Learning Episode 5 – Grading and Reporting

To have a meaningful and successful accomplishment in this FS episode, be sure to read

through the whole episode before participating and assisting in your FS 2 Resource Teacher’s
class. Note all the information you will need and tasks you will need to do before working o this
episode.

Introduction

It is said that students should not study only for scores nor grades. Students should study
most of all for learning. It is possible for students to obtain high scores and good grades but did
not really learn that much. What is ideal is for students to get high scores and good grades
because they really learned a lot. Our word of employment, scholarship grants, etc. still look at
grades as criteria for hiring and screening for scholarship. So grades have pragmatic value.
Therefore, it is best that students work for good grades that genuinely reflect level of mastery.

The DepEd Grading System

Review the policy guidelines on Classroom Assessment for the k to 12 Basic Education Program
in DO 8 s. 2015 and the Interim Guidelines for Assessment and Grading in Light of the Basic Education
Learning Continuity Plan in DepEd Order 31 s.2020. The grading system of the DepEd is contained in the
said DepEd Orders.

Reporting Students, Progress and Grades to Parents

Students’ progress and grades are reported to parents through Report Card, Parents’
Teachers conference and written conferences

Participate and Assist

(Note to Student Teacher: As you participate and assist your FS Resources Teacher in
scoring assessment tasks, computing grades and reporting grades to parents and
guardians, please take note of what you are expected to give more attention to as asked in
the next step of this Learning Episode(NOTICE).

1. Confer with your Resource Teacher about scoring students’ assessment tasks, grade
computation and reporting. This may also be done face-to-face or online.

- Upon conferring to my resource teacher regarding on how he give scores and grades to his
students this is what he responded. “With regards to scoring or giving of grades, I am depending
on the rubrics or standards in the WHLP. This is the actual explanation of the content of the
Assessment and Grading for SY 2020-2021 based on DepEd Order 31, s. 2020 that all schools
across the country (Philippines) should use and this is a must to follow. That is why I am always
referring to this whenever I assess and give scores and grades on my students to avoid
subjectivity”.

2. Ask your Resource Teacher what you can do to assist him/her in the scoring of students’
assessment tasks’ grade computation and preparation for reporting in the Parents’Teachers
Conference.

- Our Resource Teacher instruct us to make a rubric or a criteria about the group work or
activity of the students he is handling in order for us to be able to give them the grade or scores
objectively. Having a rubric or setting up a criterion for the students would help them gain high
grades or scores. Our resource teacher also sends us the assessment form or the grading system
they are using in order for us to have a guide or basis in computing some of our student’s grades.
Unfortunately, regarding the Parents Teachers Conference we don’t yet have the opportunity to
attend or extend help in the preparation.

Notice

Take notice of:

• The individual student’s scores in relation to established criterion of success or cut-off score;
• Parents’/guardians’ participation and comments during Card-Giving Day/ Parents’-Teachers
Conference.
• Your own feelings and thoughts as you assisted your CT: -score test and compute grades
-prepare for PTC

Analyze
Group Output

1. What are the teaching implications for the students’ test scores and grades?

- I think the teaching implications of the students test scores and grades is all about what the
students had been done during the class discussion or lecture and that would prove if the learning
strategies of the teacher was effective on the learning style of the students . For me, test scores
and grades was for the teacher to assess if the students had really learn something from him, but
we can’t avoid the fact that there are these students who are most likely to cheat because they are
aspiring to have a good test result. This should be avoided and must be prioritized because as a
teacher, you would never know if your students are learning Let us inculcate to students’ minds
that test scores and grades was made to measure their learning in order to make necessary
adjustment on the part of the teacher if needed.

2. In what subjects did students perform best? Poorest?

- Based from the statement given by our resource teacher, regarding the performance of the
students about the different subjects they have, he can not specify it yet. It is because he hasn’t
seen the grades of the students from their other subjects. But according to him, despite of this
pandemic and this new platform of learning, the students are still doing their very best to perform
well in all their subjects.

Reflect

Individual Output

What personal message do I get from these students’ scores or grades?

- As for me, I think the message that I realize after having seen and computed some of the
students’ scores and grades is that as a student, we are really the one who are making our grades
or scores and that the teachers as facilitators are just the ones who computed them and that I
realize that if we as students would really do and give our very best in every activities and task
being given to us then the outcome of our grades would reflect our being a responsible students.
Your grade does not really define you as a person but your grades or scores would definitely
shows how passionate and dedicated you are as a student.
