CRITICAL PATH ACTIVITIES:

From the above table we observe that the activities 5-7, 7-8 and 8-9 are critical activities as their total
float is zero. Hence we have the following critical path.

5-7, 7-8 and 8-9 8+8+7=25

MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY USING PROGRAM EVALUATION AND REVIEW METHOD
(PERT)

A project has the following characteristics

activity 1-2 2-3 2-4 3-5 4-5 4-6 5-7 6-7 7-8 7-9 8-10 9-10
Most optimistic time(a) to 1 1 1 3 2 3 4 6 2 5 1 3

Most likely time(m) te 1.5 2 3 4 3 5 5 7 4 6 2 5

Construct a PERT network. Find critical path and variance for each event find the project
duration as 95% probability.

SOLUTION: Activity expected times & their variances are computed by the following formula

t o +t p +4 t m (b−a) 2
Expected time (t e) = ( ). V=

MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY USING GANTT CHART
Listed in the table are the activities and sequencing necessary for a maintenance job on the assembly
(servicing) maintenance.

Tasks start date: 12 June 2021

Activity Description Predecessor Time (days)

A Servicing plan - 2

B Removing and fitting the cutter set A 3

C Grease lubricator nipples B 4

D Inspect the lug rings C 1

E Inspect Shaft seals C 2

F Swinging the cutter housing aside E 2

G Fitting the stepper motor with worm gear pair and D, F 4

the toothed gear ring

H Removing and fitting the threaded locating pins C 3

Task A has no predecessors, and can thus start on 12 June. The Gantt chart shows the task as a box starting on
12 June and finishing on 13 June on the horizontal access. Task B requires Task A to be completed, and the
duration is three days, so the box covers the dates 14 to 16 June. The line from the finish of Task A to the start
of Task B indicates the dependency.
Note that Tasks D, E and H require Task C to be completed, and have no other dependencies, so these all start
on the same date. The chart below show all seven days of the week, but often, weekend days are excluded.
