2.0 ELABORATION OF THE PROPOSED TOPIC


WHAT IS DEMENTIA?
• Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning in the brain, which
affects the thinking, remembering, understanding capabilities of a
person.
• It can disturb they daily life and activities.
• Some people with dementia cannot control their emotions,
behaviours and their personalities may change.

RISING SCENARIO OF DEMENTIA IN INDIA


 It is estimated that 5.3 million people above the age of 60 have
dementia in India in 2020.
 This equals to one in 27 people, according to the Dementia in India
2020 report. Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common type of
dementia.
 In 2015, an estimated 41 lakh persons aged over 60 years had
dementia in India.
 This is estimated to rise to 63.5 lakh by 2025 and
to 133.3 lakh by 2050.
 This indicates that the burden of dementia in India is already
significant and is expected to rise rapidly over the next two to three
decades.

EXISTING DEMENTIA FACILITIES AND CAPACITY IN INDIA

 Research conducted by Tata Trusts estimated that the total capacity


across senior living facilities is currently at 97,000 beds (rounded).
 As per the website dadadadi.org, there are 728 Old Age Homes in
India today.
 The treatment or service gap for dementia in India is thought to be
nearly 90%, with only one in 10 people with dementia receiving a
diagnosis, treatment or care.
 The capacity of suitable care centres India is very low.
 For instance, 41lakh people have dementia, but full-time care capacity
is estimated to be available for less than 2000 people.
 This results in almost all care being delivered by the family at home
and without information or financial support.

TYPES OF DEMENTIA
 Alzheimer's disease. This is the most common cause of dementia
 Vascular dementia
 Lewy body dementia
• Frontotemporal dementia
• Mixed dementia
 Other Dementias
WHO ARE ELDERLY?

The person who has attained the age of 60 and above is an old
person/senior citizen.

People may be considered old when they become grandparents when they
begin to do less work or become professionally inactive after retirement.

WHY ARE ELDERLY HOMES NEEDED?

 For elderly and senior people, old age homes are required since they need
utmost care and need to be looked after once they grow old.
 Reasons for old age homes existing can be due to migration or location of
children due to work, lack of time in youngsters, neglect, family problems
etc.
 Concept of old age homes are becoming less of a stigma at a slow rate.

3.0 DETAILS OF CHOSEN TOPIC


• The centre is an proposal of the existing DEMSCARF facility in Tambaram,
which has only 20 people capacity.
• Center will offer assessment, diagnosis, and treatment options for
dementia.
• The center will offer assessment , diagnosis and treatment options along
with a dementia friendly accommodations and caregivers.
• The dementia friendly design covers all major required spaces with the
maximum landscape areas.

4.0 STATE WHETHER THE TOPIC IS HYPOTHETICAL OR


A LIVE PROPOSAL
The project is a hypothetical proposal.
5.0 A. LOCATION
• Chennai, Tamil Nadu
• According to the LASI Wave 1, India report 2020, Tamil Nadu has
the highest population of people aged 60 and above, with 15 per
cent of them living alone.
• Nearly 41 lakh Indians dementia.
• About 30,000 of Chennai's residents also suffer from this
condition, but so far, there are no centers particularly dedicated
to their treatment and care.
• Doctors underscore urgent need for centres that offer holistic
treatment to deal with illness.

4.2 SCOPE & AIM OF THE PROJECT
 AIM
 To design a special care facility that can provide the patients with
the best care for their well-being, with scope for maximum
supervision and comfort.
 Design spaces for both residential care and part-time care of
affected patients

• SCOPE
 The project aims to spread awareness on the rising situation in
India and provide a model centre for future references.
 With India, being a country where only 1 in 10 people can
be accommodated to achieve treatment, the scope of dementia
care centres arises.

4.3 LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT


• The existing dementia care facilities in India lack proper
infrastructures and have below minimum capacity to
accommodate the patients. The thesis will have to rely on
secondary sources of data – net and book case studies.
