APRIL 2021
NISSAN / IYAR 15781 BULLETIN
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN

Reentry from Exile

The doors to our sanctuary have now been closed to the public for over a

year. Most of us long to return to our spiritual home at the Jewish Center

of the Hamptons, to be together once more in the comfort of a familiar

pew, in the place that we have developed Jewish memories over the years.

The time for reentry from exile is soon approaching as we are currently

planning the reopening of the Jewish Center sanctuary on a limited basis.,

but this is nonetheless a moment for us to mark with excitement and

jubilation. I’m reminded of the Psalm that the Jews sang when they were returning to their beloved

Jerusalem after seventy years of living in captivity in Babylonia:

‫׃םי ֽ ִמ ְל ֹח ּ ְכ ּוני֗ ִָהי֝ ן ֹ֑ו ּי ִצ ת ֣ ַבי ִׁש־ת ֶא ה ָוה ֭ ְי ב ּ֣ו ׁש ּ ְב ת ֹ֥ולֲע ֫ ּ ַמ ֽ ַה רי֗ ִׁש‬

A Song of Ascension: We feel like dreamers when we imagine God restoring the treasures of Zion

Our mouths are filled with laughter, and our tongues with joy — Psalm 126

Welcoming our community back into the Jewish Center’s sanctuary will surely evoke the same

kind of elation. We will, of course, still continue to offer a virtual platform for those who wish

to be a part of the worship community via Zoom, Facebook Live, and Vimeo. Something similar

happened at the time of the return of Exiles from Babylonia; many ended up not physically

returning. These steps are not a return to normal; rather, a a gradual return to a new normal

for our community. Yes, there will be the old comforts of our sanctuary and the experience of

physical community, yet there will also be many safety protocols that effect the way we pray, our

ability to interact, and the look of our sanctuary.

The time is nearing. Over the next month, keep on the look out for details about our reopening.

Rabbi J oshua Franklin

YOM HASHOAH SERVICE

Yom HaShoah Service

Holocaust Remembrance Day
Wednesday, April 7 at 5:30pm
We will remember the millions of Jewish men,
women, and children, as well as countless others,
whose lives were taken during the Shoah, one
of the darkest times of human history. Yom
HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day,
teaches us to remember and honor not only the
millions of lives lost, but the bravery and strength
of those who survived such senseless acts of
brutality.
To commemorate this time in history, Jewish
Center of the Hamptons will mark the day with a
brief memorial service, followed by a screening
of the award-winning film, Denial. The film
chronicles the Irving v Penguin Books Ltd trial, in
which Deborah Lipstadt, a Holocaust scholar, was
sued by Holocaust denier David Irving for libel.

We hope you will join us for this service followed by a special

screening of the film Denial (see Page 5 for details) →

We invite you to pick up a yellow Yahrzeit candle to light in memory of

those whose lives were tragically cut short. The yellow wax reminds us
of the yellow arm bands that Jews were forced to wear.
May their memories forever be for a blessing.

DENIAL FILM SCREENING

Join us for a screening of the film

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7 | 5:30pm

immediately following our Yom HaShoah service

Based on the acclaimed book Denial: Holocaust History on Trial, DENIAL recounts Deborah E.
Lipstadt’s (Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against
David Irving (BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him
a Holocaust denier. In the English legal system, in cases of libel, the burden of proof is on the
defendant, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team, led by Richard Rampton (Academy
Award® nominee Tom Wilkinson), to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred.

DENIAL is directed by Emmy Award® winner Mick Jackson (“Temple Grandin”) and adapted for
the screen by BAFTA and Academy Award® nominated writer David Hare (The Reader). Producers
are Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff.

This event will be held on Zoom. Register at jcoh.org/denial

MUSSAR:
A PRACTICE OF SHAPING OUR HOLY VIRTUES
WITH RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN
MONDAYS | MARCH 15–MAY 3 | 5:00pm
The word “Mussar” translates into “correction” “instruction,” or “ethics;” but Mussar as a practice
describes a movement of self betterment through the development of holy Jewish virtues. Come
explore one value (middah) at a time with Rabbi Josh Franklin, as we unpack ideas such as humility
(anavah), wisdom (chochmah), generosity (n’divut), compassion (rachamim), and trust (bitachon).
Mussar is not Jewish self-help. Its purpose rather is to elevate holiness in each individual.

This event will be held on Zoom. Please visit jcoh.org/virtual to join.
