Chapter1 GeneralIntroductiontoPLC

The document provides an overview of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). It discusses the history of PLCs from their invention in 1968 to their widespread use today. It also describes the structure of PLCs, common manufacturers, programming languages used, and applications where PLCs are used, such as controlling motors, traffic lights, mixing solutions, and counting items on production lines. The document concludes by discussing PLC networks and their role in industrial automation.

Chapter 1. INTRODUCTION TO PLC
PLC

• PLC: Programmable logic controller

• PLC has popularly used industrial automation
• PLC manufacturers: Siemens, Omron,
Schneider, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, LG, Allen
Bradley, ABB, B&R, …

History of PLC

• 1968: Richard Morley invented the first idea about

PLC for General Motor.
• 1969: The first time PLC (Allen Bradley) was used in
automation industry (128 I/O, Memory 1KB).
• 1971: The first time PLC was used in some other
industrial fields.
• 1973: PLCs with some intelligent functions, data
processing, printer controlling, …
• 1975: PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) was
integrated in PLC.
History

• 1977: mp-based PLC

• 1980: Intelligent I/O Modules
• 1981: PLC with 16 bits mp, PLC network
• 1982: large I/O Module (8192 I/O)
• 1992: IEC (International Electric technical
Commission ) 61131 standard
• 2000s: Types of PLC.
Some types of PLC

Controlling solution mixer
• A tank is filled with two chemicals,
which are mixed together and drained.
• When Start button at input I0.0 is
pressed, the program starts Pump 1,
controlled by Q0.0.
• After 5 seconds, the proper amount of
Chemical 1 has been pumped, and the
pump shuts off.
• Pump 2 then runs for 3 seconds
adding Chemical 2 to the tank. The
program then starts the mixer motor,
using Q0.2, and mixes the chemicals for
60 seconds.
• Then the drain valve is opened, and
Pump 3, controlled by output Q0.4, is
turned on for 8 seconds, emptying the
tank.
• A manual Stop switch is provided at
input I0.1
