CHESHVAN / KISLEV

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN / MAZEL TOV

Turkey For God is Good!

Psalm 118 begins with the well known Hebrew words “‫ הֹודּו לַיהו ָה ּכִי־טֹוב‬hodu
l’Adonai ki tov,” which literally translates “it’s good to thank God.” Modern
Hebrew speakers will also point out another homophonic meaning of
the word ‫הֹודּו‬, which in addition to “give thanks,” is an abbreviation for
“turkey.” Hence the tile of this piece “Turkey for God is Good.” The
upcoming Thanksgiving holidays should pleasantly remind us to invite
God to our dinner table. Before you start your Thanksgiving meal,
consider implementing a tradition of offering blessings of gratitude. Here
are three creative ways you might consider doing so:

1. Express your thanks through service. Volunteer at a shelter that feeds hungry people, make
cards for our troops, bake pies with your kids and take some to your local police or fire station.

2. Gratitude Tablecloth. Ask everyone to write 3 things they’re grateful for, their name & the date
on a plain white tablecloth using permanent markers. Repeat annually with the same cloth &
your family will look forward to the tablecloth every year.

3. Read psalms of gratitude from the Book of Psalms, particularly, Psalms 136, and 145-150. These
poetic biblical verses offer language to express both prayer and gratitude for the wonders of
life that God has offered us.

Why is a turkey called ‫תרנגול הודו‬, Indian Chicken?

If turkey originated in North America, why is it associated with Turkey and India? This isn’t just a
mystery of the Hebrew language, but an English language enigma too! The English name “turkey”
comes from a misidentification of the bird with the African guinea-fowl, which entered Europe
through Turkey. We can thank Christopher Columbus for the bird’s association with India, for
when he reached the Western Hemisphere, he thought he and his crew were in India, hence the
name Indians for the native Americans. Turkey the bird is also connected to India in Russian
Indiuk, Polish indyk, French dinde and Yiddish indik.

interesting book, expand your thinking on a new topic or just meet new
friends in the neighborhood. Whether you’re an avid reader or just want
to follow along with the group, our book club welcomes you!

About The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer is trying to find a cure for her mother’s loneliness. Believing
she might discover it in an old book her mother is lovingly translating, she sets out in search of
its author. Across New York an old man called Leo Gursky is trying to survive a little bit longer.
He spends his days dreaming of the lost love who, sixty years ago in Poland, inspired him to
write a book. And although he doesn’t know it yet, that book also survived: crossing oceans and
generations, and changing lives...

This event will be held on Zoom. Please visit jcoh.org/virtual

THANKSGIVING
SHABBAT ON THE BEACH
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26 AT 6:00pm
Come join us as we usher in Shabbat in our synagogue’s unique way. Many congregations around
the country have duplicated our summer Shabbat on the Beach experience, but we know no other
congregation that goes out to the beach in the middle of the winter, uses bonfire as Shabbat and
Chanukah candles, and the warmth of each other to create a brief but moving service of mystical
proportions. If you are saying Kaddish for a loved one, you will be given the opportunity to call out
their name in loving memory.

We look forward to seeing you as we sing and celebrate Shabbat and Chanukah together!
Watch future emails for additional information on our Pop-Up Chanukah events,
when we can all be together to celebrate, while being socially distanced and safe.

community who suffer from food insecurity.
Hunger is real, even in the Hamptons.
When you go food shopping, we ask that you
consider picking up one or two non-perishable
items for donation.
Donations may be left on our front porch.
