Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)
Describe characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative
research (CS_RS12-Ia-c-1)

Introduction
Have you ever encountered a problem that you would wish to solve? Or a
question that you would like to answer?

Exploring the world, solving problems, and answering questions has been the
primary goal of humanity. And through research all of these are possible.

This module will help you learn the step-by-step process of research writing
specifically, quantitative study. You will realize that writing a research paper is like
constructing a plastic figure by putting pieces of lego blocks. By following these easy
steps, you can construct a research paper and finally solve series of problems.

Objectives

Describe the different characteristics of quantitative research.

Let’s Recall (Review)

1. What comes in your mind when you encounter the word ‘RESEARCH’? Give five (5)
terminologies that are related to the word ‘RESEARCH’
a. .
b. .
c. .
d. .
e. .

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Characteristics are value or properties that describe a particular

object, activity or process. Let see the examples below.

Characteristics
Fuji Apple Color Weight Taste
Red 12 grams Sweet
Characteristic: The fuji apple is color red, weighs 12 grams and it
tastes sweet.

Characteristics
Manila Structure Population Land Area
Highly urbanized 13,923,452 42.88 square kilometer

Characteristic: Manila is highly urbanized city, with a population of

nearly 14 million and has a land area of 22 square kilometers.

Running

Characteristic: Running is a type of cardio exercise that helps burn

calories with moderate level of difficulty.

Characteristics
Difficulty Type of Exercise Benefit
Moderate Cardio It burns
calories

Let’s Try (Evaluation)

Do you have an idea now? Let’s try and describe the characteristics of the
next example below.

Characteristics

Objective Survey or Experiment Numerical

Characteristics: Quantitative research

2
Let’s Analyze

In quantitative research, questions are objective. Meaning it must be

answerable using pure fact.
Sample question: How many people lived in Manila? What is the weight of
fuji apple based on the weighing scale?
These questions can only be answered by pure facts. Guessing, opinion and
personal views are not acceptable.

In quantitative research, gathering of data or answering the objective

questions can be done through survey or scientific experiment.
Examples: Survey questionnaire and scientific method.
This process of data gathering can generate pure facts.

In quantitative research, data are in numerical. Because numbers are

factual information and appropriate to answer objective type of questions.
Numbers
12345… Example: 13,923,452 people live in Manila.
This type of data can easily analyze and unbias.

Let’s Create

Research Concept Paper

Goal

Find out the characteristics of the sample study. List down the important details about
the sample research. This includes the research problem, data gathering tools, and
expected research output.

Role
Your job is to act as research evaluator.

Audience

You are to present you work to your teacher, classmates and family members.

Situation

The challenge is to make a summary of the sample study using its characteristics.

3
Product Performance

Your work will be judged by your teacher and your classmates upon presentation.
You should also be able to answer their questions about it.

Standards

Standards and Criteria

Your performance will be graded by the following rubric.

Components UNACCEPTABLE MAJOR SATISFACTORY EXCELLENT SCORE
75-78 IMPROVEMENT 83-93 93-100
79-82
Discussion Little or no Discussion Major Brief and
and discussion of insufficient and components concise

Relationship between the Teachers’ Performance and

Students’ Academic Performance in SCIENCE
By Carpio, F. (2007)

The primary purpose of the study was to find out the relationship between
teachers’ performance and students’ academic performance in Science.
The respondents of the study were the grade 10 students and science
teachers from three public schools around Parañaque. A researcher-made
questionnaire was the main data-gathering instrument. The result of students’
National Achievement Test in Physics will determine the academic performance of
student respondents while teachers’ performance will be determined by their rating in
PAST or Performance Appraisal System for Teachers.

The findings revealed that apparently, there is a strong positive relationship

between teachers’ performance and student academic performance. The academic
achievement of the grade 10 students in Physics from public schools of Parañaque City
is directly affected by the performance of Science teacher in PAST. As such, there is a
need to propose an action plan that can further help the students and science teacher
improve their performance.
