Task 1- Error Detection and Paraphrasing (1 hour-Suggested)

They say that it is easy to point out others’ mistakes, we want you to do just that and then some.
The article below is being written for a 7th grader. Show us your skills by:

1. detecting and correcting grammar, logical, spelling, and punctuation errors,

2. rewriting the article following the constraints given below.

Your only constraints are:

a) The entire article should be no longer than 150 words.

b) No vital information should be left out.

c) The paragraph should have logical connected sentences.

d) Give an appropriate title to the summary.

Read the article given below.

Asthma is one of the chronic ailments plaguing our society. However, Reliever Puffers has
always been the saviours. Most of the asthma patients keep reliever puffers handy, to combat
the deadly attack of asthma. If the reliever puffers are already helping you, do you really need to
take another set of strenuous measures to control your asthma!
After all, two or three puffs of a reliever puffer (inhaler) a few times per day is easy, gives quick
relief, and doesn’t take any commitment. BUT this means that your asthma is controlling you. If
your asthma controls you, this is what happens:
Your blood oxygen is lower than normal, this produces fatigue, and you don’t perform as well in
school, work, sport or play.
Your sleep pattern is upset and this worsens your fatigue
You are much more susceptible to severe attacks which might require resurrection in hospital
Only You can make the decision to control your asthma, rather than letting it control you.

How do you do this?

ONE – Review the Triggers for your asthma.

An asthma attack can occur when someone with asthma is exposed to things in the
environment that “trigger” their asthma. One person’s triggers can be very different from those of
another person with asthma. Check out the asthma triggers with yourself, with your doctor, or
your asthma educator. The management of your asthma is not complete until you have
understood and treated all the triggers for your asthma. In particular, every person who has had
asthma treatment in the last 12 months should have a skin test or blood test to check for
contagious allergies, such as dust mite, pollens, pets, or moulds. Speak to your doctor or your
asthma educator.
TWO – Add a Preventer Puffer (see below) if:
1. you use a reliever puffer more than three times per week (excluding exercise), adding a
preventive puffer can help mitigate the symptoms.
2. Do you feel as though you could use a reliever puffer more than three times per week
(excluding exercise)?
3. If you ever wake up at night needing a reliever puffer, a prevent puffer will come in handy.

THREE – Get yourself an Action Plan so that you know how to prevent an attack, or if an attack
does occur, you can control the attack.
You can’t have an effective action plan until you understand steps one and two! For example, if
you know that you get asthma every time you get a cold or the flu, then get in early. As soon as
you develop symptoms of a cold or the flu (sore throat, fever, glands in neck, blocked snuffly
nose with dirty or green discharge, feeling lousy, aches and pains), Don’t wait for it – start your
preventer puffer and see your doctor to seek immediate medical attention.
Another example. If you know that you get asthma every time you put on at someones’ place
because of mold at their house, take an Antihistamine tablet two hours Before you go ,and
review your asthma action plan with your doctor or your asthma educator.
Task 2- Read and Visualise (30 mins - Suggested)

“Pictures speak a thousand words”

A few scenarios and ideas are listed below. We’d like you to visualise any 1 of them and
communicate the same message through visuals only! You could use a comic strip, an
infographic, flowchart, or a series of images to communicate the message. Be concise and
crisp!!

You can attempt any 1 from the below.

1. The light from a star passes through different layers of our atmosphere; it keeps
bouncing and bending before it reaches us. This happens multiple times between hot
and cold layers of moving air. So, when we look at the star from the earth, some of the
light rays reach us directly and some bends away from and toward us. This event
happens so fast that it produces a twinkling effect.

2. Biology is where division leads to multiplication.

3. Rockets work a lot like a balloon filled with air. When the balloon is untied, the
compressed air inside the balloon tries to escape into the open. And, air in turn pushes
the balloon with an equal force in the opposite direction according to Newton’s third law
of motion.

4. If we take a drop of blood and separate out its components, we get blood cells and the
liquid part of blood which is called ‘Plasma’. The yellowish plasma contains antibodies
that are essential in fighting against disease-causing germs. Hence, when this plasma is
donated to an ailing patient, the antibodies help fight the infection and boost their
chances of recovery.

5. While human beings can safely drink up to 1 litre of water at once, camels can drink up
to about one hundred litres of water at a go! That’s like drinking four hundred glasses of
water at once!

6. Every rhombus is a parallelogram but the vice versa is not true.

7. Multiplication is nothing but repeated addition whereas division is repeated subtraction.

2
8. Area of a circle is π𝑟 .
Task 3- Hey Storyteller! (1.5 hrs - Suggested)

Time to unleash the storyteller within you!

Part 1
Choose any 1 story of an invention or discovery from the list given below and narrate the story
using visuals and necessary text cues only.
1. Discovery of X-Rays
2. Edison’s bulb
3. Invention of the computer
4. Discovery of neutrons
5. Discovery of the DNA
6. Discovery of the cell
7. Story of Ramanujan
8. Discovery of the Pythagorean theorem

Software/Applications that you can use are PowerPoint, Storyboard that, Google Drawing and
Google docs. Hand-drawn stick figures that narrate the story are welcome too.
Here’s one for your reference.

Part 2
Try to rewrite the story you have visualised in part 1 with a different plot. Go creative with your
imagination and change the story to give it your own twists. Remember, the discovery or
invention does not change so the conclusion of your story should remain the same as part 1!
Here are a few references: Ref 1, Ref 2.
Word limit: 1000 words

[PS: Top your story off with a huge dollop of creativity, a pinch of humour and a spoon full of
your authentic style to show us your brilliant writing skills. Feel free to use any application or
software and don’t forget to mention the reference along with your task]
Task 4: Making solutions simple (30 mins - Suggested)

Please choose 1 subject of your choice and write a clear solution explaining the process of
getting to the answer in a step-by-step manner.

BC, find ∠1.

b) 45o
c) 60o
d) 70o

Physics
A bullet of mass 50 g is fired from a stationary rifle into a wooden block of mass 1.95 kg placed
on a horizontal wooden surface. On striking, the bullet is embedded into the block and both
together cover a distance of 200 m in a straight path before coming to rest. Given the coefficient
of friction between the block and the surface is 0.2 and the mass of the rifle from which the
bullet is triggered is 14 kg, find the magnitude of the velocity of the recoil of the rifle. (Ignore the
impact of air resistance on the bullet while solving the question).
