode detectors
 Square Law diode detectors: utilizes non linear portion of dynamic current-voltage
characteristics of an electron device. The behavior is analyzed using a power series
representation.
 Linear Diode detector: uses rectification property of the diode. Current flows in pulses
through these diodes. Behavior of such circuits cannot be analyzed using power series
representation
Square Law Diode Detector

Square law demodulator is used to demodulate low level AM wave.

Square Law Diode Detector

 Square law detector uses non linear properties of the

diode.
 circuit is used for detecting small amplitude
modulating wave(about 1V)
Working:
 Diode is positively biased to shift the zero signal
operating point
 Diode will work to separate the carrier signal(High
Frequency signal) and modulating signal (Low
frequency signal.
 This signal will be passed through RC low pass
filter which blocs high frequency signal an allows
low frequency signal to pass
 at output modulating signal will be achieved.

Linear Diode Detector/ Envelope Detector

 Circuit is used for detecting large amplitude modulating

wave(about 1V)
 Circuit uses rectification characteristic of the diode

Modulated
Carrier wave Working:
Assume no power supply is there initially so capacitor does not
charge.
So circuit will work as half wave rectifier
when supply is connected , diode is forward biased and capacitor
starts charging for positive half cycle.
for negative half cycle diode s reverse based so capacitor starts
discharging, dc output is across R.
