Basic Electrical Safety Awareness

As one of the requirements for graduation, we are required to conduct at least two
outreach programs in order to apply what we learned from school and help our community in
little ways that we can. Last January 13, 2019, we, the Electrical Engineering students of COC-
PHINMA conducted an outreach program entitled “BASIC ELECTRICAL SAFETY AWARENESS” at
Mahogany Village, Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City. The aim of this program is to let the people
be aware of the common terms and procedures on how to cope with the dangers of electricity.
The electrical safety awareness includes the dos and don’ts that the household can do when
dealing and maintaining their electrical wirings at top condition.

Before the event, the EE governor decided that the program will be conducted in a
household to household manner. And so, the EE students went on door after door and plenty of
the residents were very receptive and eager to learn about electrical safety. During the event, I
observed that most of the people can’t really understand the real meaning of short circuit. All
they know is that it can cause fire, which is true, but they didn’t really understood how and
when short circuits happen in our houses. Since they did not know when and how short circuits
occur, they also don’t know what and how to do basic prevention techniques that they can do
in order to avoid the worst. We were also able to teach them the dangers of electrocution and
how to avoid being electrocuted. Aside from lecturing the people of Mahogany village about
basic electrical safety, we were also able to teach them on how to better save from their
electric bills.

In conclusion, most of the residents of Mahogany Village were unaware of the hazards
of a poorly maintained electrical wiring and the basic techniques that they can perform in order
to avoid the worst case scenarios. With this, I was very glad that I and the rest of the EE Team
were able to impart our knowledge that we learned from our school. Little it may be, but I know
that the residents of Mahogany Village are now well equipped with the knowledge on how to
better deal with the dangers of electricity.

Electrical Basic Installations and Safety Standards

In order to apply what we learned from school and to help the progress of our
community, we are required to conduct at least two outreach programs. Last August 3, 2018,
we, the Electrical Engineering students of COC-PHINMA conducted a seminar-outreach program
entitled “Electrical Basic Installations and Safety Standards” at Barangay Benigwayan, Alubijid,
Misamis Oriental. The objective of the program is to educate the residents of Barangay
Benigwayan regarding the safety procedures and techniques that can be done in order to avoid
the hazards that could be encountered when dealing with electricity. This includes explanations
of the definition of common electrical terminologies that they usually encounter and a hands-
on training activity on basic electrical circuit that they can observe in their own household as
well as proper procedures when maintaining the electrical circuits.

The event was held at the basketball court of Barangay Benigwayan. The first part of the
seminar was the education and familiarization of common electrical terms. The speakers of the
seminar were selected from the EE student body. Most of the attendees asked several
questions on how and when does electrical short circuits occur. Their questions were answered
by the speakers as well as the Chairman of the electrical engineering department of COC-
PHINMA. The second part of the program was the orientation of a basic electrical circuit which
consists of a light bulb, a switch, a circuit breaker, and of course, the electrical wires. The
attendees were educated regarding the basic principle on how each of the components of the
electrical circuit work together. They were also taught on what and how a proper electrical wire
splicing should be done. The last part of the program was the hands-on activity where the
attendees were encouraged to install their own basic electrical circuit with the knowledge they
gained from the seminar as well as the components that were readily provided. Electrical
Engineering students were asked to assist the attendees since they will be dealing with a live
electrical circuit. Most of the residents enjoyed the last part of the activity since they were able
to witness when and how a short circuit occurs and the circuit breakers tripping.

The residents of Barangay Benigwayan were very glad and thankful that we chose to
visit their place and shared our knowledge regarding basic electrical installations and safety
standards. I was also glad to visit such a wonderful place with residents willing to accept our
cause. Now, more of the residents are well educated in maintaining the electrical wirings in
their own household as well as the proper procedures when dealing with electricity.

IIEE 2017: Sustaining Growth Initiatives for Global Excellence

The 13th Regional Student Conference was held last September 28, 2017 at Xavier
University-Ateneo de Cgayan, Cagayan de Oro City, bearing the theme of IIEE 2017: Sustaining
Growth Initiatives for Global Excellence. There were four seminars conducted namely Arduino
Programming, Microcontrollers, Basic Motor and Controls, and Basic Control Systems. The
annual event gathered all the Electrical Engineering students under Region 8 to be aware of the
new trends and innovations that the world of an Electrical Engineer should face.

