ILLUSTRATING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSION

Good Morning! Have you ever thought of problems

such as how many people are needed to complete a
job? What are the bases of their wages? How long
they can finish the job?

In this module, you are going to explore and answer

these questions.

At the end of this lesson, you must be able to illustrate rational algebraic expressions.M8AL-Ic-
1

Please take note of the following

important words below:

Ratio is a comparison of two or more numbers that indicates how many times one
number contains another.
Polynomial is a mathematical expression of one or more algebraic terms each of
which consists of a constant multiplied by one or more variables raised to a
non-negative integral power.
Rational Algebraic Expression is a ratio of two polynomials.

Before we proceed, try

to answer this!

1. Which of the following expressions is a rational algebraic expression?

x 3 x 3 x y
a. b. c. 4 y 2  x 3 d.
3y ( y  1) x y

2. What is the equivalent mathematical phrase of “the ratio of a number x and

four added to a number y”?
y4 x y x4
a. b. c. d.
x y4 x4 y
3. Which of the following expressions DOES NOT belong to the group?
3x  y 1
1
 3x  y  3x  y 3x  y
a.   b. c. d.
 x y  x y x y x  y 1
4. What value of the denominator will make the rational algebraic expression
undefined?
a. 0 b. 1 c. 2 d. 3

5. Which of the following should describe the numerator and denominator of a

rational algebraic expression?
a. function b. equation c. relation d. polynomial

DO YOU A rational algebraic expression is

KNOW?
a ratio of two polynomials provided that the
denominator is not equal to zero. In
symbols:

Example 1: Example 2:
2z polynomial 3y2  z polynomial

Examples 1 and 2 are rational algebraic expressions since each shows a ratio of
two polynomials.

x2 polynomial
Example 3:
y 1  3 non-polynomial because the first term is raised to a negative exponent

non-polynomial because the exponent of the expression

(3x  1)3 x contains a variable
Example 4:
y 2 non-polynomial because in the first term a variable is inside the
radical sign

Example 3 is not a rational algebraic expression since the denominator is not a

polynomial the same with Example 4 since both the numerator and
denominator are non-polynomials.

I THINK YOU’RE NOW READY…LET’S TRY!!!

Practice Task 1:

Match column A with column B by translating the verbal phrases to

mathematical phrases.

A B

1. the quotient of 3x and 4y a.

2. the fraction whose denominator is 7 more
b. +7
than the numerator x.
c. 𝑥 − 7
3. the product of the numbers x and y divided
d. 10y + 2x
the by 3.
e.
4. the cube root of a number x decreased by 𝑦
3
Seven f. √𝑥 − 7
5. ten times a number y increased by twice
the number x.

Practice Task 2:

Tell whether each expression is a rational algebraic expression or not. Write

RAE if it is and NRAE if it is not.

______1. ______3.

______2. ______4.

Practice Task 3:

Complete the table below by determining if the expression is a rational

algebraic expression or not. Write a check (/) mark on column of your answer
and provide a reason if the expression is not a rational algebraic expression.
