ASSIGNMENTS 1 AND 2
1. Explain the importance of stating objectives for every topic. (4 Marks)

(a) To be able to determine with some precision whether or not the teaching has
brought about the terminal activity desired by the teacher. They guide the teacher
in organizing his or her instructional procedures including the selection of content,
identification of resources and planning for learner activities appropriate for the
desired topic.

(b) To give direction and establish criteria for measuring success. They facilitate
relevant assessment and serve as the basis for sound curriculum development.

(c) To plan orderly learning activities in which the order consists of the progressive
learning processes. At the learner level, the instructional objectives enable the
learner to evaluate his/her own progress and therefore to plan on what to do in
order to perform better in a given subject.

(d) To have foresight in advance for possible determination of the number of lessons
necessary to complete the topic. They influence the steps taken by the teacher to
reach the end results desired for every topic.

2. You happen to be in a hurry and end up going to class without a lesson plan.
Highlight the challenges you are likely to encounter. (4 Marks)

I will not be able to know what I am going to teach, for whom and why because I will
not have taken a closer look at the content, the objectives, the learning experiences
and the resources that I will need to teach.

I will not be able to introduce new materials for the day’s lesson that may enable me
to adequately get the learners’ full participation.

During actual teaching, I may not be able to arrange the main body in sequential steps
so as to facilitate an easy and organized coverage of the content that will mentally and
3

physically engage learners in some form of activities for better understanding of the
lesson.

I may not be able to guide the learners in doing the summary or offer an appropriate
assignment because I may forget to revise the day’s lesson with the learners.

3. What’s the difference between a syllabus and a scheme of work? (6 Marks)

Syllabus is a document which shows the content to be covered in a given subject in a

given time at a particular level and it helps the teacher to have a broad view of the
subject and to select appropriate content to teach while a scheme of work is a written
description of the work that has been planned for a particular content to be covered
over a specified period of time and contains topics and sub-topics from the syllabus
which are broken down to be taught over a specified duration of time.

4. Describe the school as a system. (6 Marks)

The school can be thought of as a system because of the following reasons:
(a) The school has goals from the society that should be achieved. Every school
has well stated goals and missions.

(b) The school has elements which work together to achieve the stated goals and
missions. These elements include teachers, students, support staff, resources
and physical facilities.

(c) Harmony is evidenced by working together with all in the school. A system
fails when one component of the system stops working. This also happens for a
school, all the stakeholders must play their part for the objectives to be
fulfilled.

(d) Feedback is obtained through evaluation of all school activities. This may be
positive or negative. Most schools aim at positive activities or results.
