INTRODUCTION AND EXERCISES

INTRODUCTION:

with Úre complexity of today's modern iazz patlerns and rhytbmic

figures, the progressive drummer would do well to remember tlat
tùe Snare Drum is tle focal point of his drum outfit, and that most of
tàe patterns presented herein eminate from the Snare Dnrm.

The purpose of this book is to enable the drummer to develop a

better knowledge in playing arorrnd the drums, using Snare Drum,
Smal Tom Tom and la,rge Tom Tom. Attention should be called to
t5e sticking of the various patterns. You will note that most of the
patterns smplof the use of single strokes, starting rritb the teft
ha-nd. At the end oJ each pattern, the sÈcti''g *i11 ch^nge, (i. e. for
triplet patterns ffi and for sixteenth pfterns fi=l? I ltis
will allow tle dnrmmer to come bck to the riderffmhf vithotú
unnecessarT or confirsing sticlring-

Some of the lntterns vritten in this bo* Ey seem guite hard and
involved at first, ht if practiced difigpdly, tbey will become quite
easy to play. lbese pafierus are to be worked up to a speed tìat is
within tlre drummer's ability to play rrifh accuracy. Reniember: -
Speed witlout aceuracy, maiúerance d smd and form are worth-
less to a progressive and conscieúios drrrmmer'

The code and nrles shown at tlre top of tle following page will be used
tlroughout this book. The drumner will notice tbat the code is similar
to his drum set-uP. ,F

ARÙT EXERCISES

Many of t}1e pattergrs urritten in t}is book will have the drummer's arns moving just as
fast as tre wóuta mbve his wrist. In order that he'play these pafbrns with little effort,
the dnrmmer should practice the following arm exercises.

Each exercise should first be memorized and played without using tìe Bass Drum and
Hi-Hat. After the particular exercise has been memorized, add tbe Ei-IIat and tfien
finally the Bass Drum. The Bass Drum atthotrgh written itt Í i" qtional as to the ap-
plication in each exercise, but the IIi-Hat should always be on the t-nd ald 4th beat of
the measure. Practice each exercise very slowly at firgt and increase the speed as
the exercise becomes more familiar and easier to execute.