The first seminar was about Arduino Programming and Microcontrollers. As an Electrical
Engineering student I am familiar with the topic of the seminar since most of the projects that
we have in school now is program based. As what I have known, Arduino it is a versatile circuit
board with a wide variety of both simple and complex projects. The microcontroller at the
center of the circuit board is the one responsible for making Arduino a very useful circuit board
which has its own simple programming language that anyone can understand. The second
seminar was about Basic Motor and Controls which was an introduction on how Motor works
and the basic equipments that will control the Motor. This topic is under our DC and AC
machines subject so we are already familiar with the different types of motors and the theories
that govern the working principle of a motor. The motor control techniques and equipment
however was a new knowledge to us since we never really have hands-on activities on motors
in our school. The last part of the seminar was about Basic Control Systems which tackles about
the different types of control systems that is being used in nowadays. The topic is tackled in our
Instrumentation and Control subject but during that time, the subject was available at the first
semester of a fifth-year student. The speaker tackles about centralized and distributed control
systems and where it is commonly used. I was able to learn for the first time about what SCADA
is and where it is being used.

In conclusion, there were plenty of ways to cope with the fast progress of technology.
Familiarization and extensive study is expected for us aspiring electrical engineers to further
push the boundaries of human knowledge.

IIEE 2018: Embracing Global Challenges through Sustainable Energy Practices

The 14th Regional Student Conference was held last September 27, 2018 at the
University Convention Center of Central Mindanao University, University Town, Musuan,
Maramag, Bukidnon bearing the theme of IIEE 2018: Embracing Global Challenges through
Sustainable Energy Practices. Two seminars were conducted namely EE and the Construction
Industry and Industrial Automation and Instrumentation. The annual event gathered all the
Electrical Engineering students under Region 8 to compete, for camaraderie, and to be aware of
the new trends and innovations that the world of an Electrical Engineer is facing.

The first topic that was tackled in the seminar was about EE and the Construction
Industry. This new topic is something that I have never encountered so this is something new to
me. Unfortunately, while on our way to CMU, the road at Maluku, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon
was closed and left us stranded for five to six hours. By the time we arrived at the Convention
Center, the seminar already started and the first topic was about to be end. But I still was able
to take note of the importance of the role of an Electrical Engineer play in the Construction
Industry which was to design, install, maintain, survey, and supervise all the work that is related
or that has something to do with electricity. The second topic was about Industrial Automation
and Instrumentation. This subject tackles about the new trends that an Electrical Engineer
should study. In line with the fast growth of technology and the climate changing, we, the
aspiring Electrical Engineers are encourage to find new ways and innovations to conserve
energy using modern technology. Most of these energy conserving innovations were made
possible by the help of microcontrollers which can be programmed to interact with every
corner of a building.

The world today is facing a global climate crisis which can greatly affect the lives of
every living organism. The societies of Electrical Engineers are doing extensive researches on
how to better conserve energy in order to help not only the environment but as well as the
entire human race. As to what I have understood in the seminar, it is possible to save a lot of
our finances which goes to our electric bills with the help of modern technology with less
impact in the environment.

IIEE 2019: Distinctive Journey in Advancing Global Competitiveness

The 15th Regional Student Conference was held last September 26, 2019 at Sagatech
Resort, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City, bearing the theme of IIEE 2019: Distinctive Journey in
Advancing Global Competitiveness. Two seminars were conducted namely IIEE Embracing
Industry 4.0 in Advancing Global Competitiveness and Power Substation Transformer
Installation and Commissioning. The annual event gathered all the Electrical Engineering
students under Region 8 to compete, for camaraderie, and to be aware of the new trends and
innovations that the world of an Electrical Engineer is facing today and in the future.

The first topic was about IIEE Embracing Industry 4.0 in Advancing Global
Competitiveness. Industry 4.0 or the fourth industrial revolution is a new global trend where
traditional industrial processes are being automated. From product manufacturing to product
delivery, industry 4.0 hastens the processes with less manpower since the once that are doing
the hard works are the automated machines. Examples of these modern innovations that play a
key role in industry 4.0 are unmanned or autonomous motor vehicles, 3D printers, and many
other results in advanced robotics. During the seminar, the speaker cited that all though
industry 4.0 brings us to a new phase in the human era; one of the major concerns of this phase
is that plenty of people will lose their jobs since robots will be taking over their daily tasks. He
also cited that our country is ready to embrace industry 4.0. There were plenty of wonderful
things that the industrial revolution brings but with plenty of advantages comes with plenty of
disadvantages. The second topic was about Power Substation Transformer Installation and
Commissioning. This topic was all about transformer installation to transformer maintenance in
a power substation. The speaker explained the several techniques on when or how often should
a power transformer be checked. He also added that all the step taken before and during a
substation operates is following the rules and regulations that were laid by the government.

In summary, the new topics that were discussed in the seminar gave me an insight that
there are still so many things that we can do to improve our daily lives. With the current
technology that the world can offer us, there is still a huge volume of work load in the field of
electrical engineering for the future.
