2) What motivated the Filipino revolutionists in uprising against the Spanish colonial rule
(provide historical context)?

One of the reasons for the uprising is that the abuse of the encomienda system. From the
account of Dr. Eric A. Anderson, although the Spanish rulers has a good purpose such as a
tool for civilizing the Filipino people, providing for their religious instruction, and teaching
them useful social and work habits through the imposition of a tribute-tax on establishing
the system, it was not avoided that authorities may take advantage of system to their own
gain such as the case of the Francisco Salgado, a tax collector. Some of the abuses mentioned
were the illegal collection of tribute to persons who transferred encomienda, overpriced
payment of taxes, and no allowance or reimbursement of costs spent on transporting goods.
Spanish rulers tried to mitigate the worst features of encomienda but it was not totally
wiped out. Furthermore, there was an opposition before 1872 was primarily confined to the
Filipino clergy, who resented the Spanish monopoly of power within the Roman Catholic
Church in the islands. In that year the failed Cavite Mutiny, a brief uprising against the
Spanish, served as an excuse for renewed Spanish repression. In connection with this the
three Filipino priests were executed because of the alleged plotting of the mutiny. The death
of Gomburza has gained resentment and strong feeling of anger among the Filipinos in which
they questioned Spanish authorities and demanded reforms. Also, through the national
awakening of the minds of the Filipinos. The education contributed to the emergence of such
ideas which were adopted by the educated Filipinos, or the so called illustrados, who would
emerge to play a central role in the revolution. The said idea of a Filipino people and the
belief in human equality and human rights gave people more courage to assert their
demands.

3) What is the implication of the death of GOMBURZA?

According to a Filipino scholar and researcher Dr. Trinidad Hermenigildo Pardo de Tavera, the
Cavite mutiny was exaggerated by Gen. Izquierdo, along with the friars, to alarm the Spanish
Government in order to delay installing reforms for the native Filipinos. Such reforms
included the establishment of a school of arts and trades, which aimed to improve the
education of Filipinos but would mean that the friars would lose their power in the
government. Unfortunately, the Spanish Government in Spain relied on the report of Gen.
Izquierdo and made no more attempts to investigate the issue in which the three Filipino
priests which was Gomez, Burgos, Zamora received the punishment without further

investigation. One of the implications of the death of GOMBURZA was the influential
literature writing in Philippine history which was the El Filibusterismo. Jose Rizal dedicated
this writing in memory of the death of the three Filipino priest. The message it conveys
includes the system of government in the Philippines through corrupt officials, dominated by
the Spanish friars that lead to the downfall of Spain.

4) Is it really necessary for the Filipino revolutionists to pick up guns in fighting for what they
believe in? Make your own stand by citing specific passages in the reading material.

In their situation, yes. From the document of Guillermo Masangkay, it was stated that the
Spaniards found out about the Katipuneros planning a revolution against the government, which was
the group of Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto and others. In this account, “You remember the fate of
our countrymen who were shot in Bagumbayan. Should we return now to our towns, the Spaniards
will only shoot us” were the words of Andres Bonifacio. It looks like the revolutionists were out of
options but to fight using weapons. Also, based from this, we can tell that the Spaniards are not
accepting negotiation but only execution to those overthrowing the government, which is an act of
treason. Moreover, in the story of Georgia de Jesus, the wife of Supremo Andres Bonifacio, and the
Lakambini of Katipunan, her life was put into danger because of the outbreak of the revolution in
which she played an important part safeguarding the secret documents and weapons. In her
narration, she said that “Later, I found out that the occupants of the house which I had visited were
seized and severely punished, and some even exiled.” This statement showed how brutal and
merciless the Spaniards were that would constantly create fear in their lives if they found an uprising
Filipinos against them. At that time, the Spaniards see themselves in a superior position that is why
they would not entertain opening a communication about their ill-treatment to the Filipinos. Instead,
those who opposed their way of governing would suspiciously be concluded as a revolt against the
Spaniards which would be punished or exiled. In the end, the use of guns of the Filipino
revolutionists as a way of fighting was their last and effective resort to win against the Spaniards and
attain the independence that they have been wanting long enough.

5) Were the Filipino revolutionists successful in fighting for the Filipino freedom?
