HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITION

Ways to avoid Hazard:

• Identify the condition

• Think of a defense
• Act immediately

1.) Light Condition

➢ Speed should slow down
➢ Wear sunglass if too much sunlight to protect the eyes

The Don’ts in Night Driving

❖ Never drive with your defective headlights

❖ Never drive too fast at night
❖ If there is a mechanical trouble with your car, pull off the
roadside. Place an EWD (Early Warning Device) before or after your
vehicle and leave your headlight on low beam.
❖ Always turn your headlights on. Don’t use parking light when your
car is in motion

2.) Weather Condition

Bad weather condition may affect the ability to see clearly and quite
hard to control the vehicle

Always keep your car in a low speed when raining.

Keep an eye on other vehicles and passengers
Never drive too fast on wet roads

Aquaplaning – also known as hydroplaning by the tires of a vehicle

aircraft or other wheeled vehicle occurs when a layer of water builds
between the wheels of the vehicle and the road surface, which leads to
slipping/skidding.

3.) Traffic Condition

➢ Adjusting driving conditions is an excellent safe practice or long-
distance driving
➢ Always be alert on pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, tricycles
and parked cars.

➢ You must have “good reaction” when driving the city streets
Things you need to pay attention in City driving:
Traffic light signs, buses, jeepneys, trucks, taxis, ambulances, fire
trucks, pedestrians, parked cars, narrow alleys, school zones, hospital
zones, one-way streets, through lanes, and turning lanes

At a traffic light

➢ Look on both sides before going on a green light

➢ Don’t try to beat the traffic light when it’s yellow
➢ Stop when the red light is on and stop on the horizontal line
➢ Give space for pedestrians, don’t let your car protrude on a zebra
crossing
At an Intersection

➢ Stay on proper lane

➢ Slow down speed when turning
➢ Use signal lights before turning (30 meters before turning)
➢ Stay on proper lane before turning
In Expressways

➢ Stay on the right lane first before going up to speed

➢ Be alert! Keep a 1 car vehicle length distance and beware of rear-
end collision
➢ Don’t exceed speed limits, always keep an eye on speedometer.
Adjust speed on weather and traffic conditions
➢ Signal first, be aware of the space when going to pass
➢ Always keep awake
➢ Get out on the road when emergency, get out of the car and open
the hood. Use EWD especially at night
➢ Always use the signal when exiting the expressway and slow down
Parking golden rules
➢ Never park your car on curve sides
➢ Never park in front of driveways and hydrants
➢ Never double park your car
➢ Do not rush when leaving your parking space
RIGHT OF WAY

➢ Letting others go first. NEVER assume that you automatically have

the right of way
➢ It is always given(yielded) by someone
➢ Laws are clear about who should yield
Roundabout/Rotunda

➢ Vehicle around the rotunda have the right of way over vehicles
about to enter
➢ When entering a highway from a driveway, the vehicles on the highway
have the right of way
➢ Never insist on taking the right of way if other drivers are not
following the rules, let them have it to prevent accidents
Right of Way: Basic Rules

➢ Always yield to emergency vehicle

➢ Move to far right and stop
➢ If lights are not on, it’s just an ordinary vehicle
Special Situations: Police Cars

➢ If a policeman has someone pulled over, you are required by law to

vacate the right lane of the highway unless it is impossible
Trains:

➢ Trains can’t stop quickly

➢ Trains can’t turn
➢ Always yield to trains
Funeral Processions:

➢ It’s courteous to yield to funeral processions

➢ Never cut through or join a procession
➢ Participants in the procession should have on their low-beam
headlights or flags on their vehicles
