SURGE TANK EXPERIMENT

Objective

To confirm the method of calculation for determining the variation of level with time in a surge tank.

Apparatus

1. Reservoir tank
2. Surge tank
3. Stopwatch
4. Flow measurement meter

Procedure

1. The surge tank was set to an initial head of 120cm by changing the flow rate from the reservoir
tank.
2. The valve was suddenly closed and the time taken for the water level in the surge tank to rise
from the initial head to the top and back down was noted at several interval heights.
3. The discharge at the initial head was determined from the volume and time readings of the flow
measurement meter.
4. The above steps were repeated for initial heads of 110cm, 105cm, 100cm and 95cm.
